We need to bet Port at home. Get over an injury depleted Dogs and smash a mentally weak Carlton. If we can do that we are in with a shot.
We couldn't get over an injury depleted Giants. It's a funny thing but when Briggs went down, I had this strange certainty that the Giants were going to have an inspirational victory. I even texted this thought to my son at the time. It happens so often.

We were missing players as well. Daicos went down cramping and was useless after that. No question they beat us but the injury depleted giants is a stretch. Not to mention WHE was forced to be subbed. Both teams had personnel issues

Let's bring in Cox and see what happens.

Seriously after one round. Josh stays at half back with Houston. They’ve trained it all summer. Let’s see after the next round how it works. Josh still had 28 touches today , yet he’s copping heat. Most were average today. Hardly a winner on the park.
Josh Daicos looked great ball in hand however he looked as quick as me when chasing the opposition.

Hoping it will be less of an issue when the game gets more contested in the winter.

Jaicos is a massive concern for me. Defensively unaccountable… which I could cop but his disposal was more panicked than Jack Frost today. I thought he would at least offer some sling shot offense from the backline. Yikes. Fingers crossed it was an off day…

Callaghan did as he pleased. Powerful running midfielder with a sweet left foot. Who is our version of Callaghan?

Is that what Macrae is meant to be? Lipinski? The closest would be Crisp imo (but his kicking is not as good)

Crisp, Beau and Bobby need to be more involved (preferably in the middle).

I am not sure what Hayes is like or how far away Harrison is but hopefully one of them is capable of putting pressure on Schultz to retain his spot.

While my disappointment is huge, I’m trying to find some balance in my view of the game.

We did have control of the game for extremely large parts. The first quarter we were just wasteful, and the third quarter we totally owned and again just didn’t have the scoreboard impact. It unraveled when we went to risk it all mode. I just don’t think this team is built for smaller grounds anymore, our whole style doesn’t translate to this joint or the SCG, as if the other team has high pressure and good defensive systems(GWS were excellent in this area) then it can be very hard to score freely, which is our whole thing.
I don’t think our forwards will ever play that badly again either. Every single one of them was off.

Woken up this morning even more disappointed by this result.

Not the loss. How we lost. How we played. It’s showing me I had high expectations.

Hopefully we see some changes against Port. It just feels so much like last year on repeat right now.

This +1.

Sure we added pieces but the overall concern about our age and pace was exposed for all to see, made more evident with both Nick and WHE out of commission for much of the last half.

Morning after positive thoughts;

  • Membrey worked into the game well in the second half (clearly should’ve had 2 goals)
  • Moore looks like he’s building
  • Elliott looks fit and moving well
  • We were able to get clearances
  • Lots of entries

If we hadve kicked straighter when the game was in the balance it wouldn’t have been such a dirty day.

Looking forward to playing the Power.

*Forgot to add Ed Allan. 19 touches, had his moments. Building nicely.

We got to within five points before the leaked goals at HT too and if we kicked straight, it could have been us four goals up instead. It undid all the good work we did that quarter.

And even in the third, we held possession in our forward half for a lot but got no score.

That’s why yesterday was so frustrating.

On your dot points

I don’t agree with the people writing Membrey off after one game, this is a man who kicked a lot of goals last season with an even worse Saints midfield to supply him.

Good to see Darcy back to what he’s known for, only one game I know but there was no stupid turnovers or opposition goal assists and he was clunking marks and defending well

We did have a lot of forward entries but they were poor

We need to play Beau in the center square. 3 Center clearances from 4 Center Bounce Attendances.
He needs to be there more than the junk time minutes he gets there.

Which begs the question with Pendles, I love the man but he was outplayed yesterday, struggled to understand why he was on Callaghan and not Crispy, and he should not be getting 80% CBAs at 38, trying not to go too knee jerky but it’s something we’ll eventually have to think about

When fit our main inside mids should be Jordy, Nick, Perryman with Pendles, Allan, Beau, Crispy and maybe Sidey rotating through

Sigh!!!
It feels like Groundhog Day.
The fast transition we were working on in the preseason was MIA.
The slow buildups led to GWS flooding back, making it hard to get decent F50 entries.
Then our forwards kept missing their shots.
Our skills were poor as well, and tackling pressure was non-existent.
The third quarter was excruciating - all that work for a handful of behinds, then GWS got a late goal.

On the positive side Harry Perryman was very good, and will be important for us.
It's easy to see why we were keen to get him.
Ed Allan was good - he needs to stay in the side now, as he can only get better with more games under the belt.
The Skunk barely got a sniff, but his lead and goal showed his forward craft.

Yes it was an ordinary first up effort. And yes stats can be misleading. Surprising thing is in most categories we were on top or had more. So all is not lost. Played into their defence hands by banging it in long. Tackle count low, that needs a massive lift, but we always struggle at this ground and against this side certainly the last 5-6 years. They were ripe for the taking yesterday , and whilst we were in the game for parts, we did not have too many winners on the day. Bring on next week.
