Grundy is a ruckman…. Ask Tommy Hawkins to be a roaming half forward around the 50m arc next year, so we can develop and progress our forward line into the future. Can’t do it…. He is a one position player.

Doesn't Hawkins tend to do that already

Tom Hawkins is at the very end of his career, but he would have been able to be a roaming half forward when he was at the peak of his athletic powers. In fact, when he was at peak athletic ability he covered a huge amount of ground.

Grundy over the last 3 years has theoretically been in his physical prime, he should be able to play a hybrid role that his team asked him to play. It seems to me that he was too stubborn to accept a different role than what he wanted.

Plenty of players have accepted different roles for the betterment of the team. Stanley was able to adapt his role, James Kelly played his entire career out of position for the good of the team. Tom Lonergan did it, hell Jimmy Bartel played a tagging role in a GF because it was what we needed.

Grundy is either unwilling or unable.

He has also been run out of 2 clubs in less than 13 months. That is a very bad sign. He had worn out his welcome at Melbourne within half a season.

Sydney are welcome to him.

The irony is we all know how Hawkins went when forced to play ruck at the start of his career. It certainly wasn’t good, but it doesn’t mean he was a bad, selfish or inherently lazy play.

Yet when Grundy is forced to play forward..

How many VFL games did Grundy play in 21 & 22 just out of curiosity.

If being stuck behind the best ruckman (comfortably) of the last ten years makes him washed up then it is certainly a tough crowd in here these days.

If Geelong handed over a middle of the road pick for him I have no doubt the narrative would be completely different.
Most over rated ruck man I’ve seen and read about in years.
He is a solid B grader.
I’ll give him his kudos.
He had a purple patch of 2-3 years where he dominated SuperCoach scores yet even with 50-60 even 70 hit outs he and his elite midfield couldn’t get it done.
On VFL games couldn’t tell u the number… but more than any other heralded A grader.

He's just what our midfield needs.

I don't disagree, but he's not a well boy at the moment, and he's definitely not what our club or more easily influenced younger players - Tyson Stengle as an example - need.

At his best he's an absolute A grader, but he's going the way of Ben Cousins at the moment.

Who are we realistically looking at with pick 25?? Sounds like Charlie edwards (who is very high profile and on every fan boards wish list) will be gone by that pick and same with George stevens.

Also, who are we looking at with pick 8?? I am warming to the idea of caddy if he is available… funny draft where the top key position players seem to be positioned behind the top midfielders.. usually it’s the opposite way around.

Agree, it was never worth the risk. He's in trouble, and hopefully Melbourne can get him the support he needs.

It's a massive 'if' that he'd even win us a flag if he was here. You don't risk players wellbeing, culture, & sponsorships on that 'if'.

Footy should be the last thing on his or Melbourne's mind right now. Just get him stable, that's far more important than football.

Is he on the illicit drugs??

If Melb are serious about sorting out the club and Oliver they will need to delist a few Players

I think stevens will be there at 25.

More broadly hard to say as it depends 1) whether we live trade 8 (9) on the night and 2) whether we pick BPA or needs.

That said to have a stab:
Id say reid walter mckercher watson sanders duursma and maybe curtin will go before our pick.

So 8 is mainly whichever of curtin caddy and osullivan is there (i also think we will bid on read fwiw but we wont get him) plus wilson (i can see him appealing to us even though i think top 10 is early).

Players likely there at 25 would be hardeman, murphy, stevens, roberts, clay hall, reid (archer), edwards (both charlie and mitch) ZZ and hastie.
Id love demattia at 25 but i think he goes inbetween 8 and 25.

Why is oliver considered a “train wreck”?

Because he had a seizure?

Because he as a 26 year old male needs to live with his captain because he doesnt know how to live off field.

Depends firstly on whether you believe it was indeed a 'seizure'.

Also depends on what you believe caused it.

Think you'll find a lot of people are cynical about those points.

Then he's gone and smashed car mirrors etc.

Think the indicators are there.

He has train wreck written all over him... Could turn it around but it's not going well atm.
You almost wonder if Oliver would have been better off finding a new home during the trade period, and having a fresh start after what doesn't sound like an ideal few months

Woods last year had a good trade period…. And then …..
In hindsight they did. But at the time they were not rated highly for their trades. Not bad but certainly they didn’t win the October trade level.

Actually I reckon cats would have been high post trade bringing 3 first rounders in plus a pick to a premiership team. Everybody picked us to go again. Where lots picked Collingwood to go backwards this time last year.

Just looked at fox sports 2022 trading rating. Cats got A+. Collingwood B with 9 teams getting b+ or higher! As I say there seems no correlation between rating trading period at the time and success the next year.

Actually just looking at 2021 grade where Geelong got a B and was low down. So maybe there is a correlation. When people rate your trading period as average you will win next season!
