2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th
AFL Draft: Wednesday, November 19th - Thursday, November 20th

“We” - as in the club?
Yes.

Obviously take this with as much salt as needed but 100% we contacted the Dogs last trade period, did our own investigation and whatever was found we backed off immediately.

This year it’s gotten even worse.

Even now any club can get him for pick 80+ in the draft and the Dogs will pay a decent heft of his salary (as much as their willing to do to pay him out) and still no club is going to touch him.

Get him for cheap well and good - Lyon will sort the guy out and if he can't he will be finished / but I would not give to much to him.
And really do we really need him with Marshall and King in the forwardline
Doesn’t matter how cheap he is, this is not the type of character you want hanging around your club,
We are doing things right, let’s not just leap at anything, because sure as nuts, it will come back to bite us in the bum.

Marshall is contracted on top of that who's to say TDK is better than him.
Both of them can fill multiple roles from CHB / CHF and ruck and resting forward - to lose Marshall who has been one of our best players for years now will show no respect for our stars who could of walked on his last contract.
I'd rather Marshall as a forward than Hammer or whoever they been slotting in there lately.

If he wants out well and good - but to lose him will make us weaker.
Yeh my whole point has been about him wanting to go (which I expect he does).

If he wants to stay by all means, if he wants out keeping him would be silly, for a host of reasons.

Can’t wait for stories of the one player “exodus” at the Saints! 🙄

If we are still discussing JUH tomorrow, then I'm going to shut down the Saints board for the weekend

Wilkie out, JUH in, what’s not to like about that lol.

If we can get it together next year, have a half decent recent run with injuries, have some young guys take a step (or two) up there’s no reason why we can’t rise quite rapidly. I feel there’s a real window of opportunity at the moment. We’re on the rise just as a bunch of other clubs are going down the toilet.
Call me nuts, but I foresee a rise akin to Adelaide 2025.
  • In a way our results and ladder position the last 2 seasons give a misleading sense of our current state for two reasons:
  1. The injuries to key personnel in Max, Howard, Crouch, Phillipou and Mashall playing injured for much of this season.
  2. Horrible 2025 fixture - my belief is that good teams should be able to roll with whatever cards they are dealt, and while I still do believe that, I've now seen how decent but vulnerable teams can have their season derailed if all the tough matches are bunched together at the start and all the cakewalks are loaded at the end of the season when there's no chance of getting into finals.
  • We have cleared out most of our dead wood from the fallow Richo-Ratts eras and are now trading in a higher class of player.
  • There is a momentum going into the next season that can be capitalised on, hopefully more Saints fans and footy fans in general will be thrilled seeing players like Nas, Mitchito the St Kilda Samurai, TDK, Flyin' Ryan, the flying Viking and flying whoever else take to the skies with speckie after speckie, we could be box office.
  • We have strengthened in our weakest area, midfield: our ruck should be more potent at centre clearances, our next generation mids now have the experience to dominate the centre without slower older players needing to run the show. Specifically: Nas, Hall, Garcia, Windhager, Boxshall, Wilson and Phillipou.
  • Max King has a point to prove and no time to waste. Looking for a Thrillthorpe-esque rise from him, a more knowledgeable and savvy continuation of Hammer's progress up top and for young Keeler to start strutting round making the F50 his own. The task for Bolton or whoever next year's fwd coach will be, is to stop the tall forwards from leading to the same spots.
  • Wilkie can't possibly be denied the captaincy any longer, I feel leadership was missing for a large part of the early games this season.
  • Likewise, I'm hoping the coaches noticed our inability to stick tackles and play through tackles and our basics skills plummet under pressure and will work specifically on this in our off-season.
  • A lot of our players have been inexperienced in the last three seasons, now we will look to capitalise on the blooding we have given them.
  • It seems as if since the Nas negotiations have concluded the clock has started ticking: we have two years to show our best players we are the real deal: year one pass mark must be one winning final, year two pass mark should be getting into PFs and not being embarrassed. I think the coaches and players now feel this.
  • The competition is more even than ever atm, Adelaide showed us the difference between 15th and 1st and its nothing extraordinary. We can do this.

I don't know why people seem to think because JUH is indigenous he'd come to our club and cease being a complete tool.

I hope we go nowhere near him. Reckon it would be a huge mistake.
I blame Mia.

I wonder the reason Mitchell doesn’t persist with him though.

What’s his flaws?
I think it's more that he's not as proven as the likes of Newcombe, Worpel, Day, Ward etc.

Hasn't shown the ability to consistently win clearance/contest, but hard to do so when you keep getting dropped/injured

They have a lot of these A- or B grade mids to the extent that a young player like Cmack can't get a look in even though he's ready

Its kinda like how Boxshall wasn't getting a game earlier in the season even tho our midfield was average - we had too many ok performers for him to be selected but not enough standouts to actually be any good as a group

Seems like a wonderful human being.

I know many are querying his acquisition but I wish him well.

Great story, it would be fantastic if he gets to that next level at St Kilda. If he can, the next few chapters in the book of his AFL career is going to make all that happened so far seem like a mere prologue.

I hope he's really ready for the full AFL experience because this isn’t a poxy expansion club with a few thousand supporters in a 2-club town where hardly anyone cares about aussie rules - he's about to step into the Real Thing.

BTW: I've been out of Australia for over 20 years but I think i saw a few posters here over the years mention that there's a decent-sized Sudanese community in the suburbs nearby St Kilda FC? Maybe having a guy from a Sth Sudanese background playing for us might make a few people in that community jump on board.
