The talk in here of this club won’t do this player or that draft pick for Charlie, is insane.

Charlie is:
  • 2022 & 2023 Colman medalist, would have been 2024 if it wasn’t for an ankle injury at the end of the year.
  • Contracted until 2029
  • An icon for our junior supporters.
Any team, you want him. We’ve named our price, an elite player/ plus.

Don’t want to pay it, then **** off and we’ll get to business on other deals.
He's also missed large chunks of his career and had God knows how many surgeries on one knee, then had an Ankle injury that disrupted his 2024 and ultimately required surgery, then had more surgery in the 2025 off-season on that troubled knee.

He's had 2 fit seasons in the last 6 and, is 29 next season. The thing is, though, in those 2 seasons he won 2x Colemans, so the ceiling is as high as anyone in the league. But a 29-yr old with 2 fully fit seasons since they were 23 isn't exactly great.

I'm not someone saying we give him away for some future picks and a couple of B graders, but I can also completely see why no club has been exactly falling over themselves to satisfy us with a trade. Charlie is a blue-chip talent, but with a neon warning sign. That's not an easy deal to make for any party and is buyer beware to a point.

Lots of hubris is out there about how we should handle this (force him to stay and play him a full back in the VFL to fix his attitude, lol), but even from our perspective we should be considering what value we can get from a highly injury prone late 20s key forward. If he stays, he's a gamble to actually be regularly fit and getting the best out of himself, based off his history. Are we better off trying to get the best value for him now while he still has a premium? If he has another year or 2 disrupted pre-season surgery or another in-season lingering niggle, his value will be nowhere near where it is now.

And if he isn't traded and stinks it up next year the board needs to go! maybe not so simple.
Even if he had a poor year next year, he would still have massive trade value. At least as good as some of the ridiculous suggestions I’ve been reading on here.

Charlie Curnow’s team could really learn a thing or two from how Ben Williams managed the Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera situation earlier this year. Sure, Nas wanted to head back to Adelaide, but they played it very smart. They kept everything quiet until they knew a deal could actually be brokered. That way, he didn’t risk upsetting his own fan base if things fell through.

From a media strategy perspective, it was spot on. No leaks or no pressure-cooker headlines. The media had no clue what was going on because the camp kept it tight and professional. No agent theatrics, no public posturing - just clean, controlled messaging. That’s how you protect a player’s brand and keep the narrative in your hands.

You would have thought Robbie would have learnt from the Petracca mess last year.

Its mind boggling that his management has taken this approach, again!

This is not the Premier League. The days of players being 'disgruntled' with a club and then getting a move in contract are gone. I believe he will be kept to his contract, and the club is 'playing the game' to make it look good.

If I was Syd, GC there is no way I would be taking him as he is now a conditional player with leg issues, this is NOT Buddy Franklin!

When he stays, it's time for him to be locked in a room with GW and Vossy with no windows and told to grow the **** up and don't become that 'he was a wasted talent' footballer...

This has given me an idea which I shall submit to AFL House: "Crazy Trade Lucky Lottery"

The concept, which I expect to see approved by Andrew Dillon, sees clubs have the option of purchasing a 'lottery ticket' to win Charlie Curnow. The purchase price is a player agreed upon by the club and Carlton. If no agreement can be made, the club is not permitted to enter the lottery.

Carlton receives all the players entered into the lottery pool, but only one club 'wins' Curnow (which will be conducted by 'random' draw, and will see Gold Coast miraculously chosen).

Clubs will thus have to decide if they are willing to give up their nominated player for no return, for the chance to win Curnow.

Under this flawless system everybody wins, especially Carlton!

I think it’s all pretty simple, Charlie either gets us a “Kings Ransom” & a deal that’s a very obvious over pay (which I really don’t see happening - Geelong & Sydney do not over pay or have the picks to facilitate it. Gold Coast - maybe, if so they will pay up sufficiently)
Or Charlie stays, by round 10 Voss will be gone & with a decent game plan & structure he will be happy to be running around for us.

I don’t mind Charlie saying “I want out” I would be pretty bloody disappointed as a player in this team with the way we play.
Charlie & Harry should be close to unstoppable- yes they have had little time together due to injury but at no time have we looked to have a structure and style that allows them both to play to their full potential.

It hurts (& feels dirty) to say this - but if Mitchell & the hawks coaching staff had control of our team, how good do u think we would be?

We need more controlled rebound out of the defensive half not someone who just runs flat out until he gets into trouble and then blasts long.
100% it would actually compound our deficiencies, without a cohesive forward line & lead up CHF options it would just cause more turn overs & get smashed even harder on the rebound

Switch Blakey for Gulden and I’d be ok with any of those three scenarios.

I love COS but I think he’d be virtually untouchable unless he’s interested in leaving.

BH did at one stage show signs of homesickness so could still be something lingering beneath the surface there…. Plus, he was a big Carlton fan 😆

Flanders and a first for Charlie Curnow ?(the same Charlie Curnow with a four year contract and has won 2 of the last 3 Coleman Medals, our marquee player all over the membership packs, kids merch and pretty much every Carlton supporter under 12s favourite player?)

It’s quite simple this is a BIG football AND Business decision for this club.. this deal requires board approval with the following considerations to be front and centre

Football
List management
Membership
Finance
Culture (club and player)

This is not some free agent or pre agent we’re talking about here. This is an asset (yes asset) the club owns (yes owns) for four more years.

If he’s traded for Flanders and a first the board needs to go!! Simple as that.

People need to snap out of it!

This thinking is on the assumption that Charlie is 100% back on board if a trade doesn’t happen, and that his knee/body is going to hold up long term. If there’s any doubts around those two points we will consider a trade, it will be overs, but it’s not going to be a Gulden/Humphrey ++ type deal. Clubs are chasing him because they know he wants out, we’d only be trading him because it became untenable, that reduces our negotiating power. A best 18 player like Flanders and a top pick isn’t quite there but it won’t be far off the mark.

Yes Charlie would be a massive asset to a club like GC, but a checked out/disgruntled Charlie isn’t going to take Carlton back to where it should be.

To the clubs credit they have played it perfectly in the media, all dialogue has been strong in saying he is a required player and that we won’t be pushed over. But behind closed doors discussions may be different especially if relationships are burnt. Thankfully we haven’t completely botched it like the Bombers though.

Maybe he has been told that very thing during the season
