For all his promise, I’m still not sure Steene makes it

I know Smit is still really raw but his athleticism and strength project better than- but who knows?

Oscar seems much more capable when thrown forward
I saw him do some pretty good ruckwork in the last VFL match, plus as you say he's very useful forward.
He marks well.
He's looking stronger than at the start of the season.

Trelaor money off the books end of this season
Grundy’s off the books end of 2027

Yeah I wasn't too sure

Signed 7 year deal in 2020

So is 2020 Year 1? or 2021?

2020 - 1
2021 - 2
2022 - 3
2023 - 4
2024 - 5
2025 - 6
2026 - 7

So the money stops at the end of 2026 in above scenario

I'm just not sure how they work it out. Whether 2020 is year 1 or 2021 is

Happy with the Cameron re-signing, structurally too important, highly rated by Fly, has zero cover within the list as Cox is too far down the decline for a #1 ruck role.

That said, our job going into next year shouldn’t be to try and keep the list happy, give all our OOC players what they want and go again with a tighter salary cap. We need to make a move to sort out our midfield problem. We missed out on Rowell and we’re not getting a quality midfield partner to Nick without any sacrifice.

So turning Bobby and dare I say it Elliott into something should be on the card (as painful as it is to write because Elliott is one my all time faves). Or someone unexpected on the list that has currency. I just think we have to lose some to get some and if we’re serious we cannot go into next season with our current midfield mix.

I still find the money talk somewhat odd given we have Treloar's money coming off the books this year and Grundy to follow either next year or the one after

Should be easy to factor that into contract talks in terms of moving money around
How nauseating to think we are still paying Grundy
What a complete disaster that was

2021 was year 1.

I don't agree with you re Oscar.
You don’t have to agree, but you’re wrong if you don’t.

Steene is a chance to get there and I’ve liked his form in the back half of the year once they’ve prioritised his development over Cox’s senior ambitions, but to carry two rucks under 22 yet to play a game as your fallbacks in a year you’re planning to contend is list management suicide. Won’t happen.

It plays out one of three ways:

1. We bring in a shit truck back up in Soldo or Reeves.
2. We back in Steene as number 2 and acknowledge 2026 will be a reset.
3. We go to the draft to pluck the next Cameron out of the state leagues.

They’re listed in terms of likelihood. Signing Pendles, reports of enquiries into Reeves and probable extensions for both Steele and Howe suggests 1 is the preferred option.

These 2 deals are eye-watering (and have been a great gut-punch for the past 5+ years)
Plus Beams deal

coulda/shouda/woulda but imagine the return if we had have facilitated a Crows / Grundy trade - I think we would have had the pick for Tilthorpe…ouch

A million dollars for a ruckman who can't mark. We really should have traded him. It was way too much at the time.

I guess time will tell. I think next year will be a bit of a reset anyway.

But Ralphy said there was discontent!

From the outside looking in, I’d hypothesize that there have been 2 issues delaying this signing.

1. His current 2026 deal and whether we’d rip it up and pay him a more respectful salary, and
2. Tenure and whether we’d go to 2029 or insist on 2028.

Looks like we’ve gone the respectful route. Great for Cameron, great for the culture of the club. Very happy with the outcome. F$#@ WC.

Not as much as 1.7Mil for TDK and DC better in my opinion so seems like a bargain to me.

But you can’t really compare salaries from a side in competition to a bottom side with an open cheque book trying to entice players to move.

Thats why the Grundy deal was so ridiculous, to get bent over by one of your own players was shocking list management and a sign of the attitude of the player who isn’t defined by winning

Yep
They milked the Adelaide so called offer and held the gun to our head And fell for it hook line sinker

I wasn't in the country when all that went down with Grundy.
It's my understanding that the club pushed him out, is that not right?
I don't know who made the decision to give him such a long contract on huge $$.
Even so, if DC is going to get 850K per year, that will make up for the past few years when he's been shortchanged.
He's one of the hardest workers in the team and I would hate to think what the team would be like without him.

Would we be interested in Darcy Parish? He’s a younger Tom Mitchell.

I think the list management team had made the call to let him go. I'm sure Buckley confirmed that a while back during some interview. Then the interference came from you know where.

Yes he did, you barely had to read between the lines for it too. Eddie’s emotional approach to list management (and other senior staff weakness in opposing him) has arguably cost us years in our list build. Grundy and Beams decisions. Then you have some people criticising Hine for his actually decade long good draft haul, despite being given horrible shit sandwiches like that where you miss out on bringing in high picks and trade outs the ones you have for zero outcome.

I’m not sure that Soldo or Reeves is any better than Cox.
Cox uniquely brings his height in and is a match up headache.
I hope it’s one of your other options.
