Memory might be spotty after 20 years, but was it James Gwilt who had the game of his life along with Robert Harvey carving us up?

Yes. The first final I ever attended live. It was only Gwilt's second AFL game, I remember being furious that a 2-gamer could carve us up like that in a final. It was one of only four times in his entire 158 game career that he kicked multiple goals.

Meanwhile Harvey had 31 touches, 11 marks, 6 tackles and scored 3.0. **** he was a good player.

No but premiers with our level of inexperience are rare. Dees won 2 finals in 2018 (flag 21), Richmond lost in the first week of finals 13,14,15.
It's not as if our 1997 Premiership team had a lot of finals experience either. We made the PF in 1993, then no finals in 1994/95/96, then premiers in 1997.

Most of the players in that 1997 Premiership team had only played 1-3 finals (we went 1-2 in the 1993 finals series), and many had no finals experience at all. We did have a few (e.g. D Jarman) who had more finals under their belt, but most had very little experience of winning finals.

I don't know that it means much more than that teams that win flags are good for extended periods often.

There are also few teams that ought to have played finals and were denied in the way our 23 team was.

We've got players that have previously played finals in the team: Tex, ANB, Dawson, Cumming, Laird, Smith and potentially Crouch (leaving aside my view on that). That's a third or so of the team. You make a grand final and the rest have played at least two.

They're not popping up in their first ever final on grand final day.

Edit: Peatling as well

This is gonna sound strange but I think the path to a GF is easier from 2nd place than it is from 1st if there isn't a straight sets loss from the 4

2nd place plays 3rd first at home, they win straight through to the preliminary final in the preliminary they play a weaker team than they did in the qualifying final 4th or 5th

1st upon beating 4th likely play 3rd in a prelim a harder or if 3rd upset 2nd in the Qualifying final then it's 1 v 2 to make the Grand final.

Love to know the stats on how often 3rd beats 2nd compared with 4th beating 1st.

Also I think if we don't finish top two, playing Geelong at the MCG in a qualifying final is probably still a good result, if we win great home preliminary final but we get an extra game at the MCG which would help us to believe even more that we are ready.

Can Essendon forfeit the make up game.

Why would they bother. Decimated with injury, late start to Mad Monday.

Also cuts into GC Final prep time.

Give GC the four points and 10 goal win.
TV Networks, Sportsbet and a bunch of other stakeholders would have a problem with that.

Wouldn’t be surprised if both teams send out their B team though.

Essendon already playing a b team now.

Gold coast may be able to finish top 4 with a win, coming into their first ever finals series probably best not to stuff with form and the team

Lol of course the Thursday game was going to be Dons v Blues borefest.

Of course Cats get to play after us, so they will know how much to win by to pass our percentage if we are equal on points.

So predictable.

Essendon & GC were always going to be playing on Thurs & Fri, to give them as much recovery time as possible before they play their R1 game in the middle of the following week.

Cats going after us, knowing the % required... that's an AFL special.
