Seems to be a ridiculously tight top 9 this season. The gap between 4th and 9th is just one game and it seems like 14 wins may be the required number to guarantee finals. Six games to go from here (seven for GC) and you've got at least six teams that could be the one to miss out.

So which team misses out on September action in 2025 and why?

If anyone has seen my recent posting history....

Most signs sadly point to Fremantle getting 9th.

I could actually see the dockers get 13 wins or even 14 wins and still get 9th.

That inferior percentage will cost them. I can't see the likes of crows or cats get 9th if their percentage is 120 percent or more.

Hawthorn and GWS don't have great percentage.

The Dogs are a game behind and travel to Brisbane next.

There's a few routes for Fremantle to make it to finals. 4-2 in the run home gets it done. 3-3 and there's still a chance.

The pressure will get to a few sides in the run home.

Even Gold Coast could slip up - Adelaide, Brisbane, GWS and away to Port in Adelaide - without Touk Miller.

If hawthorn lose against Port they dont deserve to play finals.

Carlton and Melbourne should be ok.. unless either side sacks their coach

The other 3 games are tough.

So freo or Hawthorn imo

To be fair Gold Coast are default 4th atm on 48 points.

Nobody would back Essendon to beat them up there.

It could come down to the last Sunday night of the season with the Bulldogs hosting Fremantle for 8th, with Hawthorn and GWS being the other teams in most peril.

The top 5 should be set - Adelaide Crows (18-5), Collingwood (18-5). Brisbane Lions (17-5-1), Gold Coast Suns (17-6) and Geelong (17-6) will make it barring any major upsets.

If the Giants beat Sydney and the Dogs they'll finish 6th.

Then it will come down to Hawthorn, Fremantle and the Dogs for 7th to 9th.

Hawthorn should beat PA, Carlton & Melbourne, but will need a win against Adelaide away, Collingwood at the MCG or Brisbane in Brisbane to qualify.

Fremantle will beat WCE and Carlton, should beat Port (danger game in Adelaide), but will need 1 win from away games against Collingwood and Western Bulldogs and a home game against the Brisbane Lions.

The Western Bulldogs are the team most likely to miss and here is why...

The Bulldogs should beat Essendon and West Coast, but they have been in this situation before and lost to the Eagles in Melbourne. Melbourne at the MCG is a huge danger game as the MCG may well be a foreign country considering how infrequently the Dogs play there. And they are the 3 games penciled in as wins.

First they have Brisbane at the Gabba Friday night - that will be a horror show for the Pups - I can see a 10 goal thrashing coming that will destroy their percentage and confidence.

Following is a Friday night date with Essendon, and then a Thursday night blockbuster with hated rivals GWS. Toby and friends would love to crush the Dogs' finals hopes once again, and are playing irresistible football. Plus they have tall forwards in Hogan and Cadman on fire - kryptonite for the Dogs horrible backline.

If the Bulldogs' season is somehow still alive heading into round 24, they get Fremantle at Marvel and this could be the game that decides everything.

TLDR - Western Bulldogs to finish 9th, Adelaide v Brisbane Grand Final.
