Either side will only commit when a deal looks like it can be fashioned.I don't think they have either fwiw, not yet. Merrett may well meet with a couple of others still too, but Hawthorn looking like the most workable option so far.
But I guess if they do they'll expect to get it done then.
They will get more (than first round band 1 compo) if they do, or mutually agree to negotiate a trade.Sure, restricted. Port Adelaide won't match.
in that context it's odd that either Hawthorn or Petroro would have leaked this so early. It's a weird oneEither side will only commit when a deal looks like it can be fashioned.
If Petroro thinks a deal won’t happen he won’t direct Merrett to declare an intention to cross to Hawthorn.
And fwiw, despite all the public BS, I do believe both Essendon and Hawthorn have spoken to Petroro about what a trade would have to look like.

I don’t think it’s odd at all.in that context it's odd that either Hawthorn or Petroro would have leaked this so early. It's a weird one
And why not wait until he has an in principle agreement? Seems a bit risky for his client.I don’t think it’s odd at all.
He’s your captain. He’s contracted. The outcome that Merrett and his manager want only eventuates if you blow the relationship up.
I think it’s pretty clear why Petroro has decided to play it this way, this far out from trade week.
And why not wait until he has an in principle agreement? Seems a bit risky for his client.
And it still might not happen because hawthorn could walk away^^Because he felt it wouldnt happen without doing what he did.

If im a betting man, Butters will be a $2m man next year. Essendon losing Draper, Merret, Shiel, Laverde, potentially Ridley. That's $2m alone to a cap already brimming with room.Ultimately if Hawthorn can't deal with Essendon, Butters is a free agent after next season.
For a bloke that’s likely to play into his mid-late 30s he’s acting like a man in a panic but ¯\(ツ)/¯For sure. But if Merrett has said he desperately wants to play finals and knows it isnt happening at Essendon, I guess this is what you do.
Yeah but likeIf im a betting man, Butters will be a $2m man next year. Essendon losing Draper, Merret, Shiel, Laverde, potentially Ridley. That's $2m alone to a cap already brimming with room.
A top 10 pick a 2nd and a player (that's what most are saying) or a another late 1st isn't ponying up? seems there's a lot of tax on a contracted captain, maybe the Australian government are in charge of these trades! If you want Essendon’s contracted captain you’ll have to pony up

Jeremy Cameron was matched by the Giants. It was the first time it had happened. If a club matches a RFA he has to stay or go in the pre-season draft. It's never happened before. Butters is gone in 2027.
so as I said - or mutually agree to negotiate a trade. If a club matches a RFA he has to stay or go in the pre-season draft. It's never happened before. Butters is gone in 2027.

My guess would be Billy Longer, who ended up at StKildaWhen's the last time hawthorn committed to a player and walked away? genuinely curious, nothing coming to mind.
For the same reason I just outlined, plus the fallout that is currently happening in the supporter base. And why not wait until he has an in principle agreement? Seems a bit risky for his client.
We would be favourites with Day in the team right now and we would be hot favourites with Zerrett in it. We don’t need 2 more A graders in the off season just 1 more would complete the puzzle. We can win flag this year beating the Cats with 2 A grade midfielders and possibly the Pies with only 1 A grade midfielder. Anyway Merrett for Pick 8, next year’s 1st and a fringe player is more than enough, probably overs. The finals are where it matters most, and our Midfield as stood up.
what's happened to Merret? Why would Butters want to come there after what happened with Merrett?
