I can’t believe this is a game so bad that I couldnt even care about the free kick count.

And since I’ve written that, I’ve noticed and seen it get worse…

It’s games like this that make me think adding more teams and stretching the talent even thinner isn’t the answer.

The shit show at Marvel on Thursday night was 140 points total. It was a terrible game.

Yet somehow it’s the highest scoring game of the weekend so far, and the average total score of the games today is barely going to break 100.

It’s a poor comp. Even the best players can be incredibly flaky by foot. Without better coaching and development, expanding the comp will obviously make the standard worse.

I think since covid there has been plenty of good talent in the draft. I think too much talent is going through academies though.

Here’s the great thing about AFL:

You watch your team absolutely shit the bed - horrendous coaching, poor team selection, lack of effort, pathetic turnovers, missed chances. You’re furious because the opponent isn’t that good and you’ve gifted them a win. You can’t possibly think another team will have this bad an effort for the rest of the round.

Enter Brisbane and the behind party in the fourth quarter. Richmond can’t kick a goal for three quarters of footy. Gold Coast remind everyone they are absolutely pretenders, now GWS in a must win game at home against a poor team fail to even score a point in the third quarter.

My team are not going to win the flag. But there are loads of other teams who are even worse.

To not be contending when there are so many crap teams must be infuriating though. Some very average Cats teams at least make top 4 and give it a shot most seasons. The bar is low enough that you don't have to be an outstanding team to do that.
