I think you may be putting a little too much faith in the interestingly titled Independent Nominations Committee.

They have a wealthy stooge quota they have to maintain.

Agreed. This Committee was set up for the express purpose of ensuring the douche bags in charge can appoint their douche bag mates to the board. It certainly won't be an independent voice there to challenge existing board members' views. By default it will be someone who owes their spot on the board to someone else on the board and will therefore fall in line.

As far as I can recall, there has never been a decent alternative ticket. It would take a lot of resolve, work, time and resources to make it happen.

Yep, I reckon it’s time now the people in the shadows show their faces and offer an alternative.
I think they’d have a good chance

All depends on who is in that ticket for me, anyone to do with the Pratts, Matheisons and/or Elliotts and my votes a no

This gets back to the main symptom of our malaise. Nearly everyone is better when they’re at another club than they are at Carlton.

Hansen = great at the Dogs, hopeless at Carlton
Teague = great at the Crows, hopeless at Carlton
Swan = great at Collingwood and the Lions, hopeless at Carlton
Buttifant = great at Collingwood, hopeless at Carlton
Liddle = great at Richmond, hopeless at Carlton
Voss = great at Port, hopeless at Carlton
Russell = great at hawthorn, hopeless at Carlton
Power = great at the academy, hopeless at Carlton
Cook = great at Geelong and a West Coast, hopeless at Carlton

You could also extend to players, where I would argue both Judd and Betts had better careers externally than they did at Carlton. In fact, a better question might be: name someone in the past twenty years who has been better at Carlton than they were their previous club? You will come up with some (Heath Scotland, Lewis Young), but I am betting it won’t be many.
Some organisations are just like this.

I work in an industry that has 3 main companies.

There's almost no difference between the 3 companies in terms of resources however one of them (the one I work for) has grown steadily over the past 5 years to the point that they've gone from 3rd to first and now as big as the other two combined.

In that time they've also picked up ALL the best staff from the other two competitors despite being a long commute for the new hires and paying the same amount. They get so many people trying to join them but they have only one criteria other than competency, do they fit the culture. They've rejected 3 of the best sales people in the market because of their reputation for being arseholes.

Everybody who comes to them says the same thing, the other companies were toxic, no support with people deliberately sniping and backstabbing. And all of this culture is set from the top. Nobody will return to the old companies, I can guarantee it.

I think that's our club for 40 years except for 20 of those years cash could cover it up.

We are the club John Elliot made us and we've taken far to long to rid ourselves of the culture and people who think like it.

Pratt, Smorgan, Sticks, MLG (yes sticks remember We are Carlton * the rest), Matheison, Sayers all half wits when it comes to getting people to work together for a common cause. Just moneyed dickheads or their representatives.

Does that mean that our player management is better than Richmond's?

Good to know.

Good to know you used a player as an example that doesn't fit the criteria...

Yeah our player management is better than Richmond's, despite the fact we've been shit for 20+ years while they've just ended a dynasty winning 3 flags...

fwiw, he got hooked on meth while he was playing for us... not after he got traded to Richmond...

It was setup to help remove jobs for the boys, we had 3 or 4 lawyers/barristers at one stage on the bloody board. Was ridiculous.

When you bring a board down from 14 to 6-8 you need to find specific skill sets to help implement changes.

All companies do it, and vast majority of AFL clubs including the current successful clubs.

This and they can all **** off!

Ash Hansen's biggest claim to fame was being at the bulldogs when they won the flag in 2016.

Facts are he was over at the Whitten Oval coaching the ressies, absolutely nowhere near Bevo and the seniors coaching box.

He's a muppet.
What a ridiculous take. You know that how? He's well respected in the industry and considered an excellent strategist.

Whether or not that's true, almost impossible to assess from the outside. Says much more about the person judging than the person being judged.

The last team to win a flag with a poor admin was.......?

Get the off field right and the on field almost always follows.

This resignation screams tokenism.

Sayers email ...

Hi Aph,

I am writing to inform you that today the Carlton Football Club has accepted the resignation of Director Craig Mathieson.

Craig’s position as a Director would have become vacant at the end of 2024 due to him reaching his maximum term under the constitution.

His decision to resign means that the Club will now take counsel from its Independent Nominations Committee, to commence a thorough process for a Director replacement, based on the needs analysis of Board requirements and relevant skill sets.

Craig served on the Carlton Board since 2012 and we thank him for his extensive contribution to the football club throughout those 11 years of service.

I also would like to take this time to reinforce what I stated last week.

We will judge our 2023 season at the end of the year, in its totality.

Football clubs are defined by their moments of adversity and I can guarantee we will handle ours with a level-headed professionalism that Carlton people should expect.

Take care of yourselves and each other this week Bluebaggers.

I can’t wait to be with you at the ‘G on Friday night,

Luke Sayers
President

Nice timing by Sayers to * off to Italy while our club is in disarray and his legal troubles are piling up. What a joke.
His wife is turning 50, and they had planned a holiday for some time. Reported in news somewhere. Means that Patty Kinnersly may most likely be filling in as President. Interesting days ahead...

The nominations committee, that his headed by existing board members. In MLG era, it was MLG who headed it.

So any challenges to it, or different ideas, those people never make it past the committee

Its not really independent, its a misnomer, more so a way to hand pick members who they align with. Its a farce and needs to be written our of our constitution

Do you remember that thread on the Tigers board in 2016?
A colleague/mentor of mine worked on the Tigers off-field restructure at the time and is still much loved at the club and close to Brendan Gale. The correlation between Finance, Board level and Football good practice is pretty strong in his opinion (and mine FWIW) and the collective all working towards the same goal. Investments are made in the right areas, organisational blockers and obstructions are removed, and efficiencies are made.

The correlation vs causation arguments may persist with us folks outside of the bubble but that club's view is that when they sorted out the off-field politics their performances onfield picked up.

So is the outgoing President who is also neck deep in a federal investigation pertaining to ethical behaviors & financial crime the right person to be part of the decision to elect the new board member?
Mixed reports, sounds like Matheson lost it at the players. If thats true, then the wrong board member exited. Its about time the players werent cuddled anymore, they are a big part of the problem-> as unprofessional as the "look" may be...

From a PWC perspective, is Italy the new Majorca?

From a Carlton perspective, shouldnt the Carlton president be in Melbourne getting control of our malaise? Right now?

You want unprofessionalism, and bad optics, here it is.

A far bigger issue than Matheson... i am happy to see go regardless...

100%.

Water finds its own level.

Loser douche bags will appoint other losers to important roles who will appoint other losers right down through the organisation. Seen it so many times - why would a football club be any different.
