You realise the thread is called 'Draft winners and losers', yeah? The very premise of the thread asks for fans the evaluate all the players that were just drafted and are yet to play a single afl game....

I think Richmond supporters can be very happy with their draft haul.

Anointing it the 'greatest' of the AFL era is dumb though.

I think the surprise is how tall they went without getting a genuine ruck (Sims looks like a key forward who can chop out as 2nd ruck not a genuine number 1 ruck). Especially given their list already had a lot of developing key position players.

They've put a lot of games into Balta, Lefau, Gibcus, Bauer, Blight, Koschitzke, Miller, Ryan and Young. They've also got Fawcett and Gray yet to debut.

That's 11 fairly young talls already on their list with only Ryan possibly a genuine ruck of those guys.

Adding another 4 key position prospects feels like overkill. It only really makes sense if they don't think much of the group already on their list outside the already proven Balta.

Its okay, we'll get Sharp next year, plus another top 5er.

Jagga finished year 12 in 2023, has had a year to develop his body, and be a full time athlete, and he still weighs 70kg

Not sure there are any elite mids in the league that weigh 70kg, he will have to be an outlier, one of one, and I do not like his chances

He will get monstered when the whips are cracking all IMHO, but good luck to him, he is a ripping kid

His size concerns me too, but he isn't shifted off the ball very often, and he handled himself well in 3 VFL matches.

I argued on behalf of Kade Simpson when we first drafted him, when posters said he was too slight to make it. He turned out to be one of the most durable and courageous players in the game. Some are just built different.

I'll also note that Zac Butters was 70kg when drafted and that is who Smith models himself on.

The blues traded up for Fos as they knew Lalor was never going to slip

FOS would have been perfect as he has the game breaking ability, speed and skill to really make difference for the blues

It was all going to work out until Nth decided to take FOS instead of Tauru

Blues panicked, and took Jagga, big mistake as the bloke they need was Draper.

Brisbane - still confused how Ashcroft slid to 5.
Ess - I think the trade back was the safe smart decision and they got great value in the 30's picks and smart gambles late
Rich - don't love taking 4 talls and taking 7 inside 28 and 8 national draft picks seems kind of crazy too, but I love the first 3 picks and getting the North pick
North - I really like Finn, I really like Matt Whitlock, I like Urquhart. I don't love the value of the trade but I do love what it symbolises and who cares if North get a good player but poor value on a top 5 pick, they've had a million of them.

Neutral:
Adelaide - I've have gone Langford or Tauru but Draper is ok.
Carlton - not a huge Jagga fan - I'd probably have kept 15 and 17, but got nice value with O'Farrell and Camporeales
Collingwood - total speculative draft, don't mean that in a good or bad way
Freo - very solid work but not quite winners
Geelong - good picks at the end especially
GC - ok
GWS - love Hannaford, like Oliver and Ough, can't believe they didn't take the North offer
Haw - sure
Melbourne - not sure they gave up so much to pick Lindsay but Langford is nice
Port - really like Berry but don't love their other 2 picks as much as a lot of others do
St Kilda - borderline winner, really solid draft
Sydney - good job, like the gamble on upside with Bowman
WC - Shanahan and Davis were good value, not sure I like this draft though, still shocked they traded out of 3

That would require 2 of those talls being better than Roughead and Franklin, just for starters.

Incredibly unlikely.

It's also not an 'unprecedented' haul when GWS and GC had 'better' drafts, in regards to the pick numbers they had.

Based on averages, half your picks won't even play 100 games, let alone be superstars.

I main, I could say that if the WCE draft produces 3 Brownlow medalists, it'll be the best ever.

Possible? Yes.

Likely? Absolutely not.

Like I said, Richmond supporters are well within their rights to be chuffed with their draft haul but none of those picked project to be anywhere near as good as Daicos, Sheezel, JHF or Reid, based off their pre-draft form. Could they end up better? Sure. They don't project so though, at this stage.

What I will say was good is that they appear to have set up their spine first and foremost, thank god, it would've been a disaster if they went the North route of ignoring talls for 6 years and instead made it the focus once they'd got their mid players.

You could have held firm and had any of Tauru, Lindsay, Berry, Hotton, Reid, Trainor, etc. AND Kako.

Anyone between 6-8 would have bid.
Like the Saints did with Lombard.
We would still have Kako, wouldn't have the nice second rounders we got, and wouldn't have a second 1st rounder for next year. There's no chance we'd have both picks.

I think Matt’s a significantly better athlete and it stands out with his ability to impact with the ball on the ground and in open play. Plus he can play down back. And it’s not like he’s not big enough to go in the ruck.

I just value mobility in talls a lot.

Freo where pretty happy to pick up Bolton’s 5 year contract and gave us 10,11,18.

It had to be alot for us to consider trading a player we had contracted for 7 years in 2022 and would have been a lesser offer if he was on a one year contract.

Because if Essendon keep pick 9, if clubs don't bid, they'd be handing Essendon another free first rounder.

Brisbane only had magic beans and never had a first rounder to begin with, so it was never an issue with them.

Essendon would've lost pick 9 in the Kako bid and had nothing extra to show for it.

Big winners were Adelaide: I have Sid Draper as the best player in the draft. Welsh was good value. Only downside is they didnt take more picks and cut the list deeper

Yeah, but you made up the narrative about why Carlton traded up and that we panicked and chose Smith. Watch our war room videos and you will see how hell bent we were on Smith as soon as we landed pick 3.

How many guns does any single draft produce?

Go back and have a look. Sometimes two or three. Sometimes 5 or 6. Sometimes one.

Very, very abnormal to land 8. And near on impossible for all 8 flukily ending at one club.

So history and probability dont support that hope. Two guns and some quality B + role players is a more reasonable expectation. We will only know in 3 or 4 years..

Richmond absolutely killed the trade period.

Didn’t rate the Sims and Faull selections however it probably threw the draft into chaos Trainor and Armstrong for 21,23 more then makes up for it and then fleecing north in a mad genius way they got very good value for money with the 20s picks
