It was a horrible game and we were outplayed from the beginning. Had high hopes for this game and they let us down.

On to next week.

Hopefully the Club/Players take it a Good Kick up the Ass and we Show up breathing Fire vs Port

We really needed that 70 mms of rain originally forecast a couple of days back.
Ironically we may have gone with an extra mid in the wet, which would have been helpful with all the cramp today

If anything that was a harder watch than the same fixture to kick off last season.

Yeah Perryman and Cameron tried hard and a few others got a bit of the ball, but damn we were absolutely shithouse when they put the foot down at the end of the second and third quarter and then in the last quarter. Literally no positives to be taken out of a game like this as a team, only a long list of things to "work on".

I stupidly had some hopes we might press for a top 6 spot this year, drawing a line through that though right here and now as we are not even close to being up to the required standard for even just a team in the mix for a top 8 spot to start the season, if what we dished up today is our floor.

This was textbook bottom-six football today, feels like we are in for a lot harder of a game next week vs Port now than it did three hours ago, which I bloody hate.

But possibly the worst single component of our entire gameplan was our forward half. I have never seen a team look so impotent, structureless, and generally clueless moving the ball forward. We just bombed it long to a huge contest. Every. Single. Time. Which might work fine when you've got somebody who can actually pluck a contested grab, or bring the ball to ground... but we don't. If there's no Mason Cox in the team, this approach is simply never going to work. We know what we're getting from Mihocek, Membrey and McStay, we've seen it from the latter two for years - undersized and uncompetitive aerially when matched on the better defenders. Everything forward of centre was an absolute dumpster fire, and perhaps more concerning is the singular refusal to ever try something different. I counted two contested grabs all game - one from Cameron early, and one from McStay.
I don’t think Cox would have helped much. He’d have been pushed under the ball as easily as our other forwards. But I think your right overall they way we kept bombing the ball to contests was like we were still playing with two rucks.

Mihocek, McStay and Membery also looked like a trio of Ash Johnson’s at their worst for bits of the game but I think that has more to do with them not being able to make leads because we kept bombing it to the top of the goal square.

They didn’t

We'd better hope we can write than one off as an anomaly, because if that's indicative of our gameplan, workrate and intensity this season... we're in for a world of hurt.

Granted, GWS played that like a grand final, and granted, we looked underdone... but wow.

I haven't seen a Collingwood side so badly beaten at the contest since... geez, the bad Buckley years? GWS just wanted it more. The number of times four of our guys just stood and watched as a GWS mid bent over, picked up the footy, and burst away - without ever attempting to win the ball or even lay a tackle - was absolutely damning. Finn Callaghan and Josh Kelly - who aren't exactly contested beasts, mind you - made our entire midfield rotation look like Ryan Lonie when it came to the hard stuff.

Our workrate was also abysmal - we simply didn't have the legs to go with them in any position in the ground. Midfield too lazy to work back, leading to an astounding number of GWS entries into a wide open forwardline. If they hadn't dropped half a dozen absolute sitters of chest marks, we'd have lost by another five goals at least. Forwards too slow to apply any sort of defensive pressure to lock the ball in - it just bounced out of there effortlessly, we barely forced a repeat stoppage in F50. And defenders too hopelessly outpositoined by the absolute destruction that was occurring further up the field. It didn't matter that they were missing Hogan and Stringer when the ball was coming in to an outnumber every time. To be outnumbered so often in your own back half is more than just a concern, it's a condemnation.

There's just so little to take from that game that I'm struggling to highlight a single positive. Gameplan - huge fail. Application and intensity - bigger fail. Workrate - the most damning fail of all. I thought Quaynor, Howe and Maynard battled hard under insane pressure down back, Elliott worked hard up front, Perrryman tried in the middle but needed support, and Cameron was solid (although to be fair he probably had to be better given he was rucking against Lachie Keeffe).

I'm not even sure any of those guys won their position, but I am sure that every other player on the ground lost theirs.

To see a team so hopelessly outclassed is a real worry. It's the kind of general malaise and apathy and incompetence that the return of two good players isn't gonna fix. If the bounce back doesn't occur against Port, and we see more of the same... this could get ugly.

Let's pray it was an anomaly, huh?
Beaten at the contest? We won CP by 20.

Do you really think the players give a shit about letting you down?

They know how fickle the supposed supporters are, and how little they understand about the game.

We hit the wall physically today, and we struggled to convert our forward 50 chances.

We will bounce back.

I got it, honestly not bothered.

Likely that fella on every game day post that goes for Brisbane. Iykyk.

Or a couple of the sad sacks from Carlton.
It’s just not something people should have any expectation of being subjected to unwillingly, nor directly targeted for.

Shocking performance.
Out run, out worked, out smarted. Speed kills. Our lack of it killed us today.

Having the snail-paced quartet of Pendles, Lipinski, Sidey and Long all spending large amounts of time on the ball is a huge gift to opposition sides. Never again please. We massively lost the tackle count because our mids literally couldn’t catch theirs to tackle them.

Very sadly Pendlebury was close to our biggest liability today. It was dreadful to watch. He cannot play in the centre square anymore and if not there, then where? Will Fly gave the courage to drop him if we see more of this in coming weeks.

Lipinski is the ultimate downhill skier. Schultz has flaws but my god he works so much harder than the male model wearing No.1 on his back.

Watching Naicos hobbling around with WHE wearing the sub vest was also grim viewing. A massive ****-up of bench management.

In better news. Perryman was excellent and Allan showed more than enough to earn an extended run in the seniors. Reef was OK but just OK. I think our MMM forward line will click over coming weeks. It’s far from our biggest problem. McCreery showed ability to win the ball and break away when played on the ball in Q4. I think that needs to continue.

Assuming no injuries then….

OUT Long, Lipinski
IN Houston, DeGoey

For different reasons we also need Titch and Leggy back asap, too.
