Don't like being able to kick while being tackled. L2+Kick was fine for that situation. I feel like some of these changes are being made because people genuinely don't know how to play yet, myself included.

Speaking of, does anyone know the proper timing for spoils? Do you hold the stick or tap it? I know it says something about body positioning but once the players get side by side they are just stuck there.

Well they can only review what they are playing so what’s unfair about it?

I haven’t played since Saturday and I’ve played the game enough already patched or not patched that for me it would never be anything more than a 3-4 out of 10. It’s a half baked game with average game play, lack of features and depth that had a disastrous launch, it seems like more time and resources were put into player likeness, umpire likeness, coin tosses and stadium builders than the game play itself. Thats not a big ant attack I love the cricket games which I would easily put in the 7-9 range for their previous cricket releases.

There are going to be a lot of people in the same boat with work and kids that don’t get a lot of time to play these days so to expect people are going to be happy to chuck on a game that’s no where near finished and be frustrated for the half hour or hour time they have to play. By the time the games up to scratch half the AFL season is done, the ashes are on, other games start releasing and I know sure as well when Cricket 24 is out and then Madden in August, NBA in September if I’ve got a half hour window to play I’m not putting AFL in for a game over those other ones that’s for sure.

BigAntStudios think it would be cool if we can play as an individual afl player, so instead of a career mode we can play as a star player (kinda like 2K where if you go into my league you can lock as a player and play as that player)

I think a 4 is completely fair, borderline flattering tbh
Let’s not forget this was essentially the worst AFL game ever released at launch. It’s better now, but that wasn’t going to be hard. Also the fact that it’s basically AFL Live with a broken management mode and even the gameplay still isn’t as good
AFL Live got a 6/10
12 years on and being promised a 2K/EA experience, I think it’s being judged accordingly. Can’t really complain about that if you wanna compare yourself to the big boys themselves

I reckon a few likenesses may have been updated in the weekend patches.
For the Saints, I THINK I’m seeing Hunter Clark and Dan Butler looking different than before.

Ok, review is live. I've been going back and forth for the past few days after each patch just to make sure my criticisms were valid. I do think this game will be much better in a couple months after some significant patchwork and it's improved since launch, but as of right now $89+ is a tall ask.

Good review, as you know I've been hanging out for this one, appreciate it, it can't have been easy.

What is the aim of the review?
Is it to give an accurate perspective of the experience a consumer would get if they purchased when the review is published, or just perpetuate a lazy personal agenda?

AFL 23 is far from a perfect game, but to review it with a lower score than AFL Live 2 iOS is just preposterous. And that thing was still on the Apple store being presented as a "current game" this year, so it is a very valid point of reference.
This just appears to be a backyard publication looking for a cheap win at someone else's expense.
And I tried to play Cyberpunk at launch - any comparison of AFL 23 (as it is right now) to that is completely unreasonable.

Didn't see this commentary when that other publication gave it a 4.5/5 (same as Zelda). I know which one seems more amateurish to me...

It's averaging 5/10 which seems about right to me. Glimpses of potential and it looks good (no one is denying that), but it's still missing a lot of features, and crazy bugs and crashes are being reported daily which makes it unplayable for quite a few people.

Strange that a review that dares to score it a 4/10 is clickbait and amateurish when it's averaging 5/10. Not everyone is happy to beta test a retail product.

The controls are complex enough, I think getting a kick off sometimes is realistic, 2k have automatic animation and things like this and it works well.

I'm hoping that tactics fix player positioning as my defence gose missing at times. Had a game where the Eagles had a 4 vs 1 in there 50.
Also the AI are marking everything inside there own forward 50.

If you release a game you surely have to expect that someone will review it around the same time, I mean most times I look at any reviews for NBA etc they seem to be out a week prior to the game releasing. I am not sure you can say its unfair to review the game now I mean what do you want them to do wait until the end of June to review it?

If you look at the games that are coming out over the next few months Cricket 24, F1 23, Moto GP, Street Fighter, Diablo, Final Fantasy, 2K Drive, Crash Rumble and then you lead into the same cycle of Madden, NBA and FIFA over that 3 month period you can't expect people will still be as keen for this game then , AFL23 had all the momentum and anticipation for April release which was delayed and now that May release is stretching into maybe June for Xbox , maybe patched up completely by end of June but the most anticipated mode and promoted mode won't be available until around that period to? It failed miserably to hit the mark, the streamers/content creators have missed the boat to , a lot of hype around the game and they can't really stream anything worthwhile due to crashes and lack of depth in current modes available.

