For all his talent, he's underachieved.
AA, Coleman medal..not sure what else he could have achieved.

Makes me angry, but it's true. For all his talent, he's underachieved.
Only to make it easier to siphon some for himself and croniesThe “vibe” I get from Andrew Demetriou at that time is that he wouldn’t have pumped money into an organisation he didn’t have direct control of.![]()
It’s more the fact that we aren’t in the market for big contracts.Looking more and more like we are less and less of a destination club![]()

Wasn't he writing 2 million dollar bonus cheques for him and the then AFL commission for bringing in the extra 2 expansion clubs?Only to make it easier to siphon some for himself and cronies

Cheeky. It’s not just members of a football club though. Their membership has more / other things and far lower tiers too."Suburban football club" is really underselling the significance of the Sharks on the Gold Coast.
Even today their membership numbers are going toe-for-toe growth wise with what the AFL has gotten out of the Suns.
The Sharks have over 55000 members (as many paid members as the Brisbane Lions). The Suns broke 30k for the first time this year.
Virtually none.My Aunty lives up there and is a member. It costs about $5 a year and she does it just to get fuel discounts. She said she knows many who do the same so not sure what % of the 55k is footy related.
You need to consider Curnow has had two ACL injuries which has taken 2-3 years off his career so that commentary is not accurate at all.For all his talent, he's underachieved.

pay a lot for that priviligeSimilar to Carlton membership - you don’t have to pay for finals tickets.![]()

There's a gap in our list between your Khamis and Gulden types that we need to reinforce. Otherwise we run the risk of leaving too much up to our top end to do in a game... which plenty of us on here have been rightfully frustrated with over the past 18 months.
He's had some horrific knee surgeries. Don't think many would be able to come back especially to win two coleman medals since. For all his talent, he's underachieved.
It absolutely isn’t. 1 bad year. 2 Coleman’s and another if not a late injury. On the seasons he’s been fit he’s been ****ing outstanding.I absolutely think its accurate.
But we are bringing in White, Evans, Buku, Chesser, Petrecelle etc. So we are a destination club of sorts; just not a destination club for high quality players. Those types go to Cats, Pies, Lions, Hawks etc...We didn't bring in Butters and Gulden so are now less of a destination club.
Which is fine by me. Plenty of good young players out there. Up to the recruiters to find them nowIt’s more the fact that we aren’t in the market for big contracts.

White and Evans were SSP picks so not really sure how they are relevant. Especially White who was taken because of the Smith ACL during the practice match. And going after names like Chesser who fits the skillset we need and helps improve our depth doesn't stop us targeting quality senior players like we have in the past with Hewett/Cerra/Saad/Williams/Acres etc. They just require much more draft capital which I'm not sure we will have this year unless Curnow gets moved on.But we are bringing in White, Evans, Buku, Chesser, Petrecelle etc. So we are a destination club of sorts; just not a destination club for high quality players. Well there is the TDK and JSoS compensation picks to work with and TDK and JSoS salary free to new players.White and Evans were SSP picks so not really sure how they are relevant. We have Dean who is expected to be bid on in the first 8-10 picks and now Ison who has started to climb the draft boards. Plus it is a bit risky to trade future picks with Walker hopefully coming in next year. So we are constrained to a certain extentWell there is the TDK and JSoS compensation picks to work with and TDK and JSoS salary free to new players.
I caught up with someone I’ve known for years through the Southport Sharks and later the Suns. He’s been heavily involved at both clubs, long before the Suns even entered the AFL, and has had a big influence on their clubs (has been a director, etc.). His take on where the Suns are at right now was interesting.
He thinks Jed Walter is gettable for the right player. I’ve often thought of Walter as the face of their academy system, but he doesn’t see it that way. The Suns don’t rely on one poster boy anymore. In his view, Ethan Read is the standout. He ticks all of Damien Hardwick’s non-negotiables and is the one they rate the highest.
The Suns are confident they’ll hang on to their core, including Ben King, for the long term. That belief, combined with Read’s development, means they could consider moving Walter. The feeling is they can’t play Walter, Read and King together in the same side. He thinks a more mobile forward would suit their balance better. Walter might be the piece that gets them that.
Walter himself is seen as a boom-or-bust type. His ceiling is very high but the floor is just as low. He’ll need the right coaching to get there and there are concerns he’s a bit more conditional than they’d like, especially compared with Read who they see as the much safer bet.
He feels that Flanders disappears out of games far too often. Can rack up possessions in a hurry but in-game consistency is a significant issue. A Walter, Flanders and picks (not 2025 as they need them) would make sense for the Suns but probably doesn't get them Curnow unless it's the most we're offered. Thinks Carlton stand firm unless we get presented overs although he suggests it might be in our best interests to take the best offer available especially if it has someone like Jed or another high-level prospect in it.
He isn’t convinced on Charlie because of the injury history and his age, although he understands why the fit makes sense
Looking at Carlton from the outside, he reckons Graham Wright is held in very high regard and feels that we'll become a juggernaut with him in three to five years. He wasn’t surprised Michael Voss was retained either. His take was that the coaching market this year was thin and the chance to make a change was 12 months ago, but we couldn’t sack Voss after last season. He thinks we need a change in list management and recruiting. He is stunned we're locking up borderline best 22 talent for multiple seasons and thinks no other club would be signing those contracts.
e: I don't think there's anything here "rumour" worthy for the no discussion thread. Another perspective valid for a post though
cerra, curnow, mckay, weitering etcwho are these players out of curiosity?
Politefully agree to disagree.
Nowhere near one of the biggest trade deals ever.
And after reading Wiz’s recent post - Walter is a boom or bust player. Sounds super risky.
We’d want proven talent back for giving proven talent. IMO
