Butters is close with Buku and Buku was on the dogs table, so it's hard to read into anymore than just mates catching up at an event.

Yes, it all depends on who he was 'deep in conversation' with.

Deep in conversation with Bont and it's a completely different story.

They wouldnt have been able to.
Crows bid on Marra at pick 1, if we did not match their first round pick would have been used up on Marra.
Yes I clearly meant that if Dogs were uninterested in JUH, Crows wouldn't have bid on him. They were all in on Thilthorpe. They only bid on JUH to make us pay full price because we were never going to turn it down.

Are you really saying that we didn't rate Dunkley as a midfield contributor? He played midfield for most of career with us. He won our best and fairest in 2021 playing midfield.

We rated both players highly and didn't want to lose either.

He went from 4th or 5th most used centre bounce midfielder at the Dogs to the second most at the Lions. I think it was a major factor in him leaving

It was a tough one for us though. Libba and Dunkley are both fantastic in the same sort of role. Dunkley with his size was able to play other positions as he can be a marking threat, so makes sense from a team perspective for Libba to be predominantly used in centre bounces with Dunkley playing a dual role as half forward/midfield

Do Port get any real benefit if they trade Butters this year instead of holding out till next year when he’s a RFA?

1. If a player is gone in 12 months anyway, may as well open up more midfield minutes and development time for players who want to be there. Fresh start under a new coach and removes an awkward out of contract year with the Butters topic coming up every week.

2. Free up $900k ish to maybe chase another target this off-season or front end some contracts now and have a big chunk of $ to throw at someone next year.

3. Couple good SA kids around our pick (Marsh, Cumming, Schubert) who they could get in the door this year to help their rebuild, especially as they don't have their own pick this draft. Plus a future pick to help with their potential Cochrane bid next year.
