He’s your captain. He’s contracted. The outcome that Merrett and his manager want only eventuates if you blow the relationship up.

I think it’s pretty clear why Petroro has decided to play it this way, this far out from trade week.

When's the last time hawthorn committed to a player and walked away? genuinely curious, nothing coming to mind.

My guess would be Billy Longer, who ended up at StKilda

For the same reason I just outlined, plus the fallout that is currently happening in the supporter base.

Petroro would know that Essendon would also know that they cannot simply trade their captain. This needs to be something the supporter base either wants or have had time to get their head around.

At the very least Essendon now get to play it out with their own media, make it clear that they’re not going to be walked over and control their own narrative.

The finals are where it matters most, and our Midfield as stood up.

We would be favourites with Day in the team right now and we would be hot favourites with Zerrett in it. We don’t need 2 more A graders in the off season just 1 more would complete the puzzle. We can win flag this year beating the Cats with 2 A grade midfielders and possibly the Pies with only 1 A grade midfielder. Anyway Merrett for Pick 8, next year’s 1st and a fringe player is more than enough, probably overs.

Butters would be handsomely remunerated in a team he would be leading (either by title or by status) back up the ladder

Hawks fans think that Merrett relationship with Essendon being untenable is helping lower his trade value.

If Merrett and Essendon relationship can’t be fixed, and hawthorn don’t pony up in the trade, Merrett might prefer to play at another club rather than Essendon creating a bidding war for him.

I don’t think this is the case but I don’t see how all of sudden hawks are gonna get him cheap because of a couple of comments from players.
