“feed the chooks” as Clive Palmer once colourfully put it.
Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen is perhaps a little more famous for saying this in respect to the media.

Unsure if Fitzpatrick is covering his arse or exercising weakness. It doesn't imbue confidence either way.

I think we all know a coach is highly unlikely to see out a rebuild this massive, but sacking Simpson at this point will achieve nothing but give people a head on a stake during a tough time. Who the coach is for the next couple of years isn't our biggest problem because nobody is getting anything out of this squad. If Simmo wants to stick around to see out his contract to take the bullets that will come, then maybe that gives his successor a cleaner run at it.

We all know what got us into this mess, a decade of poor drafting and list management. Our National draft selections (excluding rookie upgrades) read like an absolute dumpster fire.
2011 - M Newman, F McInnes
2012 - B Colledge, A Carter, M Hutchings
2013 - D Sheed, M Karpany, T Barrass, D Main
2014 - L Duggan, T Lamb, J Nelson, D Cavka, A Waterman
2015 - L Partington, T Cole, K Mutimer, M Allen
2016 - D Venables, J Rotham, W Rioli, J Waterman
2017 - J Brander, O Allen, L Ryan, B Ainsworth, J Petruccelle, H Brayshaw
2018 - X Oneil, L Foley, B Williams, J Cameron
2019 - C Jamieson, B Johnson
2020 - L Edwards, I Winder

Of our first selections from 2011 - 2017 only 2 remain, so were relying on a bunch of injured 30+ year olds to hold on. We weren't operating with top 10 picks during that time but there are far too many busts in that list for us to be competitive now. Nisbett has been a fantastic servant of the club but he really needs to take responsibly for the state of it now and its time for change. Getting an off field team in place that is going to nail the next 3-4 drafts and put the next premiership list together the only thing I care about at the moment. Coach talk is just noise.
I disagree 100%. Its critical we capitalise on early draft picks now with a good development program. Based on current evidence, our development program is very poor. And while Simmo isn't the designated development coach, it still falls under his purview and he ultimately needs to take responsibility for it.

Goss question to Paul Fitzpatrick: “The only way Adam Simpson is not going to be coaching the West Coast Eagles is if Adam Simpson quits?” Paul Fitzpatrick: Yes, right now as it stands… things always change in football but as it stands right now that’s correct.”
Ha ha I like the "right now as it stands". Basically negates the first part of his comment.

Loose to the bombers by 100 at home and by 150 to the pies at the G ought to seal the deal.
People will refuse to go to games, refuse to tune in.
We don’t need a royal commission, just make changes, take actions.

FKASC did it a few days ago. Best case would probably be that we have DeKonning and Warner instead of Kelly and Jamo. A slight upgrade but not going to change things drastically.

The sudden drop off of our late 20s/ early 30s players (many who were our top players) is what has killed us.
Sam De Koning (the KPD), Chad Warner AND Jake Bowey/Max Holmes were all taken straight after our original picks.

Not sure why you keep leaving out the 2020 first rounder and are just focusing on our 2019 picks.

We might not have taken those guys but it’s more than a break even

If Simmo isn't the designated development coach then neither will his replacement be. Sounds like we should be replacing the development coach.

Not sure how this compares to other clubs, but it looks like a very long and consistent shit-show...

We've regularly traded early draft picks. Our hit rate with mid- to late draft picks is poor. The early draft picks we've had, seem to be either complete busts (Jarrod Brander), or underperforming compared with their talent (eg, Duggan, Sheed). And other than the occasional win (ie, McGovern), our rookie picks have been complete wastes.

Bolded are the top 20 picks in that time. 4. 4 out of 44 pick in 10 years. 3 hits, one out due to injury. One no good.

We will have 4 in 2022/23 as it stands. Including 2 x top 10s (of which we have had none in 10).

If you go to picks in the top 30 over that time, we had 11. Over 10 years.

We will have 6 in 2022/23 at worst (7 if Port fall in a big hole).

The opportunities to select good players are not comparable.

He won my respect a few years back when he was on radio and went absolutely off his rocker that no W.A club traded down to get Chad Warner before the Swans did.

Proves he should atleast be our head of recruiting

I'll give Sumich one thing. He is great at identifying and developing young talent.

Our drafting hasn't been too bad. That 2018-2020 window (ie. Tim Kelly trade) has significantly stalled our progress though. Granted, we were still contending for a flag in 2019 and arguably 2020.

Lol - all I take from that is we've been pretty successful and have had dog shit selections. You've also left out the players we gained through trades, most of which became key parts of our best 22 and got us to GF in 2015 and 2018.

The four-year period between 2015-2018 where none of our first picks have paid off has really hurt us.

2015: Traded our first rounder for Redden (no complaints there), traded our way back up to pick 28 but took Luke Partington, who played 6 games, all in 2017, and the match committee seemingly didn’t rate him.

2016: Surprisingly took Venables ahead of Berry and Powell-Pepper, both of whom we were linked to in plenty of mocks. Venables played in the flag before his career was cruelly ended, but I’m not sure he ever projected as having a better career than either of those other guys.

2017: Took Brander at 13, couldn’t find a position for him, delisted him after 22 games.

2018: Ended up with two end of first round picks when Lycett left. Traded one into the following year’s draft (then gave it up in the Kelly deal), split the other and drafted O’Neill (28) as well as Williams (35). O’Neill was a bit of a bolter, hasn’t really come on and is probably set to be delisted at the end of this year.

Our strike rate has been abysmal with our second and third rounders. We filled the list with slow, weak footballers with marginally better foot skills (debatable as they can't be displayed under physical pressure) who are incapable of being effective role players. Our first rounders who made it, Sheed and Duggan, are role player level at best. It's a poor return.

Richmond won 3 flags on the back of hard running, hard tackling role players mauling and scragging the ball between half back and half forward until they could get it into the hands of one of their A-graders. Collingwoods list is built on hard running, hard tackling role players supporting their handful of A graders. We have had very poor availability of our A-graders for 2 seasons but the other players are generally incapable of providing them much help anyway.

Everyone can accept we haven't had the best draft hands due to finishing position and trading but our strike rate is still woeful due to a fundamental failure to understand what type of player is going to be a successful contributor in the current AFL landscape if they aren't in the top echelon of talent.

excluding 2020 onwards as its too early to really tell. thats like only 15 decent to serviceable players.

i'm being pretty generous to sinclair as we traded him for jetta. and venners because he won a premiership.

thats pretty shite recruiting over the last decade.

Hence the barron copboard. This is a road map to our current situation. It has little if anything to do with development or coaching- just bad recruiting, the most critical element of good list management and the resulting team success..

Ohhh, that’s right. I lost track of what happened to that pick, I forgot we’d traded it the year before. I thought it had been caught up in our switcheroo with Sydney.

I should revise my comments...

I don't know if our drafting has necessarily been bad, or whether we've drafted decent players and failed to develop them. I'm not an expert on picking out young talent... but it seems like we generally prioritise hard work and discipline over skills and abilities. Which tends to net you a player like Ainsworth, who worked his arse off, but couldn't hold a football correctly.
