I see your point, but I think both GC and Hardwick will be under huge internal and external pressure to deliver a flag… or at the very least, make a deeper run into finals.

They know that while developing and keeping players with potential is important, the focus has to be on winning now, which is exactly why they brought in Dimma.

It’s one thing not to want to trade out your local home grown academy talent .. but they (with thanks to Charlie’s management and the recent links to Geelong/Collingwood) would realise to be pieces on the table to make certain deals happen, and I think Bailey fits the bill (being a Victorian and die hard Carlton fan who grew up idolising Patrick Cripps).

On top of that, landing a marquee player like Curnow would boost local interest and strengthen their profile in the competition.

Gold Coast also have a bottomless pit of picks & academy picks coming through. They shouldn't be scared to let one go. Over the years GWS gave up Treloar, Cameron, Shiel etc. and by rd6 the following year nobody even notices they're gone.

A certain GC player originally from Moe was spotted down Moe FNC watching the clubs netball premiership win. A lovely young lady he was with throughout the night has blabbed next morning that he is planning on approaching GC requesting a trade to Carlton with Curnows management for a move back home to Victoria for family reasons.
If true, however much we paid this young lady was very well spent.

I just can’t see GC dealing Humphrey when
A) He’s going to be a deadset gun, mid/forward freak
B) have Read, Walter, King and Charlie as tall forwards, you certainly wouldn’t play all 4 and there would be arguments you would only play 2

So, Charlie/pick 9 for Walter and Humphrey🙏

Read can potentially play defence

He was a Cats supporter but idolised Patrick Cripps per SEN

I’ll go from a different angle, Doc is giving his honest feedback on the club, if he is saying negative things, it’s because he believes them.

We had a disaster of a season and I with many others called for Voss to be sacked but the club is sticking with him, if we have a well respected, quality player just retiring and now saying negative things, why not consider they might be true?

Doc did leave Voss at Brisbane, so maybe like many here, he just doesn’t rate him as a coach and like us, thinks the club botched our list management th past few years.
Yes and no.

From Doch's perspective, he (and many of the senior guys) wanted to have another crack by tipping up on senior players. Makes sense from his perspective, he's out the door and doesn't have another opportunity. Doch's perspective wasn't a long term one and was obviously quite self interested.

If we'd gone that route and gone after Houston and a few other role players over the last 2 off seasons, I think l, we'd be in a precarious position now, with little success to show for the gamble, little in the way of young prospects coming through and an a bunch of aging stars past their prime.

I think the club hedged their bets, and in doing so signalled to the players like Doch that they didn't believe in them.

The same sort cap Brisbane had when they lost the prelim to go out and get Dunkley, McKenna and Gunston, the same one they’ve got, that has them about to sign 2 free agents at $1M each.

The same salary cap that Collingwood had when they won the GF to go and get Schulz, then a season later go out and get 2 players at $1.7M between them.

The same salary cap that Geelong have they lost the GF and went out and spent $1M on Cameron

The same salary cap that Hawthorn used at the end of last season, bringing in a FA and a big trade totalling about $1.8M

Most have slowly come to the realisation that we absolutely stuffed our cap, all these other clubs can improve the list year on year, yet we have no room, season after season.
None of those sides were as top heavy as we were in 2023 with 5 guys on roughly 1M

I think that's part of it. But a lot of this year's drop off was on individual players dropping off massively in form combined with some poor coaching. The youth was pretty much the one saving grace from the season.
I think the ones that were disappointed that we didn't go all in for a tilt were the ones who dropped their heads a bit started to play within themselves.
