The AFL is not going to upset the state government who have spent big bucks on redevelopment. The silly thing about it, it was part of the defunct commonwealth games where this incompetent government wasted 200m to subside Scotland hosting the games.

The dogs are the team designated to play in Ballarat, and I am fine with that if that if it is lieu of interstate. If somehow we could get MCG games and North can take over the Ballarat games to allow it to happen I would be all for it.
North should go to Ballarat instead of going to WA. Problem solved for Norf and for the AFL and governments.

What would the short-term and long-term financial consequences be for the club if the AFL agreed to give us two MCG home games instead of two at Ballarat, and we rebalanced which teams we play home games against across Marvel and the MCG?

For example, we played two home games each year at the MCG against two of Collingwood, Geelong, Carlton, Essendon, Hawthorn, maybe Melbourne?

The financial pain would be bearable for the club in the short-term, and in the long-term would create a more sustainable home ground model where we play more "blockbuster" games at the G and reserve Marvel for those games where we are unlikely to draw more than 50,000 for a home game.

If we are to be a BIG club sometime in the foreseeable future, I don't see Ballarat as being part of the solution. We need to be a minor MCG co-tenant and then aspire to become a major MCG co-tenant. That's how you grow the base and make the club more attractive to good players from other clubs who are on the move.

We should want what Carlton, Essendon and Geelong have : a few MCG home games each year and the remainder at Marvel (or alphabet park.)
Yes Mutt, thank you, we need to think bigger, and the time is now whilst we are a TV darling club getting the good tv timeslots.

People forgot it wasn't that long ago that the Pies played in front of 30k crowds at Vic Park. A few big games at the MCG each year would be fantastic for our growth. We need to aim big like Brenden Gale did at the Tigers.

Imagine living your life on big footy….
Leaving Homer Simpson GIF

I dont believe for a second that should Butters leave port it'll be for geographic or family reasons.

It'll be for whomever has the biggest money truck of **** off money.

The speculation about his future over the next 6 months is going to reach levels of insanity never seen in the game.

That rules out Geelong then, as it’s well known that all the players love the culture that much, nobody is paid more than $130k a year

I believe KWW is doing so, in her own quiet way. She's a savvy business woman who has definitely moved us into a very strong financial position, adding to the great work of Peter Gordon.

Did you know that we are the 2nd most asset rich club in the League?
Just behind the Eagles!

We are a middle tier club now, we've had some good game time-slots lately and can make a credible claim for more games at the G.

In my (now lengthy) time as a member and supporter, we've never been this well set up before.

I'm excited!

Shhhhh
Don't talk about facts when it comes to Dogs and how financial stronger we have become

People won't like that

Probably not, VD...

...but they will have to get used to it (and so will we), even if it takes the footy world a while to catch on 😊

The problem is she didn’t publicly criticise Bevo on SEN so she needs to go.

The system was fine in 2023 when we had Liam Jones locking down FB.

A mature FB and a few tweaks and I think we'll be ok.
long time reader, rare poster.

agree to disagree here Mof. are you talking about the 2023 season we finished 9th again?

Jones did help arrange the defence and control things down back, but at the end of the day, we still got outscored, thus missing finals. We could have scarlett, rance and sos in our backline at the moment and it wouldn't make a difference.

our defensive system is so broken its not funny. its so easy to see on game day from the stands.

Our full ground zone pushes way too high, playing a 50-60 m zone only. Once it breaks the first line, were cooked out the back. lengthen it to 80m and widen it while having blokes on the move in the zones, not stagnant. makes it harder to beat out the back.

when the ball is within 70m of the defensive goals, we regularly have 3 people go up to spoil. Mostly its the 3 talls fighting each other while their men stay down resulting in goals. Easy fix. Ruck goes up and one other designated tall. rest stay down.

While our stoppage game is generally good, we get beaten too easily sometimes. we play inside our men looking for a 1m tap off the hip giving our opponents the outside. if they win the tap, theyre already gone as they push us further in and take the outside run and space.

Zones are also a lazy mans way of defending. it requires everyone to want to work and do their job. if one doesnt hold the line or play their role it breaks down. it hides lazy players. sometimes a good ol fashioned man v man is the best option a la what we did v gws. it also shows whos being lazy or getting burnt easy.

fix the system, then add players to compliment the system, not throw money at a bloke to plug a gap.

Looking more likely that we’ll be hitting the draft hard again this year. Which I’m in favour of. Load up on young talent before Tassie come through.

Drafting well, then watching the slow burn of player development, is more satisfying than bringing in talent from elsewhere. Especially father sons .

I did mean 2024, but we were in the top 2 defences during the home and away session last year.

Do we really think that we completely changed plans over one year? Every single team plays a variation of zone defence so I don't think you can point the finger the.

I don't think much adjustment is needed to get our defence in order. Our midfield needs to defend front stoppage better, if anything. That will help our defence more than any personnel change our structure change down there.

I like Butts. He's a pure stopper but every team can carry one. I think Young is our guy but if not him, Butts worked be an amazing get for us.
This... not every backman needs to be an offensive threat that gets 20p and 10 marks a game. sometimes you actually just need a pure defensive backman that will punch and nullify their opponent. bring the ball to ground and let our dominant mids take the ball away.

We really need a hard arse defender like Hardwick or Maynard. We have a hard arse mid fielder like Newcombe, Atkins and am I dare to say Dunkley in Libba but he is near the end. So, a defender and midfielder that would run through brick walls would be worth their weight in gold in desperate finals.

I know he's still has a bit to go to make it at the level and get in the 1s first etc, but for the defender you mentioned, this is Michael Selwood.

definitely dont think you can re work the whole system in a pre season....BUT you can tinker. Start by extending and widening the zone. or only playing a zone from kickouts. then revert back to man on. yes every team plays a version of a zone, but look at the good teams. the source pressure and tackle pressure at the ball all over the ground means teams rarely break out, but if they do, its a scrap kick or a pressure kick, forcing a fumble, skyball etc. our source pressure is hit n miss.

our fwd pressure seems to be very off and on as well. balls seem to come out of our fwd line extremely easy and quick at times.

i think our actual back 6 is ok, but its the whole ground d that puts the back 6 under pressure. if the ball comes in quick and constant, the dam wall will eventually break. If you limit supply and make the balls come in slow and long, its so easy to defend. Thats a defenders dream.

Problem is the fans don't turn up unless it's a pies or freo type game. Until we get better crowds we'll be mid. I know so many dogs fans that don't go to the games.
