2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

You’re being selective with those stats, in 2023 Flanders averaged about the same as Windhager and this year it’s less.

Yes I like TDK and yes he’s younger but this is his best year, we’re projecting big things and hoping he delivers. I stand by what I said it’s marginal the payoff is in the Windhager pick and we have zero idea what that will be and what we’ll do with it, that’s if he actually leaves.

Also we’re talking a big game but Geelong will need to pay up. What happens in that pick turns into Ryan and change ?

There is so much to play out if we trade out Marshall and Windhager and yes it’s risky. I’d be happy if we can’t get what we want in picks or players to just sit on what we’ve done and take 7 to the draft then pick up Flicher.

We would be a very good team if everyone is fit with Marshall, Windhager and Steele all still in the team. As much of that is having a fit King, poo, Howard and Henry.

I’m try to be positive about what we’re doing but the rainbow and lollipops are a bit much. We’re taking risks and it looks like costing us some favourites. That will take some time to digest plus I want to see all the pieces on the board before I pop any champagne corks.
The point was that we are likely trading for Flanders thinking we can get the 2024 version with similar midfield Time.

Makes little sense targeting a bloke and thinking we are happy with his lesser years.

Sounds like Nathan Buckley doesn’t want the Melbourne job, according to Sam Edmund.

You’d have rocks in your head to want to go that club right now. They’re headed to the bottom of the ladder
They're getting Windhager so they'll be fine.

Christ.

This was done and dusted. So if they have spooked him, they must have some ****ed up expectations of where they are at

Thought Buckley was the man, a little surprised but agree it's gonna be a tough gig. Wonder who's next in line?

Meanwhile Riewoldt had finished, leaving a leadership vacuum the size of the Grand Canyon.
Jarryn Geary did a very good job bridging the cap between the Riewoldt era and the current era.

One of the most underrated saints leaders.

So an update on Windy from an unlikely source aha
But the latest episode of the Dan Gorringe Podcast (DDF) that dropped today had them discussing it and Ollie Geale (Saints Gameday Announcer and MC) who's a member of the podcast just showed Gorringe messages that he's been sending to Windhager and seems very confident that Windy is staying.

Ollie showed Gorringe the messages between him and Windhager and whilst they didnt show the content of the messages, Gorringe laughed and straight up just said "Yeah i think the Melbourne news isnt true". Dismissed it as a complete joke

Seems as if this is just more maneouvering by Windhager's agent

Earlier on, Ollie also stated that Liam Ryan had messaged him over a month ago (before Liam Ryan was even on the radar) regarding the culture and atmosphere of the club and its fans, and was seemingly following saints re-signing nasiah very closely.

This is all in the first 22 minutes of the podcast, if anyone else wants to hear it and confirm what I'm saying. The stuff about Windhager is specifically from minutes 19 to 22

They seemed very confident and firsthand messages are way more reliable than the old heads on SEN

The Hawks integrate families into the club. It's selling itself as more than a work place and it gives the benefit of a support network. Families of coaches and players sacrifice a heap. Making them feel part of something too is absolutely smart operating.

Young guys tend to join together to form little social cliques but if the older guys with kids just leave the club and head home, at that point it's just a workplace.
At the very least they introduce family planning. To be fair, Hodge often stayed behind for a few works before driving home.

Best Game Day MC in the league.

history may show they are not wrong, may show they are,but do they have to harp on and on and on and on and on with the same crap all the time?then seemingly jump for joy if the club has potentially made a blunder?

the ones that really annoy me are the ones that have to remind us that we are paying tdk 8x1.whatever it is,but they dont raise the other known fact that jelly jdg callaghan rowell mccluggage merrett brayshaw? ldu reid? all knocked us back before that(reid after that),then they fail miserably every fxxxken on and on to offer up their alternatives, considering all those players knocked us back

in my own saints frustration(and we all have it,i understand that)i have previously stated,we will never win a flag, but lets make finals once every 3 years, lets win the pre season comp(back in the day),snag the odd brownlow and continue to win or be runner up to dodo in the trade period

maybe thats what these guys want, just do bugger all, keep the players that are keeping us in 12th position year in year out and give us all the ammunition we need to stay negative=FFS

the club is trying something,if your going to bemoan it(on and on and on and on and on)maybe offer up your alternative plan, like who is coming to the saints for 1.1 million $ only?if not tdk and all those other names? i know=sam berry noah answerth blake acres jayden laverde will brodie jed bews fiorini ohalloran bailey scott t.dow florent duggan,is that the plan there not disclosing when they on and on and on?
I wouldn’t say I was negative just cautious and I think that those who aren’t happy have some valid points.

It’s just as annoying to listen to the rainbow and lollipops version of what we’re doing. Great we have a plan and yes it’s a decent one built on years of planning, salary cap, contracts etc.

Great let’s hope it works but does liking TDK mean we have to put Marshall down or pretend Windhager is a scrub etc.. The idea is to get better and win games not spend our war chest treading water.

I’m cautiously optimistic about what we’re doing, it’s ok to speculate on what we might do and to critique what we have done. I’m not sure what the few agitator's are on about to be honest, it’s a footy forum we talk rubbish.

Live and let live, people need to stop going on like they just found out Santa isn’t real.

How good are the Geelong rooms after the game, full of kids and families.

Maybe what they have going on down there is a bit more than cotton on.

Wilkie stays and captains the club next year. There's more to financial success as an AFL player than the salary you get paid by the club. Ask a few down Geelong way how it works.
This speculation all coming from the Dogs who are livid at the JSOS decision and the way it played out. They thought they had their man. It's not helped by Wilkie's moronic manager.

Marshall is the watch in my view. His deal was front-ended at the Saints and he's been in our top 3 highest paid for the last 4 years. His money reduces over the next two years at the Saints. The change to the ruck rules will not favour him as a shorter, more wrestling-type ruck. If King, Owens and Sharman are fit and firing, does he fit into our forward line? Maybe not. He could genuinely be squeezed out of our best 22 over the next 24 months - and by that stage he is 31 going on 32.

A Marshall trade could be a win-win for us. We have TDK with Dodson coming through and Keeler to support.

Windhager has improved his kicking significantly towards the end of the year. Maybe choosing not to bite off too many risky ones or playing less on the inside. His delivery inside 50 especially has really stepped up. His hand balling is close to the best in the club too.
His hand balling does release NAS a lot to be fair. I’m not too bothered if we lose him, but he has been good in that regards.

Morris did not mention Melbourne doing the same with May, Lever, Melksham, Ben Brown & Hibbert from Essendon
Also didn't mention how we also did it in 2000 (Gehrig, etc) to pretty reasonable effect aven though the results took a couple of years to start paying off consistently.

But thats Tom Morris for you yet another cont who's a lot less smart than he thinks and he wants to be careful he doesn't end up like Damien Barrett, just a bitter old gossip delighting in our every misstep - despite what he says about wanting to see us play finals.

And its "short cut", not "short circuit", Tom; you sound like a damn fool when you say it wrong.
