I don't think Jones is much like Mackay at all

Completely different frame, quite an explosive and powerful player. He's more an inside mid playing on the wing.

Any chance we could move Jones v DMack discussion to that thread? This is for bigman training reports!!

Love Monday's, Wednesday's and Friday's waiting for a report from the bigman.

How lucky are we as a supporter group to have the bigman.

Footy almost here!

Agreed. At least he's improved though, so maybe he can go up even more. That'd be good. (2023 output + a little bit better), would be a serviceable player that should hold a spot for a while. No superstar, but good enough.
That’s how I view Seedsman, your typical seagull fed wingman

Jones is quite a good tackler as well, brings the player to ground and impacts the disposal

The only way I can see someone being able to hold this position is if they didn't watch a single crows game last year. He remedied a lot of the things he was criticised for earlier, started nailing key goals, especially from set shots, started to get more of the ball, hit more targets in transition and then kept doing all the things he was already doing well. Massive step up. Miles above a Mackay ceiling already.

Miles above Mackay's ceiling already?

You forgot how good Mackay was in 2009. Jones ain't sniffed that yet.

He has had more than 25 disposals once in 76 career games. Mackay did it 5 times in 2009.

The comparison between Jones and Mackay is a fair one.

Thankfully no apparent injuries from todays session although quite a few walking wounded.

Rachele was walking laps likely still recovering from that corked quad on Monday. Gollant was also only walking laps, not sure what the issue is however. Soligo the same, still limping a bit so don’t expect a return for a little while yet.

Parnell thankfully trained after hurting his shoulder on Monday. Interestingly pedlar also appeared to have a shoulder issue as well. Both wore fluro hats and did most drills except the wrestling stuff. Thilthorpe also trained fully despite having some sort of back issue on Monday.

Milera was running laps and looked pretty good, hopefully not too far off. Butts similar. Sloane was a no show.

Curtin was involved in almost all drills and looked to be moving the best I’ve seen him since the injury. He did appear to leave the track before the end but that might have been just management. Fog seemed to be in some discomfort after the running work but thankfully quickly returned and looked fine

Initial drills involved the key forwards and defenders competing for high balls, with the smalls involved if the ball hit the deck. A similar drill was done later in the session but without the smalls. I thought worrell impressed with his closing speed while max did some really good work competing against larger frames like tex and fog.

This was followed by a drill in which the blue team had to move the ball from half back and score without a turnover, with the yellow team defending. Occasionally the yellow team started off with the ball. The two teams were then separated into three with one switching out each time there was a pause in play.

Finally there was a period of match sim (about 20 minutes) with the midfield lineups quite random (ie dawson and laird were on opposing teams), but the preferred defenders (including keane, worrell, hinge, max and borlase) were up against the best forwards (tex, fog, thilthorpe, murphy, pedlar). This hasn’t typically been the case this summer and was good to see a more even and competitive hit out.

Once again rankine played almost exclusively through the midfield and I thought he was the most dominant player. His acceleration and clean hands in congestion are a real weapon and his running capacity allows him to find space and accumulate as well. I love him as a forward but hopefully his form in the middle encourages our coaches to use him more in there, particularly if he’s struggling to get into the game. I think he’s the player on our list most likely to explode this year.

Some more player thoughts:

Berry - once again one of the better performers and once again his kicking was much improved. Hopefully he doesn’t go back to old habits when the games start but he does appear to have really focussed on this part of his game. Didn’t see him fluff one kick today. Looks sharp.

Crouch - almost always looked to moved the ball on quickly after taking a mark which has been a trait of his throughout the summer. Ball use was excellent once again and is cutting the angles nicely.

Curtin - a bit quiet in the match sim but in the ball movement drills prior he was excellent. Did the patented sidesteps multiple times (including a beauty on tex who was on the mark) and ball use was lovely as always. Also took a couple good intercept marks. Was found out a bit with his positioning in the match sim allowing madgen to get away from him a couple times but otherwise should take a lot of confidence from today.

Dawson - back to some of his best today. Tell you what though, between him, worrell and curtin all training and with hats on it can be hard at times to know who is who from a distance!

Cook - once again was a bit quiet. Had one lovely moment where he spun on a dime in the corridor and laced out madgen with a 40m dart for a goal, but otherwise needs to find a way of getting more involved if he wants to get into the team.

Hamill - was one of the best in the ball movement drills. When given space he is just so damaging with that speed. Would be a great player if he was stronger and had more awareness.

McHenry - was actually one of the best throughout the entire session. For some reason he always trains with a white towel hanging off his shorts, no idea why. He was very dynamic today though and much improved with his decision making.

Nankervis - had a couple of questionable disposals but gee what an athlete and such a lovely mark of the footy. He is a serious aerial threat and so quick on the deck too. Hopefully the coaches are seeing what I’m seeing.

Love your work Bigman

When I retire (in another 15-20 years) i cant wait to be able to go and watch the boys train all the time. It will drive my wife nuts as well.

It's like back in the old days when players used to tie an onion to their belts, which was the style at the time.

Thank you, big man!

I know we've settled Nankervis in the behind the ball but I remember him playing up fwd in the sanfl in his first few games. Do you think he could fill the McAdams role up fwd better then Cook. He's faster then Cook, can play in the midfield and more an aerial threat.

Kitm it’s an interesting thought, I did notice in his first year however when nank played predominately forward he did often struggle to get into the game and seemed to much prefer the space of the wing where he can express himself a bit more and use his running ability which is now right up with the best in our squad.

He’s come a long way in his football since then of course so I wouldn’t rule it out, but I do also feel cook has more of an innate goal sense and he is a smarter user of the ball than nank.

Ideally both at least make the extended squad against port/west coast but if I was to choose only one I think nank is training better at the moment whereas cook has gone a bit quiet. But I think that would be as a wing/half back for now.

Chayce reminds me a lot of David Mackay. Tries hard, great work ethic, reasonable skills, but his ceiling is capped at 16 to 20 possession games with no real hurt factor. I think he is well suited to half back or small defender, as he is definitely in our best side, and he is very accountable.
I just don’t think we can put him on the wing as it is just too important a position for fast transition and good forward entry. Just look at Isaac Smiths game in the Gand final a couple of years ago.
I think that's a weird comparison.

Chance loves physical contact and his disposal by foot is really damaging.

Both maybe haven't been great accumulators, but they have more differences than similarities.

Could go one of two ways:

1. Most of the injuries are minor setbacks and become distant memories once round 1 rolls around.

2. They linger, add up, affect the early round performances and we never really recover.

Praying it’s number 1. starting to think it might be number 2.
We have the best depth across the board that we have had for quite some time . We shall be fine .
