LEAGUE FLAGS CHANGES TO BIDDING SYSTEM

THE AFL has flagged a series of potential changes to its draft bidding system, but has warned that an overarching umbrella structure for bids on both father-son and academy players remains unlikely.

Speaking on Gettable this week, the AFL's CEO elect Andrew Dillon revealed that the League continues to examine ways in which it can refine the draft's bidding process.

Currently there are three different sets of bidding rules depending on whether clubs elect to place them on father-son prospects, Northern Academy graduates or Next Generation Academy (NGA) players.

Clubs can currently match father-son bids anywhere in the draft, but can only match NGA bids outside the top 40 selections. There are also a host of intricacies for Northern Academy players, such as clubs only being able to match two top-20 bids if they play finals that season.

But the League is set to continue tying up any loose ends within its bidding process, including whether clubs can match first-round bids on father-son prospects with a host of later selections.

"They are really different, a father-son versus a Northern Academy versus a Next Generation Academy. They're all in for different reasons. Having specifics around each of those three is really important for us," Dillon told Gettable.

"What I'd like to look at is that our clubs are really good at, 'You write a rule, we're going to work out what's the best way we can – not exploit the rule – but do what we're doing within the rules?'

"When we first brought in the bidding system, we had the hidden picks where clubs were aggregating heaps of picks. We moved to change that. Sometimes, people look at it and say, 'How can you pick up a player in the early part of the draft by matching (a bid) with picks in the 40s?' Again, as we evolve, that's something to look at. We're taking feedback from clubs all the time on it." – Riley Beveridge
Yeah I heard that interview, but neither the interview or article actually outline what the changes might look like.

That’s why I asked if there is anything more that outlines what the actual changes might entail.

No mention of the removal of the 20% percent discount on first round bids.

No mention in what if they will stop the trading of first round picks, though that is hinted at.

Yep push it all down 1 with potential mckay compo and/or first round pp after our first pick

Either way I’m expecting pick 3 and 4 in this draft. Unless we win majority of the last 9 games/McKay decides to stay

Does anyone know if there is a way to download the championship games so you can watch them without any internet?

Last thing the Dogs need is a rebounding half back. Suns won’t have that pick 10 because they’ll have matched with it, so either Wilson, Tholstrup, or Sanders to us.

After watching all of the u18 champs games, have decided to stick my neck out and make a top 50. I have not seen much of the SA/WA boys outside of the champs, so probably not that close on a bunch of them. But have watched quite a few Coates matches this year.

Don't think there's a huge amount between the top 3, but feel Reid is the ahead by a small margin.

Watson might be the hardest to place of the top 10, on talent he's as good as any, just unsure how high clubs will go on him purely based on his height. Could see him going anywhere from 2-9.

Let me know if you think I have hugely overrated or missed anyone :)

There is some serious Will-power, not to be confused with Wil Powell, in this draft.

If that happens their list manager should step down. Adding 2 more elite mid only talents when the rest of their team is an absolute basket case would be nuts
Some believe in the "draft talent, trade needs" mantra.

A midfield core of LDU, Wardlaw, Phillips, Ford, Scott, Thomas, Sanders, McKercher is insane to go with Stepho and Sheezel who both want to get minutes. And I've probably missed someone. It's like AFL Fantasy but on-field. And spreading that out between HF/HB doesn't fix the situation, either.

But I can easily see it happening.

Still don’t reckon this happens. Trying to recognise his indigenous heritage now sound like north are cooking something dodgy up.
Also feels like it cheapens the NGA system. The whole point of recognising indigenous background is so clubs focus on developing disadvantaged kids. If he’s just some random kid who may or may not turn out to have indigenous background, why does he require special treatment?

Wouldn't it be pointless anyway, given clubs cannot match a bid on NGA inside the top 40 picks? Or is there some kind of loop hole North would be trying to exploit? The AFL wouldn't allow it anyway.

They'd apply to be able to automatically add him to their list, like Gold Coast could do a couple years ago.

It was the Josh squad in 2021. Rachele, Gibcus, Sinn, Ward in the first round and Goater not long after.

Hopefully next year still remains the year of the Sam.

Lalor.
Fanning.
Marshall.

There might be others I'm missing.
