I rewatched it last night. Did we lose focus during our week off or were the Hawks just intent on trying to floor us with their very best punches in that first quarter? After we 'worked them out' we were the better side but bloody hell, that first quarter!
Our start wasn't quite as bad on second look as it felt at the time. We were still beating them up around the ball.
We weren't great but there were 4 frees that were at least 50/50 deep in our forward line not paid (Neale arm chop on the lead, Neale pushed out in a marking contest, Danger taken high when trying to pick up the ball, HTB against Scrimshaw near the point post). Then Close and Miers panicked on very gettable chances at the end of the quarter. We could've easily had 4-5 goals at quarter time.
The main issues were 4-5 horrible turnovers (Mullin, Stewart, Mannagh and Smith come to mind) and our defence sagging back and getting beaten by little hit up leads.
Once we got more aggressive defensively and showed a bit more composure going forward we completely dominated.
