I can't believe there is so little noise around this. There's not a logical reason why none of those teams would bid and hold Brisbane to something resembling market value. Unless making the reigning premiers stronger was the objective. It reeks of dodginess.

Why would Richmond bid on him ..there is a cash prize for the number 1 pick ...why would we hand that to Ashcroft and deny Lalor the money ..as for the other clubs ?

Well mainly because if teams in their premiership window keep getting cheap good players they will stay good for longer so eventually Richmond will probably have to beat Brisbane to make a grand final.

The system is demented though, a premiership team pays less for a gun F/S than a bottom 4 team and because their premiership windows don't align it seems the higher you are placed on the ladder the less likely a early bid comes in. kinda completely goes against the draft and equalization.

The thing that immediately grabbed my attention here was the broadcaster mentioning "respective war rooms."

My immediate thought was I need a respective war room, they sound cool. You can only imagine my dismay when I googled respective war rooms for sale and couldn't find any respective war rooms anywhere. There don't seem to be any in existance, let alone listed for sale. So it seems the AFL clubs own the only respective war rooms in the world. What do you reckon they would want for them?

Happens every year ...it just gets whinged about more when the father son goes to a club at the top ...this is why Brisbane banked a heap of " junk" picks to cover bids ...they still would have got him without any real discomfort ...next year it changes with the points allocated to picks being drastically reduced .
Personally I would have been pissed off if Richmond had bid on him at pick one as for Adelaide North and Carlton not bidding on him ...I couldn't give a Sh!t

One reason it makes perfect sense for the teams with early picks to bid on the Ashcroft types where they would go if they were in the open draft is that the higher they go, the more points they will cost, and the more points they will cost, the more your clubs later picks will come in, as more picks get swallowed up to match the bid.

That’s why teams like Sydney and Geelong go on bidding sprees. Because it brings their later picks in more.

Your list has been absolutely smashed because none of your decent players want to play for the club and you’ve been forced to gamble on kids.

North desperately wanted a KPP and will finish higher than bottom four next year so wanted to cash in and get a year into a player and you got lucky with right place, right time not Hartley “not blinking”.

Fixed it for you. Richmond made the best of a shit situation but the lengths you’ve gone to a spin a positive and intentional narrative are outrageous.

Our list is full of young draftees from 2 years like Gibcus, Brown ect
Plus most likely 2 top 5 picks next year.
There is no way clubs like Essendon will have the list we have in 3 to 4 years .
And we still have premiership players like Vlaustin, Lynch, Broad, Prestia, Nankervis and others.

Would have cost more if clubs had the balls to call his name out earlier, along with Lombard.
Understand the club with pick 1 choosing a player they can actually have but after that if there is a clear standout he should be picked.

In Carlton's case, we rated Smith #1 for us. We would have taken him ahead of Ashcroft. The top mids were quite diverse in style and Ashcroft wasn't a standout for all the watcher pre-draft. Not like Harley Reid or anything.

Earlier in the year Tyler Welsh was being touted as top 10, he was injured and his stocks dropped, came last in the 2K at the combine, so we got him with pick 59 along with our 2nd highest draft pick ever, Sid Draper at pick 4.

You wouldn't take him in front of Ashcroft. Clubs don't like bidding because they like to keep on the good side of clubs and there is nothing to gain from bidding.
Jagga is elite, but he doesn't necessarily have the upside of the other top 7 mids.
What you'll get is a Marc Murphy type who will get 25 to 30 possessions every week and be a valuable asset, but he's not tall , he isn't a bull and he can't go forward as a marking option.

Ok you rated him number one out of the gettables, but your recruiters would definately take Ashcroft if he was available imo.

Fair enough but how do you know your recruiters would not have preferred Finn O'Sullivan or Ashcroft? Recruiters keep their cards close to their chest.
It's just my opinion from what I've heard.

A draft and list with nearly as many top picks and young talent as GC 2010. And we know what a champion side that turned out to be.

This was a superdraft and we have a proven recruiting team. The Gold Coast draft was a weak draft.

What a load of BS

Being in those rooms no matter how you got there gives you first hand experience of the process.

Tokenism (and Quota’s) have proven successful in getting talented people opportunities.

There’s also no proof that everyone in those rooms making decisions is competent/Qualified (See Adrian Dodorro being in Essendons room for 20+ years) or Fox’s Draft broadcast.

all opportunities have elements of luck/chance. And frankly if teams don’t have gender diversity in their war rooms it’s pretty damning on their club culture. Lots of smart/talented women out there if your not taking advantage of that your missing out
