Same story in 2009-10 with Saints. We came up against a generational side with Geelong stacked with talent then most would argue we were incredibly unlucky not to win against Collingwood whose form that year was quite strong. Anywho, we move on unfortunately.
But saints had a few in that 22 that 2009-10 side that were rotating depth players or battlers. It happens

Nick Suban - sheesh. What a throwback.

Every successful team needs a couple of these. Regular joes that try their heart out an dhave a season or two where they're at B+ and just super reliable for the team. In the same era Hawthorn had guys like Matt Suckling that were like that.

i reckon if Freo had have landed Sydney in a grand final in that period they would have won. From memory it was always a semi or prelim.
I somehow always like Nick Suban. Yeah a dud that averaged like 13 disposals a game.

Always liked Clancee Pearce. Loved a bloke wearing number 46. He had Spider-Man tattoos LoL

He averaged 19.5 disposals a game and scored 16 goals and 10 behinds in 2012

No one on this site enjoyed what was served up tonight other than Saints supporters because we won and we won it in style.

As I said before if you want to blame the game for being bad go and complain in one of the Freo threads here or on their board.

We delivered tonight and they didn't just like when we beat Geelong back in Round 2 where Ross Lyon outsmarted Chris Scott.
So plugs... Did you watch and enjoy the 0-9 eagles beat the saints? LoL

Seems like eagles played their Grand final this round vs saints.

The week before carlton played their Grand final vs the saints

The week before that, Ross Lyon and the saints played their Grand final vs Fremantle lol

Why does this not surprise… it’s like you’re the Nick Suban of bigfooty.

They have quite a few good youngsters coming through. Quite a few mid range. That’s not their problem.
But that's exactly their problem. They have a few young kids coming through but not not enough.

And by the time players like Travaglia and Darcy are actually any good the older guys will be finishing up.

They don't have enough good players in any one age group and the core age group 24-28 is threadbare.

Club has been cursed with its top picks the last decade or so:

Billings, McCartin, Clark and Coffield and now King.

Hard to argue they were poor picks at the time, but all of them have been proven to be failures of differing degrees.

Can take a decade to remedy when you butcher your first rounders like that. The good news is that recent selections appear to be excellent in Wilson, Collard, NWM and Owens - albeit an NGA pick. Too soon to tell on Travaglia and Taure obviously.
IMO, none of Wilson, Collard or Owens are 'excellent'.

Neither is Windhager.

And Philipou has poor hands. Fumbles far too often.

Sliding Doors - could St Kilda conceivably have stuck it out at Moorabbin?

If so, they'd have the whole southern suburbs to themselves as a base. They'd have a definitive pod as a location.

I just feel like the AFL's era of "ground rationalisation" and the subsequent Docklands shenanigans have royally shafted some teams long term.

Saints best players are Sinclair (30), Marshall (29), Wilkie (29) and NWM (22).

Heavily reliant on Steele (29), McRae (30), Wood (32) and Webster (31).

Steele has been poor for a while now. Something's wrong with him. Completely dropped away as a footballer and they don't rely on him as much anymore.
Wood is also another they don't rely on heavily.

Wilkie is a gun and will be a big loss. He's like Stewart to Geelong but when you think about it, undersized and with the modern forwards all being 6ft'6 tall, perhaps all they need is to get lucky with a kpd come draft time.

But they haven't replaced them. They don't have any clearance players which is they they recruited McRae. The backline is held together by Wilkie.

Sinclair is the only Saint on the coaches vote leaderboard.

I think so....

I mean 30-35,000 seats in Moorabbin oval is better financially than 50,000 at Docklands
