To be honest did not think all week we were going to win or get close to the dawks. Effort was there but polish and finishing touches were not. Reminds me of early 2023 when we were losing games by about 3 to 4 goals and just not good enough and then turned it all around by having a fit Jack Martin and Cunningham in the second half of that season which added that class, now there not there so who do we turn to ?
Yep season is over

Now it's time for Voss to make a statement, Kemp, Motlop either not up to it or just not working hard enough. Walsh still with the same bad habits from his junior days, head down and bang it on the boot
I'm surprised by the inclusion of Motlop. Did make a couple of bad errors early but thought overall it was a pretty good showing. Provided plenty of pressure and had some impact up the ground - just couldn't get it through the big sticks with 1.3. Seems to be a problem with a lot of our players atm

Had 13 pressure acts, Jsos 18

Beyond belief the amount of times he was wrestling with his opponent instead of being on the move, half of his kicks were toe pokes off the ground rather than putting his head over the pill

Showed slightly better defensive running, but still selective in that area

I’m actually shocked at a lot of the comments in this thread.

Hawthorn are looking like one of the best teams in the comp, got a ridiculous armchair ride by the umps while we were molested by the maggots, and the game was close.

With 5 possessions and a single score involvement from a clearly underdone Charlie, and nothing from H.
We hit the post 3 times.

There is so much room for improvement, and we clearly need to improve, but we played an extremely well drilled, highly skilled, fast team, and if we got an even break would have won. If we got +10 free kicks in the first 3 and a half quarters we would have cantered it in.

Unfortunately, we are not well drilled. We have to work so hard for our goals. Hopefully it clicks for us, and we can play closer to our potential. Because we have enough talent, even if it’s uneven.

We set up defensively pretty well for the most part, where we get found out is when we bomb the ball into our forward 50 and have zero ability to put any pressure on the defenders or trap the ball in there for repeat stoppage. The solution to this is to lower the eyes when moving the ball into the 50. But this goes further.. this involves moving the ball with dare and attack.

The one passage where we looked damaging tonight.. and there was only one.. was when Saad ran through the middle and kicked to a one-on-one which Williams won.

We are so easy to play against because we do not make the opposition genuinely have to defend. We do not move the ball quickly to put them under any form of pressure. So we slow play and kick the ball long, which the opposition have set up for. Their tall defenders bring the ball to ground, their midfielders get back and run it out by hands and then a kick to change angles. We have no ability to lock it in.

The situation is this.. we either lose playing ‘safely’ and without dare in which our disposal efficiency will always be poor because it’s contested and rushed or we try and win by moving the ball quickly and possibly lose by more. I know which I’d rather. Quick ball movement leads to more space and more chance of improving disposal efficiency. It makes the opposition have to defend and in turn their focus shifts from attacking themselves into actually having to play accountable football.

Not to mention, the slow and contested brand we play is fatiguing which leads to us slowing down in the 4th quarter. It also adds to the injury toll as the season progresses. The game always opens up into a more uncontested brand of footy from late in 3rd quarter onwards. The way we currently play we’d need to be ahead at 3/4 time to hold on.

I mentioned this back in 2023 after the Essendon loss and it’s still exactly the same issues repeating. We have not progressed at all. Systems need to change. Process needs to change. We can’t stubbornly keep trying the same thing expecting different results. The old ‘let’s go harder for longer’ can’t be our motto with modern footy. The players can’t give much more effort wise than a pressure rating of 194 across the entire match. We need to generate easier scores. Get more result for effort. This starts with game plan.

I know JSOS gets a fair bit of criticism here for his goal kicking, but it's worth remembering that he kicked four in I think his 4th most recent game for us, and he's just spent an entire preseason training with the defence which presumably means minimal goalkicking practice.

Yeh fair enough I guess we saw it differently. 6 tackles is a pretty good effort - felt like a lot of them were on bigger bodies as well. Seemed like he was the main small forward that was at every contest inside 50. And also had some impact up the ground as well. I agree he did have some moments where he should have been a bit tougher. But of the smalls I was most impressed with him. Fogarty yet to show what I know he can produce. Williams kicked a couple of goals but didn't notice him outside of that. Really feel like we need to be utilising his kicking i50 more.

The issues now is teams can pressure us and we just don't have the composure to use the ball well. We fall into the bomb it long plan. Sure that will work for a few games but time will catch us out. Also the weather did help us alot. The Bulldogs will be the decider

Put me in the surprised camp from fan reactions.

Hawks are a top 2 team, had conditions that favour them, we were missing Harry (which allows Hawks to just dump onto Charlie which we saw), got reamed by the umpires and walked away with equal scoring shots.

It was a competitive game, ultimately the hawks are a better side than us. The version of us tonight will beat the dogs, and should beat the Pies. If we are sitting here in a few weeks 3-2 with some positive vibes around the place then our season is back on track.

Our holes are obvious though and I think clearly a premiership in 2025 is out of the question. Lacking in small forward talent, nowhere near enough above average (we cant even ask for elite) ball users and a game plan that needs a lot of work (that I'm not sure the coach is interested in acknowledging)

Goals for the year are to play finals + win 1, keep TDK, and make some serious moves in the off season to plug these gaps and make a 2 year run at a flag with this group.

To be fair heis goal kicking is no worse than mckay

I think there is a real problem with our coaching, a lot more around the fundamentals, which results in us bombing, rather than game plan.
Hopefully we can sort it out.

Next week won’t be the decider. It’s round 3.
Lions lost their first 3 last year, Hawks 5.

We should beat the, though.

My question is what moves. We keep TDK we have no money who do we get rid of and who do we bring in. We need speed missing out on papley was a big miss a few years back. We aren't really a club that players want to go to.

My view is the freaks in the contest keep us in the game. Cripps and TDK. They're enough to break anybodies game plan 50% of the time. Weits covers a bit more all on his own too.
Cripps, Weitering and TDK made costly mistakes that cost us goals. Our peripheral players like Ollie, Mots, Williams, Cotts etc had a crack and were ok. It was only the pea hearts like Young and Gov who were garbage.

gee and without those three we are bottom 2. Cripps has reverted to a few years ago carrying the team. TDK needs back up and more time in forward line. weits is the one that l worry about we can't loose him but teams will start to avoid him at all costs and go through other options. Our mids still don't pressure enough but that's because their too slow

If you think about it…

Surely bombing it out of defence or into our forward line is part of the Voss plan..

Otherwise why has it been unchecked for the past 3 years? And why are Walsh, McGovern, Acres, Docherty, Hewett & Cottrell continuing to get games each week?
