Motlop has played 63 games for Carlton -= a 1+1 deal is generous.
Supposedly played his best game of the season in the last round against the Bombers, which was more like a practice match than a regular season game with the total lack of intensity.

This guy does some really good analysis. His summary of Motlop pretty much demonstrates what you get with him. I'd only be offering him 1 year if only to see if he can improve the deficiencies in his game, otherwise 'on yer bike mate.'

Agree. Don't understand the s**t Motlop cops considering he's tracking almost identical to Eddie Betts for the same point of his career.
Statistically he might be, but Eddie was more aerobically challenged and doing the mercurial on the regular. Quicker and way better leap as well.

I see the progress with Motlop, but there are some fair criticisms in terms of decision making under basic pressure, and true small forward may never be his go.

Great video and highlights Motlops issues when under a little bit of pressure.

He's also tracking almost identical to Lachie Henderson for the same point of his career, doesn't mean he's gonna become a handy KPD.

Motlop is an undersized mid. He's at his most dangerous inside 50 when he can straight line through a stoppage. If he was better at dropping the head and drawing high contact he'd probably do pretty well for himself.

But comparisons to Betts don't mean much. Eddie had a bag of tricks pretty much second to none, and while it did take him some time to put things together, he was doing the unimaginable from very early in his career.

I think if Motlop wants to try and develop his game, he should be watching a lot of Josh Daicos tape. That's the general small utility he could feasibly become, but to do so he needs to really knuckle down and work on his game awareness and decision making, and probably fitness as well.

He was more than a good bloke, he was the messiah according to some. Once he recommended keeping Voss on he became a spud.
Not a huge fan of Voss, but coaches can get assistance.
Bad club culture is a much harder fix, and if it's this or just sakc another coach, I'll take this way every day of the week.

Yeah I'd agree in part, but on the same note in the Essendon game where Motlop took the ball from the centre bounce, ran to 50 and kicked a goal, that's something Eddie never did. So the mecurial moments differ and go both ways.

Post where you retrieved this detail for your post to have any credibilty.

Footywire, stats comparison to the same age. Though I note you apparently didn't feel the need to post your source while claiming that Motlop and Eddie were tracking the same...

My point is that a statistical comparison paints a very incomplete picture. Two players can have similar stats and play the game in very different ways.

Comparing a player with ordinary form to another player who found another level later in their career is inherently problematic. Why compare him with Betts at the same age, and not Alex Sexton, for example?

Or Jack Petruccelle?

Motlop is conditional - too many almost go there efforts. Too much straight line to nothing. Too much fail to see the field and team mates. Too many missed set shots. Not big enough to be a inside mid. Not fast enough or smart enough in congestion to be an outside receiver. Too many 'almosts' over and over and over again. Playing a couple of ok ish games in dead rubbers when your contract is up for renewal - is very predictable meh stuff and the Club has priced it accordingly.

Yep we would all like him to suddenly click. He can start with backing himself - around the deal he has been offered. He will find it hard to keep a spot if Evans form stays good and Williams stays on the park anyway. Evans has him covered for smarts and kicking efficiency and real tackles. Moir has him covered for factor X and kicking - that the bloke I expect a lot of growth in - as well as Kempy if he can come back strong. Carlton has a few too many smalls that arent finals quality on the books.
