I have bolded that line deliberately because that simply cannot be the case if at the time the club has just won a game to get into a prelim final. This comment from Sicily would make sense in your context had Port just lost, but they didn't.
There are clubs that are going up the ladder and those that are falling off.

Sicily - just like Port fans and the rest of the world - knew that Kenny had no chance against a Sydney outfit that they had even smashed a few rounds earlier.

So Kenny didn't lose but might as well have.

Hahaha did he actually read it? That was me. How far into the show did he read it out? This is what I wrote, seems like he cherry picked the text:

Gerard, the build up in the media about the Hawks / Ports game is just factually false. Port fans do not hate the Hawks and couldn't care less about the "grudge". We dislike Ken as much as them, if not more. Most are hoping it is a 100+ loss so he finally moves on and lets Carr actually take over.
Or.... many people wrote in with similar texts because its how pretty much all Port fans that aren't happy clappers feel right now.

Look, we all have our opinion of this club since 2017 in particular, but bloody hell this is awfully rich coming from the captain of a club who have won a single final in that same time period and literally had just lost to that nowhere club.

Sicily spoke there whilst on a foundation of quicksand.
A club that won 3 flags with the last in 2015, then got rid of the most successful coach in the modern era, let go of a bunch of star players, went to the bottom, then came all the way back up to competing at the pointy end?

Hawks are the opposite of a nowhere club. They're always on the move, hunting their next flag. Its why they're so successful.

I actually said to a Hok supporting mate before the game that I wasn't sure who would win but I knew it would only mean anything if Hawthorn did. If they'd gotten through us, with luck they could have gone all the way. For us it was our GF because there was never any chance whatsoever we would win a prelim, we were just wasting everyone's time.

Not only this but Hawthorn made a major error in recruiting (literally the same one Port has made) and attempted to rectify it.

Clarkson tried topping up instead of going to the draft, giving up picks in favour of "future stars" like O'Meara and Tom Mitchell.

The club gave Clarkson too much leeway and, as a result, the club spent more time than needed bottoming out.

Even Clarkson recognised this folly in 2021/2022, according to a 2024 Herald Sun profile on the club.

Port's pain, however, is just starting, except without a period of success to justify this appeasement of Hinkley.

In 2023 and 2024, Kenny was so desperate to "own the haters" that he twisted arms to enlist short-term "solutions", all of whom are not even currently performing let alone in years to come.

It's ok though because we've timed our bottoming out to be in line with an expansion club raiding the draft yet again.

Remember 2028? They'll say as Jordan Hinkley does his press conference to start his 13th season in charge

Mick McGuane is cooked

"Port gas been a consistent performer in five key areas....
Contest...
Clearance...
Territory...
Being efficient going inside 50...
Defending the ground..."

Being efficient going inside 50...

Being efficient going inside 50...

Surely there are no stats to support this because it certainly doesn't pass the eye test and it seems like every week we have more inside 50s and lose.

Cornes didn't move down back until 2004 - he was a forward in 2002 and 2003.

Guerra left because he and Choco clashed and I know that having had a personal connection to Guerra at that time. It's over 20 years ago now so I don't remember all the details, but I'm pretty sure he wanted more opportunities and Choco wasn't going to give them to him. Wasn't until he got a 3rd chance at Hawthorn that he really got his act together.
Appreciate the clarification. Seem to recall something like that with Guerra doing the rumour mill in Melbourne at the time and that was part of firming my opinion of Williams. I always thought Guerra was a good, hard and tough nut that Port has too few of, and trading him out while playing the likes of Cochrane was just stupid.

He's wrong.

We have not been a nowhere club. For the last decade the club has been located in the little village of Mediocrity which is the best place in the entire universe to be despite the white noise complaining that we need to broaden our horizons.

Shaun B from forward line to defence too, or was that in 2003?
From memory that was specifically against St Kilda as he completely nullified Milne who was their biggest weapon outside Gehrig.

Being in any way affiliated with Geelong be like ‘DIPLOMETIC IMMUNITAY! 🇿🇦

lol. Not only can I hear that guys voice, but I can see his face too. The shit our minds keep on file is ridiculous.

Things I lose as an outsider. This is one.

Earlier this week, I was completely oblivious to 1954’s reference to “map of Tasmania”.

Come on, mates. Help me out!

I'm heading overseas for about 3 weeks, leaving before Sunday's game. I hope Ken is gone by the time I come back.

I’ve been overseas forever, and the man is still there… 🤷‍♂️

You don't need to worry about the map of Tasmania any more. It's extinct.Ironically, and please do not take this personally- killed off by Brazilians.

...........and the olde thing this club always says......

"But last year, Hawthorn was 0-5 and got on this wonderful ride. Brisbane last year might have been at some point 13th on the ladder; they won the premiership. Things happen. It's crazy game. Don't get too carried away just yet." Hinkler Said.
Yeah Ken, Brisbane were 13th at one stage. You know who they played then? Port Adelaide. You don't get to turn your season around by embarassing Ken Hinkley's Port Adelaide on Adelaide Oval.

So the result was so emphatic that his comments can’t apply in this context as well?

After all if his shot goes through they’re going to the prelim not us

What I like about the Sicily quote is that he gets the timing almost exactly right. I would add two years and the deck chair but I can accept an argument that it goes back to 2016-17 and Ken's threat to go to the Gold Coast.
Is Sicily a secret lurker on this board?
