2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th

My 2c, have no reason not the trust the club if they take on Aleer.

If that happens they clearly have something in mind for him, or the price is well worthwhile, even if he’s just for backup.

Definitely has potential but will be hard to shake the athlete > footballer tag.

At the same time, won’t be disappointed if the trade doesn’t eventuate.

Can’t say the same for Ryan, pretty excited to see him in our colours and think he could be a great leader at our club.

Aleer is 24 y.o now, potential was there, not seeing it now.

The main thing that Aleer seems to bring to the table is his ability to leap high and get a spoil in, but as I mentioned late in the season- after watching one of our games from level 1- I was really surprised at just how high Hammer was able to get up over the top of packs when he was able to get a running jump at them.

He was getting head-and-shoulders above everyone else and regularly getting the big spoil in, like Dougal used to do.

So it seems to me that Aleer’s best attribute is also possibly Hammer’s.

Despite Hammer having played at least two games up forward for the year, here are the total spoils numbers for the season (the top 6 all listed, and just notable guys after that):

176- Harris Andrews
158- Mac Andrew
149- Darcy Moore
147- Brennan Cox
143- Rory Lobb
140- Anthony Caminiti
130- Tom Barrass
128- Mark Keane (AA squad)
122- Jacob Weitering
112- Sam Taylor (AA)
108- Sam Collins (AA squad)
105- Aliir Aliir
92- Tom McCartin
90- Cal Wilkie
85- Steven May
82- Josh Worrell (AA squad)
66- Josh Battle (AA team)
56- Alex Pearce

I think all those guys except for Lobb, Andrew and Hammer were either in the AA team or squad this year, or have previously made an AA team, yet a 21yo Hammer was 6th in the AFL for spoils this year. And presumably would have finished 3rd, had he played back all year.

Remind me again why we’d want to replace him with an older import, who’s best attribute also seems to be spoiling!

Especially when Hammer was also top 50 in the AFL for intercept marks and took more of them than AA Battle.

If you’ve got a 21yo doing that off one full preseason at most under his belt you’d surely want to be upgrading him to someone who’s CLEARLY better, not someone who might not even currently be as good, despite being older!

Surely sanity prevails. I didn’t see the need for Aleer when we had Wilkie, Caminiti and Tauru- with Howard another option, with us having just spent a valuable pick in a strong draft on Barrat, and with Keeler showing he can play down back if needed- so why in the wide world we’d feel the need to get him now that we have SOSOS as well is just bewildering to me.

He doesn’t seem any better than Caminiti (who’s barely done an AFL preseason) now, yet Hammer is still just a baby in AFL key position terms, so surely he takes big steps forward over the next two years. Which could make him much better than Aleer is now, when he’s the age Aleer is now.
Agree with all that - but just noting RTB has said a number of times he would really prefer to play Caminiti forward but has been forced to play him back as we are very short down there without Howard.

Anyway good experience for Caminiti knowing he can play both ends

Whether it plays out like this again or not, Lyon took a 24 year old 12 gamer Zac Dawson and turned him into a pretty reliable defender.

Arguably same with Caminiti recently.

If Ross thinks Aleer is worth chasing I’ll back it in, Howard probably has one season left and Wilkie and JSOS are in the later parts of their career.

Considering we have absolutely failed to draft and develop any key defenders in the past 12/13 years, it may just be worth the gamble.

I know we are not after a tall forward, but Chol is really good player.. is athletic, tough and has plenty of skill and composure.. Aleer is only athletic that’s all.
That’s the same commentary Chol had at his two previous clubs. Hawks have been able to get the best out of him.

Fair enough, although if we’ve got Max, Sharman, Owens and possibly Roma up front, there’s no room for either Hammer, or Keeler (or Tauru, if we wanted to play him there) up there.

I guess if he’s cheap enough to get him to be a depth option it would make sense, as we need more guys in that age range, but if we’re paying him “best 22 rates”, I’d find it very hard to make a strong argument for it.

Tauru > Aleer at this point.

Unless they want to play Tauru forward in 2026, I am really not sure why we are still into Aleer.
Might we be considering playing all 4 of Wilkie, SOSOS, Aleer/Caminiti and Tauru in the same backline?

Like Hawthorn with Barrass, Battle, Sicily and Scrimshaw?

Or like we used to have with Dawson, Fisher, Blake and Gilbert?

I imagine we’d love to be able to free Wilkie up to play more of a Sicily/Tom Stewart type role. And Tauru to play the 3rd-tall intercepting role.

Rather have Aleer doing his best GOP impersonation in defence if it means Caminiti can play forward and banish the spectre of having to watch us play week after week with a humungus gaping chasm of a hole in the fwd line because King can't get on the park.

The potential is still there. I’m sitting down to watch Freo Suns rn, and Ben Long is a good example of how some players can really bloom late, he’s 28.

I’m sure there are many other better examples (mighty_sainters gave Zac Dawson as an example) but a change of scenery, system and coaches can have an impact.

I think the potential is there for all to see, whether or not it actualises is another thing all together that most of us are carefully dubious of

With the rate that Keeler improved with each patch of senior footy he played hopefully he’ll be a serious forward/ruck option next season, with Dodson potentially being another, if Ro goes.
