Yep, with the aid of the tele and hindsight .... In the Larkey thread he is being urged to lead at the ball .... JK was trying to honour that lead. Best option, hindsight says no, but it was doing what we are calling for. Trying to hit up a leading forward.

He's played under half a eason with us so l would be giving him more time. He's doing some nice things atm and l think we'll see an improved JK next season..

My frustration is that we had clearly been better in open play than the set shot. Handball to Stephens and I’d back him to hit up one of the other donkeys in the forward line.

He will learn from it but my frustration lies with Larkey, Jy, Parker and so many others who butchered shots at goal throughout the day.

Don’t mind him considering he’s only played 9 games. Bit of an extrovert which this team needs. Has the potential to become a pain in the arse type for opposition teams.

Not annoyed at him re that final moment. Our entire side regularly do not use the overlap handball. It’s a club issue not a Konstanty issue. Hopefully they all watch the tape and can kick the disgusting habit of defaulting to just throwing it on the boot.

For what it’s worth, I was having a think about this. I’ve always thought that adding goals + goal assists was a decent measure of a forward’s output - especially general forwards - and since we also want small forwards to tackle, why not just add up the 3 numbers?

It’s a crude stat and might benefit from adjustments in ways I’m not smart enough to figure out, but it does pass the eye test of players you generally think of as “good” coming out at the top of the list. For this season (as at a couple of weeks ago) 23 general forwards are averaging 5 or better. 23 also managed 5 or better over the whole of last season. More than 6.5 seems to be elite.



It should be within expectations for JK to come up to the standard of a goal, an assist and 3 tackles a week. Expecting him to suddenly become a 30+ goal small forward is I think missing the point. By my reckoning he’s done 5 or better in 3 out of 9 games. So he’s capable but needs to build consistency, which isn’t hard to imagine a 9-gamer is likely to do.

Great post. If I were to quibble I would say that you would downgrade the value of tackles (they're not as important as goals) and shift to score assists (you can't control where your team mate kicks it).

My off-handed comment has generated a bit of discussion. Good! It was not meant to target JK (who arguably played his best game for us thus far), it was more a general comment about lifting our expectations. Persistent losses can deaden ambition and I have a general concern that across the playing group we don't have the drive to hold ourselves to the highest standard and implicitly accept some level of mediocrity.

Agreed. 5 kicks that went out on the full next to the point post during the game is one or should I say 5 cases in point, only 1 had to score to change the result.

Dead set, his last four games:

5 disposals, two tackles, one behind
6 disposals, two tackles, one behind
4 disposals, three tackles, one goal
8 disposals, one tackle, one goal.

He's got the ball 10 or more times twice, and kicked multiple goals once. In half of his games this year he's failed to kick a goal (lucky he got one junk goal v Carlton when the game was over)

Comparable stats to Kako. You can make the argument he should be further along but it’s pretty obvious he had a dog shit run at the swans.

I hope we persist. He’s got some campaigner about him which is more than you get from most of our players for that position.

Geordie walked past me at the game and he is still rake thin. I had such high hopes for him this year but I don’t think he’s ready. His VFL numbers support that

He should continue to get a run with the lack of options we have in his role. I'd like to see Payne come in and play alongside him rather than replace him.

I like it. I reckon score involvements slightly better than goal assists though because it still credits them even though the finishing is out of their hands. Tackles inside 50 is another. Crumbs another.

For example my best eye test small forwards (excluding the likes of Greene, Keays) are:

Higgins: 1.9 + 5.9 + 1.4 + 2.6 = 11.8
Mannagh: 1.2 + 6.5 + 2 + 1.3 = 11.0
Curtis: 1.3 + 6.9 + 2.6 + 2.6 = 13.4
Humphrey: 1.6 + 6.6 + 1 + 0.8 = 9.8
Hill: 1.6 + 5.3 + 0.9 + 1.7 = 9.5
Schulz: 0.8 + 6.2 + 2.7 + 0.8 = 10.5
