Would be staggered if Bont doesn't make it. I suspect the selectors will see it the same way.

His name would give him a little bit of an extra boost, but there's no doubt he's still in the 'best player in the league discussion'. Frankly, the fact that he's had the season he's had despite a 6 week calf injury is pretty unbelievable.

Of my stats this year,
These are the highest scoring players overall. Bont makes it by getting to 17 games which was my cutoff.

I'd hope the selectors wouldn't just say 'He's made it to 17 games, therefore he's in', at the expense of others who have had greater season output by virtue of playing more games.

If only one made the team, would you have Richards or Bont ahead?

Bont isn't a lock yet, but he PROBABLY snags a bench spot if he has another great game. Richards probably is in though agree there. That said shouldn't be in before McCluggage, neither should. Bailey Smith is in a lot of side, has he even played well the last 6-8 weeks? Holmes has been way better for the Cats
Bailey Smith? Got 9/10 coaches votes last week and Cats' best yesterday.

Holistically, you need to think about more than just totals.

What's important is that a player can consistently back up their scores, whether that's 17 games or 23 games, we have enough at 17 to extrapolate and conclude that Bont is worth including.

If it were just 10 games, then for sure.

How about we also compare the top 5 games for each player. While not overall consistency, we want match winners, and players who can absolutely rip a game apart.

Daicos has been super consistent with no games over 100 points on my system, but scoring 80s and some 90s

Bont scored 100 last week, and both Rowell and Anderson both got over 100 twice.

Heeney got the most with 116 points.

With 2 games to go I'd expect Rowell and Anderson to go top two.

Anderson only needs 6/20 Rowell only needs 11/20 assuming
Dawson gets 10

Richards has been unbelievable and IMO he's been right up there with Dawson and Anderson. Better season than Daicos tbh. He's certainly in the team ahead of Bont based on the whole year.

But I still see Bont making it

But you can't just extrapolate additional games - it should be based on actual output.

If there weren't as many midfielders who have had massive seasons, it wouldn't be a problem.

But I don't think it's right that someone like Richards (for example) misses out due to Bont being selected, when Richards total output for the season has been superior, he did the heavy lifting whilst Bont was injured, and has been tagged more regularly than Bont...

Happy to wager anything you like that Bont makes the team. Add in Richards for that matter from the list you named. They are both 100% locks.

You know what? I wouldn't worry about the AA team if I was a bulldog supporter this week, I'd be more worried about beating Fremantle... which of course you should win.

I thought David King nailed the AA midfield last night. In particular, Holmes over Smith on the wing.
C: M.Holmes, M.Bontempelli, H.McCluggage
R: M.Gawn, N.Anderson, E.Richards
LOLOL

Bont and Richards aren't getting in the midfield ahead of all of Daicos, Dawson and Rowell.

If Bont and/or Richards get in, it will be a HFF and/or bench spot.

I just had a look at this, filtering out the bottom 9 teams:

Darcy's rating against the top 9 is even higher than his season average rating. He goes from a rating of 15.39 to 15.72. Another reason he should be a lock.

Gunston on the other hand drops from a rating of 10.71 to 6.37 when you look at his games vs the top 9.

He averages 3.2 goals, same as Darcy (excl sub game). Darcy averages 6-7x as many contested marks, with a much higher efficiency such as 1.1 less shots on goal per game for the same average goals. Gunston kicks 1.6 behinds per game to Darcy's 1.2. It isn't even close between them if you look at it objectively. The gap becomes enormous when you compare how they perform against good sides. Darcy & Cameron should be locks, the 3rd spot between Thilthorpe(my pick) Naughton & Gunston.
Ahem. Darcy has the massive benefit of playing the majority of his games at Marvel. No wind, or rain or any of the other variables of playing your football exposed to the elements. However this convenient truth is swept under the carpet. A good player, delivered the great fortune of being able to perform in conditions most favourable to him.

IMO, Richards and Naughton should be in, Bont in the squad, and Darcy on the fringe of the squad (just in or just out).
i dont think this is unreasonable.

one thing bontempelli has in his favour is the selectors can justify putting him on a forward flank moreso than they can most other midfielders.

personally have daicos, anderson, dawson, mccluggage and richards all in the team then a bit of a logjam with the freo boys x2, geelong boys x2, rowell, bontempelli, butters, dunkley etc. fighting over the other spots.

bontempelli would be likely to get the nod over most of those players from the selectors though.

How on earth wasn’t Stewart best on yesterday. Smith was elite the first half but has been middling the last half. Have Jolmes the best Cats mid

Sorry but I am going to disagree. Bont 100% proven he is worth the spot.

I have Bont AND Richards

Some unlucky mids from Serong and Mcluggage who could both make it and I wouldn't be unhappy.
