Good moves by Arlo. He has recognised that he is only as good as his contract's length and could be discarded at any time after next year.

Drapes has potential. Cracking the midfield will be a tough ask but he may find a spot somewhere. Macrae, Draper, McInnes and Harrison will be banging on the selection door and keeping many best 22/3 players honest. The priority of the younger players is to solidify consistent VFL games and then perform at AFL level when they have the chance.

So word on the street is Arlo hasn't had a break this pre-season. Has been training every day since the season ended. Has bulked up. Is fitter and stronger.

And pre-season hasn't even began. Looking forward to seeing him in a few weeks.

Jen just to be clear that wasn’t a dig at you. I think the industry struggles a bit at communicating what it takes to be an AFL footballer.

I’m not saying that wasn’t his right. I’m saying that he’s in a privileged position as a professional sportsperson so establishing the professional sportsperson lifestyle is crucial and any young player needs to do it if they’re serious about an AFL career.

The perfect example for me is Jayden Stephenson. At this time in 2018 he had the football world at his feet, but he never put the work in to establish that work ethic and will be out of the system following his current contract…

How could I forget about Poulter??!!
I thought it was a little harsh at the time, but if this is where the club is heading, I think it’s a good thing. Not holding on to players for longer than we should if we feel they aren’t right for us (but may well be for another club), and making a statement on club expectations can only be positive for the list build.

Agree. Good luck to him. But if you're coming into your second year after a quiet first year and watching Poulter and McMahon get delisted and not working your arse off, then you're going to need some luck.

That reminded me of the interview he did at the start of the year after joining the club. Something along the lines of:

"Some of the boys are calling me curtains. Not really sure why, I think it must be my hair ..."

Surprising that the penny has dropped regarding working hard.

I really hope this kid makes it, for no other reason than it will be awesome when this video re emerges via some footy show or social media, and then becomes a part of the folk lore, like tj getting called chompers or the cloke "smoke and shadows" video.