Peoples patience being tested, I mean most people that forked out $100 or more for cyberpunk took it back for a refund straight away and now pick it up cheap when it sounds like its in a playable state. Each to their own but when I got WWE2K20 and the thing constantly bugged graphically and gameplay wise it was a frustrating experience that wasn't enjoyable and from what I have played of AFL it is the same.

I'm aiming to win the premiership as Hawthorn then after that, not so sure. Evolution 1 I did multiple career's (both as manager and single player) - one being where I went on a 5-peat winning streak. Evolution 2, I didn't play through a single career as often, what I did instead was have multiple different saves where once sliders were made available I changed rules to suit my mood that would last the entire season (much like real life afl haha). One where the umpiring calls were super strict and another where umpire calls were near non existent.

The general game play is fun when it works, but when you spot the wonky animations or outright glitches... they do get frustrating when hit by them.

Ok so I got up 30 mins earlier today to give the game a run with the new patch (I’m on PS5) and I can honestly say its in a better place than on the weekend BUT a few things need immediate fixing, number one being handballing. I’m still getting these weird 60-metre backwards handballs and most occur winning the ball in the midfield. Also the AI logic needs to be tweaked, too many times building a play along the wing and the player who should be the next target runs for the hill back into the midfield 🤦🏻‍♂️.

As for the new auto interchange, a few things I noticed were:

  • the forward pockets get swapped with the half backs
  • 2nd ruck up doesnt seem to work (I always had Howe reliving Cameron, though I selected Krueger as 2nd ruck)
  • the sub seems to be a 5th interchange

All in all its definitely getting better, to me just need to tweak the handballing and player switching asap.

Played with the new PS5 patch this morning. Game carked it half way through the 2nd quarter in my season mode with Gold Coast as I ran in on goal, reported the crash though. Jumped into my management mode with Hawthorn (left it on round 2 waiting for manual interchanges to work for away team) and they worked! Game is getting much more fluid and I've had some really good runs of play.

  • Still a bit funky with the handball receives and players being janky with turning
  • I was flogging the Swans on medium (seems to have gotten easier).
  • Swans took a mark on the siren but passed 20 metres backwards

I'm happy with the current version/product, clearly still lots more to be done but in my experience, it is now an enjoyable game. As someone who sunk about 700-800 hours into Evolution 2, I'm already enjoying this much more

How do you set up 2nd ruck ect ?

Kinda getting tired of the "Well fifa and cyberpunk launched with bugs..." like yeah we know? This shouldn't be the industry standard however. Why do we just have to accept games going out as half done as normal now? I understand big ant is a smaller company, but they still need to be held to the same standards. You need to release a finished, stable product. I appreciate the amount of patches coming out I really do, however, I don't appreciate the hostility that grows when someone criticizes the game. They can do that! BUT then again, if someone praises certain aspects of the game that do work, why yell at them for it too? There is a lot of unwarranted petty s**t going on here.
Agree the fifa patch reference is pretty tone deaf. There's the tiny difference being the game worked before and then after the patch (which I think only didn't broke it for everyone with 100+ friends).

New patches are bad. Try again.
  • Contested marks are a deadset joke. Gone from being able to mark everything to getting smashed 20-1, despite timing everything to perfection.
  • Handballs are better but still suck.
  • Player movement is still frustrating.
  • Players lining up in no mans land for stoppages along the boundary.
  • Impossible to kick a behind.
  • Ball spills out a lot less, which means more dull stoppages.
  • Broken tackles look dumb but are less frequent.
  • Teleporting still there (how hard can this be to fix ffs).

Yes we have speccies and smothers but how about the core gameplay issues get addressed?

BigAnt need to figure out how to make the game more difficult without pissing off the player. Putting this away for a bit.

I still have that bug where the commentators stop, and then at the end of the quarter the game pans to a shot of the forward flank where you have to force quit!!!!

Also, the marking is impossible now, you lose 100% of the 1v1’s, even if you press triangle when the controller vibrates (can’t see the ‘blue’ zone as it does not show up under my player)

EDIT: I wrote this in frustration as I was losing to the cats before the glitch. But the marking needs to be evened out. Darcy Moore is not getting out marked by Brad Close, ever.
