Ultimately, the votes panned out around where was predicted - it's just no one expected one bloke to repeatedly get 3 votes in multiple games where he didn't even crack 19 touches or a Coaches' vote.

The AFL can fix it. Will be huge news and a bunch of old people will be outraged, but it’s become a joke. In 5 years time, nobody will care that umpires used to vote for it. Just need to rip the bandaid off and get on with it.
