Port were dreadful in the second half, and the Cats were relentless. That to me was the difference. There were some great performances from several players like Jezza, Dempsy, Smith, Holmes, Atkins, J. Henry, and I applaud them for it, but it was downhill skiing in that second half as a gutless Port just gave up. I'm guessing at this point that Paddy's injury will be mild and Bowes will be severe. Just judging by how they were walking around after the match was over. Paddy looked fine, but Bowes was still limping. I could be completely wrong, though.

What a game next Thursday will be. The Dogs won't give us an easy ride like Port did today.

The Dogs are really HOT right now. It seems most teams need a loss to get up the following week. At least both teams will have had big wins at this rate when we play them next week.

They are very hot. Our record against them at Geelong over the journey is good but this is as good as they've been in years. Will be a massive challenge for the coaches.

Who comes in for Bowser this week? Very underrated role player. I doubt they'll throw Stewy in the middle first game back.

Stewart for Bowes I'd say.
Be interesting to see what they do with dangers spot-maybe Wiltshire comes back in.
COS looks tired to me but I'm not sure we can afford to rest him this week.

Only bad thing about tonight was seeing Art Vandelay_ steal the Mitch Duncan photo I’ve had for years ;)

Mitchy’s back baby - and we look far more composed with him playing. He’s not fast, never has been, but has a very good footy brain.
300 for the lad. Share the love baby, share the love.

I know there was a lot of criticism of Neale, O Henry etc. floating around on the matchday thread, so only positive things here...

Butters' lowest possession game prior to today was 24 (vs Bulldogs) but every other game he's played has been 27+. But only 20 today. Mullin did an outstanding job.

On another note, I get the criticism of Stengle but it doesn't feel like he's not trying. He's just horribly out of form and almost everything he's doing isn't coming off (except for that perfect goal). I think he'll turn it round before too long.

Finally, Dempsey is moving into "holy s**t" territory. Was a couple of kicks away from tearing the game apart in the third. More of that, please!

The winner of next week's game will be seen as a serious top 4 contender.

Was at the game - Henry and Humphries back just made the defense such a solid unit. Middle of the field structures goin both ways were awesome. Jezza really banged up at the ground but the more he looked ginger, the better he played ! Atkins, Close, Dempsey, Humphries real grinders/running machines for us tonight.
O'Connor and Zuthrie looked much more comfortable with Henry and Humphries back. Port's forward line is dreadful, but you can only beat what's in front of you.

Interesting to hear Chris Scott's comments on Mark Blicavs in this evening's presser - reckons that he and the coaching staff were finally starting to think that Blitz' best position is in the ruck, and it's hard to disagree - he renders the actual ruck contest more or less irrelevant and adds a ton both defensively and offensively once the ball hits the deck.
I swear in 2022 Scott said "the jury was in" about Blicavs best position being midfield. Like, the guy is 34. Bit weird to be still working out where he's best suited.

Wait till he's the All Australian full forward aged 37!

Right now Blicavs is basically playing as an extra midfielder. But we would be too slow if Stanley was rucking and Blicavs was in an actual midfield spot. Somehow we made it work in 2022, but they're 3 years older and the game is evolving.

Last year he had an issue with his foot as well, so was moved to play as a defender for that reason. He's moving much better this season, so we can play him around the ball again.

Our game is built from defence.

J Henry back means SDK has more support and allows COS to play a less crucial role.

Lawson back gives us a quality distributor and allows Zuthrie to play a more traditional half back role.

When Stewart and Kolo are back we have some decisions to make. Stanley also, does blitz play more in defence?

When Kolo or Stewart are back COS might be due a rest. Duncan goes back to the 2’s, bowes probably doesn’t get back in the team after injury.

Read, agreed, admired all posts. Loving Baz, Mullin, and the Lazarus Duncan.
Whilst it was a stirring win, the first half was low scoring and concerning.
Not trying to rain on your circus but-
We won't want to bank on the Dogs missing so many, better be better from the jump.

Not having JHenry nearly cost us the Pies game and probably did cost us the Giants game. COS looking like he needs a rest but he is ploughing on as we need him too.

Mullins slowly getting to the stage where he adds to the group.

Was our forwardline that good or was it Port. Cameron put them to the sword. Neale still just in his first full year of being a regular best22 , probably still a couple years away from his best but he seems to pop in for a mark or two. OHenry really been out of form for a while but they are persisting.

Could it be that we are still trying to work our Blitz best role at 34? Need seem to say its ruck. Do tehy bring Stanley back for the Dogs? Id think we bets be careful about asking him to ruck full time as if he goes down or gets injured we need about three players to step up to cover what he adds.

Dogs will be another level..perhaps two other levels…and Im sure Smith will cop a heap of attention. We need more Smiths ..two our best recruits in recent years have been Smiths. More please.
