That probably sadly won't happen.

We won't get Wilkie, we won't get Butts, we won't get Young, and now Jones is quite rightly looking for a new team.

Strap yourself in, take all your meds, be prepared and warn everyone in your household.

Come on down Stephen May!!!!!
Or Sam Frost :'(

In the event that we don't land any of our preferred defensive targets e.g. Wilkie, Butts, Young.

Do we think the club would hold assets and hope we find internal improvement for next season and try again next trade period, or panic at the last minute of the trade period this year and get a Frost, May or McGovern for example?

Would be interesting given we all assume next year will be an all-out assault on getting Butters.

If we miss out on the others, I would 100% take frost. He turned into a very solid defender in 2024

Especially with Jones leaving, we can't be going into 2026 with Gardner as the only backup KPD

In saying that, Croft is my ideal starting CHB in 2026

Take a punt on the Werribee kid (which is a very low percentage play) and we just have to bring someone in. Plan C, D or E. Even if it's a 1 year deal to let JoD / Buss develop.

If we miss out on Butts (I don't think Wilkie or Young are in play) I'd even talk to Joel Hamling.

I like Croft as a CHB long term but the kids is raw and has been playing more forward.

And Lobb is great at HB and bog-average as a deeper defender. Keep him there next year.

I saw Sam Power at a cafe just chewing on raw coffee beans and sipping boiling water. He was reading the art of war. Didn’t blink once.

The only reason we don't have peace in the Middle East is because Sam Power hasn't visited yet.

We'll be bringing forward a lot of cash if we don't land our preferred targets. Naughton, Tim etc.. in line for a nice end of year bump to clear up even more room next year.

This is the young lad you are talking about it was mentioned clubs were looking at him in the Mid - Season Draft

That's the one. Can his body hold up? Big question but if we're looking at late / rookie picks it's not the worst idea.
I'm not sure he can make the jump but there doesn't seem to be much else.

not sure if Ryan got injured leading up to the Mid-Season draft or just after it but all the talk was Essendon were looking at him.

We might as well just play Ryan Gardner and Im not joking.

I'm not sure heut more of an interceptor. Can't remember seeing him play so can't add much further.

Very tall (199cm) and lean. Doesn't get a lot of the ball but his marks stats are pretty good which suggests he's not a running KPD but more of an interceptor. Can't remember seeing him play so can't comment further.
This is from the Werribee FC website from January this year.
"For the previous two seasons, Eyers had nine games for the Cats (VFL) across 2023 and 2024. The 21-year-old key defender joined Geelong’s VFL list after a best-and-fairest winning season with the Murray Bushrangers.
Eyers’ signing also carries on Werribee’s famously strong connection with the Ovens and Murray Football League, with the defender playing for Corowa-Rutherglen and winning their 2024 club best-and-fairest, being named in the best in 13 of his 16 matches."

Why would Jones leave when we are one of the worst teams in the comp lacking in KPD ?
Did we not offer a contract ?

He’s already not viewed as best 22, and we’re publicly searching for a quality recruit (Wilkie, Butts, Young). He can see his chances of playing next year are slim and clearly believes he can still be best 22 somewhere

We were halfway through contract negotiations with Jones for a one year extension last year, but the dogs got cold feet and stopped.

I feel like if we don’t land any of our other targets, we will retain Jones. Honestly, I think we should offer him one year contract regardless as it is depth in a position we do not have much of.

I am still of the opinion that Jones would’ve given us more than Buss late in the season.

I am not against looking at the VFL for a KPD. Some players perform better in the AFL than the VFL due to the conditions and also the predictability in ball movement making it easier to read. Obviously the players are superior in the AFL but the ball movement and pattern of play is more consistent than the VFL
