There is nothing between 23 and 28 years old.
Except a whole bunch of premiership players like Fritsch, Oliver, Crybaby Petty, Spargo, Sparrow, Rivers.
Plenty to work with for our next coach.

Anyway what's wrong with older lists, Geelong/Pies weren't young.

As an aside, Pickett is not a free agent: if he goes, we will do this thing called trading and get something back for him.

Ok it's good to be optimistic about your club.

I don't have any skin in the game either way.

But your emotions are clouding your judgement.
You've got big list problems.

(As do my mob).

Fritsch will be gone end of the year as will Salem.

I'm not sure freo would swap pickett for Murphy reid, so you might be stuck with pickett as freo have a plethora of small forwards now and pickett is a player they don't need.

Your 2026 line-up minus drafted players and traded players in will be

B lever may mcvee
Hb bowey petty rivers
C Lindsay viney sharp
Hf spargo van chandler
F Johnson turner Henderson
Foll gawn Langford Windsor

Bench tbc

Traded
Petracca
Oliver
Fritsch
Salem
Pickett
Delist
Mcdonald
Campbell
Hore

Why didn't goodwin try Henderson on Rowell to tag him in the second half

What emotions? I don't care lol.
I saw a flag and cancelled my membership the next day lmao.

I don't think we have a problem with our list as much as we have a problem with our coaching.

Well at 0-3 we can put a line through finals. So that’s 2 years running after 2 straight sets exits. It’s fairly accurate to say our best chance was in 2023, however the QF was the infamous Brayshaw incident coupled with about 50 inside 50’s to 7 goals. I view that as the biggest missed opportunity.

The run is over now and the well is dry. It’s probably not to dissimilar to any good team coming to the end of an era, however the issue is that our key players are actually in their prime;

Lever
Petracca
Oliver
Pickett
Fritsch

We have veterans in May and Gawn that are in the twilight years. It’s hard. The issue with Petracca will continue to exist now that he is playing for a losing team and is likely going to be for a while. Whether he will tolerate that I don’t know. I think Oliver needs to go. He’ll be happier and better at a different club, dare I say, Geelong. You just know Mackie will be organising coffee and scones very soon. Particularly with Guthrie likely done and Dangerfield almost done.

I think Goodwin needs to call it now. He isn’t making inroads with this club and they look absolutely shot. New gameplan, updated list, new coaching panel. Just rebuild a bit and start looking to the future now before Tasmania raid the cabinet.
I hope Geelong can get an A grade midfielder. Oliver hasn't been that since 2022 really, just like Cam Guthrie hasn't been good since then.

I think the Dees were right to push for a non Covid flag in front of their supporters after 2021. Unfortunately they couldn't even give them a solitary finals win since the big Perth series. Its over now. A waste.

I don't think either will get as much as last year. Can't see him at the cats next year, though. I think he needs a young emerging midfield around him
I doubt he's at Geelong too, but that won't be the reason why.

Part of the reason we're poor in there is because it's a young midfield.

De Koning (24) Holmes (22) Smith (24) Dempsey (22) Clark (20) Clohesy (20) Knevitt (21).

It's only really Atkins and Dangerfield who run through there who are getting on in years, and Blicavs and Stewart depending on the week.

I’m not too sure tbh both that we would get him or get a better version than what he is atm.
Yep exactly, I thought he was okay against North, but he looked poor against gold coast, but at the same time Goodwin had petracca, viney and Oliver all in at the same bounce, they probably now need to go with one and change their on ball rotations. Chuck Henderson in, he's got pace and was good at wrerribee, Rivers needs to be in there, chandler as well. Goodwin seems to think if he spruiks the word love, it'll suddenly turn back to 2021 again.

Not letting Viney walk for overs to north was a major **** up. They had the ready made replacement in Rivers, whose confidence looks shot after training all preseason as a mid and not playing there.

What did North offer for Viney?

Was it ever seriously entertained or did the Viney group just exaggerate it to extract a great deal from Melbourne?

Signing up a 30 year old for 4 years seemed like jumping at shadows to me.!

I’d let one of Oliver or Petracca walk. Most likely Oliver. Take unders for him.

My gut feeling is Petracca is the one you want at the club in a rebuild. Of course I don’t know for sure, but my interpretation of the reports is that Petracca was sick of the overall club culture; whereas Oliver is part of the culture that Petracca is sick of.

Pickett seems gone and a top 10 pick plus a future first with a 2nd rounder in return seems reasonable to me (they can bluster all they want about 3 first rounders but it won’t happen).

I’d be interested in trades for Fritsch & Salem types too, not midfielders & rucks. I’d dangle those 2. Easily replaced role wise, even if not necessarily as talented to start.

Now, without having a good early pick it’s not the year to “play the kids” unless they are ready. I’d be looking at inching towards every win they can. They can definitely win games, just not make a dent in finals I think.

If they could walk away with top 10 pick for Pickett, a top 15 pick for Oliver, and a couple of 2nd rounders for Fritsch & Salem it still injects around 5-6 top 30 picks. Not quite a Richmond haul but you can rejuvenate the list quickly with also delisting Billings, McAdam & Hore types.

From there they have to just prioritise forwards in the draft. 2 genuine talks, 1 small, 1 medium flanker with their first 4 picks (let’s say 8, 12, 23, 25). In my world they’ve lost Pickett, ANB & Fritsch in 2 years, while not having any effective talls since Brown/McDonald. The only draftee to come in are JVR & Tholstrup, who I think have serious doubts on whether they make it, and the rest of replacements are Turner & Melksham types.

You back in Rivers, Windsor, Langford, Lindsay as the next gen mids while having Trac & Viney for another 3-4 years, Trac going 50/50 forward/mid.

Petty just has to be locked in as a defender. Too much time invested now to take a trade on him. You’ve also got Lever for a couple of years, & McVee. Stick fat with the defence.

It’s just they finally need to pay draft attention to the forward line. Ignored for too long. Plus the added benefit of getting these kids in to grow together, so you don’t end up with the current cohesion levels.

And I’d be looking at prioritising developing a ruck alongside Gawn, now. Give a young ruck 10-12 games as a 2nd ruck & 3rd forward, 2-3 as the only ruck (Gawn rested) & then some time in VFL.

He doesn’t want to be there.

Bont to Geelong.
Petracca to Footscray.
Butters to Melbourne.

Melbourne could still end up with net draft picks and get a much younger midfielder for their young core.
Why would Bont want to go to Geelong?
