Let's be honest, Reid is still living largely off hype from junior footy.

His one complete season saw him finish ninth in the B&F at West Coast, one of the worst teams in living memory.

Yet apparently he's about to sign a deal that will guarantee him over $20 million.

It's jaw-dropping money and I'm sure it would have a few other players thinking hard.

Nick Daicos is one of the best (if not the best) players in the land. He's a couple of years older than Reid, but in super shape and a fanatical and disciplined type.

He signed his extension and his old man said it was less than $1 million per year.

What's he thinking now? What would he be worth?

Similarly with Sam Darcy... at times he's been unstoppable.

I'm sure both knew they were forgoing money when they signed... but this talk of the Reid contract must make them see what is actually possible now. What would they command?

Honestly think there could be a pang of regret for both as they watch this and the incredible way that Reid's management have played it and set up a bidding war. They knew they could get more... but this much!?

Its a gamble, on staying fit, improvement from what is already a pretty high standard in an environment which its hard to produce in, and on expectations of much higher salary caps increasingh the salaries of in-demand players.

Its a very large chunk of the cap right now, but midway through could well be a much smaller percentage of a larger cap. Or not if the next media rights doesn't produce the goods because streamers aren't getting the revenues they expected.

There are two very distinct sides to this. On one hand he’s done f**k all relative to what he’s asking which anyone can see.

At the moment you’d say he’s a what, 7/10 player? 10/10 players get $1.2-$1.5m max and we are talking Ablett to Suns territory here.

However the things that make him a 7 are not things that teenage second year players should be able to do.

Most teenagers in their second year reach that sort of tier because they get a heap of ball for their age or they kick an unusually high amount of goals for their age or they have a lot of pace for their age.

Reid already has, from what I’ve watched anyway and admittedly I don’t watch a heap of eagles games but I’ve watched enough, an unusual amount of strength for a second year midfielder who can go forward, he has goal sense and he is a very very strong mark for a kid his age. Dempsey beat him for the rising star but only through eligibility and he’s the only player from that year of nominees who is a comparable mark - but he’s not as ‘good’ a mark, he just jumps higher. Reid is a stronger mark. So he’s got that going for him over 99 per cent of kids his age.

He has a bit of mongrel. He’s fairly tough even if he lets it get to him a bit.

His skills are good and fine-tunable

He runs out games reasonably from what I’ve seen - happy to be corrected if that’s wrong. And he’s shown all this in a dogshit team.

So while he is definitely not ‘worth’ $2 million, and it’s doubtful anyone is or may ever be, he has all the traits of a player who is almost worth the investment because he’s got tools that you can build on virtually immediately

This is sort of what I mean in my post above. He’s utterly not worth that money but he’s got the tools that if you could develop him to his capacity, given how developed he already is in certain areas, make him a ready made $1m+ player
Been around long enough to know that a kid doing that in his first year of AFL is just a little bit different to your usual run of the mill talented youngster.

Worth that money?

Absolutely that's debatable. But he's got a little something extra.

That’s kind of what I’m getting at, I think for example a young player like Daicos is/was at the same age, a ‘better player’ but I don’t think he exhibited some of the unnatural traits that Reid has for a kid in his second year, if that makes sense. There are things that Reid does, in between his quiet patches, that 7-8th year players do because they are big, strong bodied players with big leaps and who can crash through opponents and who can produce things that second year players are not physically supposed to.

Matt Rowell maybe is a reasonable comparison though maybe I’m just picturing Rowell as he is now - I’m not sure he was as strong as a young player as Reid is.

this thread premise is silly. zac williams was one of the highest paid players in the competition when he signed his free agency deal. it did not mean that the genuine stars of the competition all of a sudden were 'worth' twice as much as what zac williams was getting paid.

I get what you're saying. But it pays to remember that Daicos had the luxury of not playing for one of the worst teams of the modern era. He had and has plenty of support. Reid is basically carrying our midfield while being tagged. And his numbers have been pretty darn impressive of late.

Very true he can be given his role and just play it - which he does amazingly, it must be said.

I’m not a Daicos hater just to be clear but I would be interested to see what role he would have, or how he would play it, in a weak team (notwithstanding that the Pies were off the boil last year)

Thanks for starting this thread OP.

There hasn't been enough discussion about Harley Reid for the past couple of years, so it'll be good to have one place for people to cordially discuss.

Seriously though, if you want to tie up a future gun (and he is, anyone who thinks otherwise isn’t really watching) whilst presumably you’ve got cap room now because of a weaker, younger list, and you are bound by the comp rules to use 95% cap space, then why not?
You’ve then locked in his contract for a long time, and you manage going forward as his salary takes a progressively smaller % of the cap (assuming he’s not got a clause to increase salary in line with cap increases).
It’s not a like-for-like between clubs. You don’t get a greater cap* because you’ve got better players.

* You might get ambassador money, or cost of living money, or McDonald’s franchises, or “distressed sale” farmland, but you don’t get more official cap space.

Likewise I'd love to see how Reid could go apeshit at the pies. ;)

Although obviously I very much wouldn't like to see that.

Reid’s contract situation is similar to this Family Guy scene

Vozzo - “You have a choice. You can keep Harley Reid or take these 2 mystery draft picks”
Mini - “Are you crazy we will keep Harley”
Clarke - “Woah not so fast Mini. Harley Reid is a star, but two mystery draft picks could be anything, we could even draft a Harley Reid, you know how much we have needed a clearance midfielder. We will take the picks”
Mini - “We will take the picks. We ended up with Elijah Tsatas and Ben Hobbs”

If you think its based on his current output, or even what he could produce over the next couple of seasons, just slap yourself in the face and then restrict yourself from being able to post on the interwebz.

For what he is worth to West Coast at the moment given our past few seasons, the state of our list and the upcoming entry of Tasmania and the need to spend minimum 95% of the salary cap it’s not too far off.

Daicos and Darcy and Wanganeen-Milera are not available
