Now, I don’t like saying this because Giggs at his best is probably the > player I’ve seen play regularly in my time following the game. Others may have been better in that time (very few though) but from what I saw, he was in a league of his own. (although given time, Ronaldo will likely become the > career player)

And to be fair, when that was probably wasn’t even his best.

So, he’s obviously a legend and arguably Manchester United’s best player over the incredible period of dominance. (imo, he is)

But right now, of the three of those such players remaining (Neville and Scholes the two others) he looks like the first requiring the fork treatment.

I hope not.
And hopefully he finds something again, as he did when he looked finished before last season.
But I doubt it.

He’s obviously well past his peak age, lacking pace and because of that the trickery just isn’t there/effective.

He’s not a liability yet but he’s not far away from being true.

It’s very sad to see such a legend on the way out and I can imagine especially so for Manchester United fans who have followed his career closely over the journey.

How long as a first team Manchester United player (which he still is, despite the depth and rotation) does he have left?

Said this at the start of the year, hes just about finished.

Last year was his final stand, and to be fair to him, he played above the level that should be expected of someone his age. Football is a young mans game however and its time he passed the baton on.

Retire whilst on the top Giggsy.

will be interesting to see what he does when he breaks Sir Bobby's record. he may just say thats it, also if he does the hammy again it may be all over as well. let the season run its course and we'll see how he fares.

He's always been a slow starter - re-evaluate at the turn of the year for mine. Have lost count of how many times people (cough Shinners) have deemed him past it and he's proved them wrong.

normally I'd agree with you. and I've defended him before against, well, not Shinners, but other detractors in the pub and on the boards. but I just think he's a bit long in the tooth to turn it around. diminishing returns.

it brings me no pleasure at all to say this, as I've always loved the guy (almost biblically)... but this time I think it's a season too far. bugger.

I think ferguson knows it as well as we do. hence the nani/anderson signings. who from the little I've seen so far (and I do know it's the earliest of early days) aren't worthy to tie his bootlaces.

In all the games I've watched us in (I.e all the EPL games) he's been pretty shocking. Always loved him, Always will but IMO I think he's done.

It's an alternate season thing I've got going....Giggs is finished, Fergie is finished, Giggs is finished, Fergie is finished......

Sadly I think you're spot on, just don't want it to be.

Seems likes the time to bring this one up again. While I didnt watch the Boro game last night, from all reports he was slow, unable to complete passes and copped a number of sparays from Sir Alex.

Thewlis said to re-evaluate his form at the turn of the season. While past that, I personally think his time as a regular first team player is gone. However, with him being within a handful of games of the record, he could be offered the oppurtunity to overtake or tie the record.

I said I'd re-evaluate at the turn of the year, and sadly if he gets the appearance record, it's going to be at the expense of the team.

Has been an amazing servant of not just United, but the English game in general, but he's done. Really sad he never played a major international tournament either but them's the breaks.

He looks a bit lost at the moment to be honest.

I'm not sure if there's anything personal or mentally that's wrong in him at the moment, but he doesn't seem to be on the same page as some of the wonder kids running around him at the moment, and it was fairly obvious to see it when United was struggling to keep a rhythm against Boro yesterday.

Its just sad so see such an awesome consistant player struggling, especially after his simply brilliant season last year.

But Giggsy's had troubles before, in 02/03 he was criticised by the press and stuck at it to end in great fashion with 2 goals against Juve away, maybe there's time to redeem himself with a few European cup games and Premier League matches to come.

What he said.

When is his contract due for an extension, it's normally the only times he plays well. Been that way for the past 6 or 7 years.

Not even close to Uniteds best over the past decade or so IMO, that has to go to Scholes.

he's contracted till the end of 09 isnt he?
next season will be the last

When is scholes contract up? Dont think he will sign another one either, either retire or have a season with oldham

I'd say Giggs is more consistant than Scholes

Really?

At his peak, I reckon the only player in the whole league more consistent than Scholes was his partner wearing 16. The beauty of Ginger is he influences game without standing out, and thus it's easy to pass him over. For every Giggs mazy run, and there were so many, there is a little deft touch/pass or an intelligent run pulling defenders out of position from Scholes.

It will be interesting to see what Giggsy does if he wins his 10 title. Would be a great way for him to go out. Unfortunately I'm not sure if he has enough good games left in him to break the record. He has been a fantastic player (my favourite) for many years but sadly even I have to conceed that he is becoming a frustrating player to watch. Thanks for the memories Giggsy, your goal against Arsenal in "The Epic" will live in my memory forever!!

He will play on next year. Still would have some value coming off the bench. I doubt he would forfeit the dough either.

With Scholes its a bit interesting, since he had different roles at different times of his carrer, at times he did the Lampard/ Gerrard job of finding a chance to shoot and going for it and being a fulcrum in between, at others he was a support striker for Van Nistelrooy, and now he's acting more like a South American number 10 as a playmaker.

Whereas Giggs has been consistantly mobile, penetrative and quick on that left wing for 18 years.

Giggsy was one of my all-taime favourites in that position. I never get sick of him, and hope he does break that games record

He's one of my favourites purely for his goal aginst Arsenal in the FA Cup in the Treble year, but this season hasn't been a good one for the great man.

Sad when this happens to the great players. Let him get the record though.
