Review 2023 National Draft Review Thread II [McKercher, Z.Duursma, Goad, W.Dawson, Hardeman, Maley]

Just fwiw on this one, to me the farm is 2 and 3 (it might be to you too). It's highly possible the club look at our extra picks and don't see them as anything more than McKay out and two freebies at the back end which have been brought in to this draft but also helped to secure our two main trade targets in Stephens and Fisher (let's say we lost a PP plus a third rounder to improve the other picks positions and add two guys we want in). The Port R1 is a fragment of the Judas trade.

Getting 3 for McKay has made this a possibility. So if we were going to say we'd still get one of our top 3 targets regardless but we attempt to trade out essentially McKay and one or two freebie picks from the AFL (or from a trade last year) for the guy on top of our board who might be generational (who knows) then I reckon North is for it. The Eagles might not be, but that's when we go back to the hand as it is.
To me it’s either 2 or 3 with 2/3 inside 20s attached.
I’d only trade 3 and 18….no more

I had a horrible dream last night, Clarko took Duursma with 2 and then did a live pick swap with melbourne for 3.
We ended up with 2, 6, 11, 15, 17, 18. I was very upset, but then he took Sanders with 6 and i woke up.

I think I've been spending too much time reading BF

Reckon the ball is in West Coat's court - come to us with a deal that isn't pick 2+3 coz that ain't happening.

Tbh if West Coast wants to sell, go work out a deal for your asset.
I suspect you're on the money here TW. Would we like Harley Reid? Yes. Are we desperate for him? No. The ball is in West Coast's court we're not going to blink first.

Can we make a deal for West Coke to not take Reid with pick one? Eg: Financial incentive. Do the rules disallow any other sort of deals?
Someone mentioned earlier that the AFL have cracked down on trades where you promise not to bid/take a player.
Not sure what they did, but I remember it being mentioned.

Not sure what else we can offer but there must be some creative genius out there that can work a deal. Just not sure what's 'legal' or not.

What about Ollie Murphy at 15?
A good key defender would be hard to pass up here.

I'm not as big on Ollie Murphy as others. He is a fantastic athlete, but his defensive craft needs some work. I would say he is a bit too reactive at times. I also think he will be a very slow burn, going to take a while to get his body ready for AFL level. On the positive side he has the movement/agility and height to play on the likes of the King Twins, Daniher, Cameron ect. I don't think he'll end up being able to play on the more physical/powerful key forwards like Hawkins ect.

In saying that I'll be stoked if we draft him, as we need these types of KP's developing on our list.

I don't have data on this but my feeling is that good KPDs are very hard to predict at 18 years old.

Its such a different world doing that role against an inexperienced 18 year old forward compared to an experienced, strong, 10 year vet. Its almost like learning a completely different position with different skills and requirements.

It makes it very risky to draft them high up unless they are bringing other skills, as well. Or unless you're just drafting a body type and athletic profile.

I think this is probably the reason we've gone state level and traded a late pick for KPDs.

Players with experience in AFL systems can not only compete but adjust easier to our system which is important too.

If clarko is overriding the list management team we are in trouble.

It's a big problem and we're seeing it happening at Essendon and Port Adelaide right now.

Port Adelaide are topping up and neglecting the draft so Kenny can have one last throw at the stumps.

Don't get me started on Brad Scott. His fingerprints are all over their boom or bust recruiting strategy.

If we weren't so well stocked of midfielders, I'd be really keen on Kane McCauliffe with a later pick. He is pretty underrated and probably the most physical player in this whole draft. Whoever drafts him will end up with a club favourite due to the way he goes about it. Tough inside mid, physical and tackles with a real intent to hurt. I always thought he wasn't rated because of his athletic profile but his testing numbers suggest he is a pretty solid athlete across the board.

I also hope we are into either Mitch Edwards or Taylor Goad. Plenty has been said about Mitchell, because he has been rated for a long time, but the raw athleticism of Taylor Goad is freakish. Being 207cm and already having a big frame means he won't take as long to physically mature as well.
Same.
Is he too much of a reach at pick 18?

Sure, we could offer them shares in a high-yield nickel mine. Oh wait, I think I got the clubs the wrong way around. What financial incentive could we offer West Coast that they wouldn't regard as pocket money?

I have a funny feeling that Freo will go after Coll pick 19 with one of their F1st in a pick swap, maybe the late one. At this range, they'll have access to Collard, Tholstrup, Hardemann or Hall basically stealing any of them under WC's 2+3=1 nose's.

I'd probably take Shoenmaker over Murphy but we're gonna need another 200cm athletic defender (only really got Nyuon) coming through to play on those athletic key forwards with big wingspans. I like the look of Will Dawson but he's pretty raw like Murphy. I reckon Roughy at Saints will be all over him at pick 21 or 40 perhaps being a hometown kid. Any idea what pick Dawson will be?
