Saints should have just quietly moved the magnets around at 3/4 time against Carlton last year in round 24 and they would have Harvey Langford running around.

Ever since picking Billings ahead of the Bont the Saints have some kind of pathological aversion to drafting a pure midfielder.

If I hear one more Saints fan saying that some random half assed flanker is "going to go into the midfield in a few years" I'll spew up
Why do you care so much about the Saints? You go for a successful (if slightly bland & robotic) club.
I agree with this and have been saying it for 10 years now.

Ross Lyon is good at getting spikes out of his players... but it's not sustainable the way he coaches the team.
I agree to this post to a certain extent...

I respect any coach that get the best on limited resources or limited playing squad.

Brad Scott was a solid coach at North Melbourne from 2010- mid 2019. Finals in 2012 then 2014-6 was good.

4 finals wins in 10 years is not bad. Yes 2 finals wins in 2014 (vs Essendon and cats) and another 2 in 2015 (vs tigers and swans) was solid.

Even WillHayward agrees me on that one. Considering how North Melbourne has been since 2020, that 2014-6 period is still the last time North Melbourne were a finals force.

But you because you brought up Ross Lyon...

I will always savoured the 2012-15 finals era. Nice Suban, Matt De Boer and Clancee Pearce never won Brownlows or All Australian honours but they tried their guts out

Nick Suban - sheesh. What a throwback.

Every successful team needs a couple of these. Regular joes that try their heart out an dhave a season or two where they're at B+ and just super reliable for the team. In the same era Hawthorn had guys like Matt Suckling that were like that.

i reckon if Freo had have landed Sydney in a grand final in that period they would have won. From memory it was always a semi or prelim.

People need to give the crap a rest we literally won on the last kick of the game not like we went out and dominated. Anyway if we had of lost we would be copping shit from people for tanking for better picks you can’t win sometimes. Maybe hold off at least a couple years labelling our two new picks half assed flankers

essendon's track record hasn't been stellar (though zach reid is proving the exception).
Yeah the strange thing with us is we seem to nail rookie and mid season draft picks rowan marshal , cooper Sharman, cal Wilkie even max hall is looking good compare that strike rate to our early picks hard thing to get your head around

Same story in 2009-10 with Saints. We came up against a generational side with Geelong stacked with talent then most would argue we were incredibly unlucky not to win against Collingwood whose form that year was quite strong. Anywho, we move on unfortunately.

One problem is the league gives you nothing.

Pies, Hawks, Carlton, Geelong all have political connections which helps turn money and support into flags, and extend periods of success.

North Saints and Dogs get the odd money surge/great coach/father-son luck, then they have a shot but in between they get bodyslammed by "rules tweaks" and dodgy deals.

Not making excuses, I'm critical of Saints culture in other aspects but in terms of success, #BigBias is more of a disgrace than #VICBIAS.

The league bases its finances around loading up the Pies at the G. It's win/win for the AFL and us. Then they parlay that into exciting new markets=boosts for Sydney and GWS. Other flagship clubs need to be heard...St Kilda want something? Maybe next year.

it does seem like it's alot harder for the smaller clubs, both financially and onfield, mainly of the AFL's doing

We have to get absolutely everything right to have our shot, where I think it's a bit easier for the bigger clubs to make a few more mistakes along the way

3 more goals needed to maintain no man's land status.
.....and it's gone.

At least we won't have to hear about how St Kilda have done a great job with a tough fixture list anymore.

The Port win isn't looking that good. The Geelong one was, but it's their annual grand final and under a roof. They remain pretty poor in outdoor stadium games.

What's with this new version of Ross where he does this over the top, phony laughing and joking when his team is losing?
