The Liberal Party - How long? - Part 2

Gisele Kapterian has finally conceded Bradfiled. That leaves Sussssan another vote down and likely to be toppled should a challenge come.
Glad they finally saw the sense to concede. The Libs’ problems are elemental and across the board, and with Labor's majority, nothing of consequence is going to be solved by gaining one measly seat in parliament.

It's the soap opera mentality. Who's gone behind whose back this week? Who was seen having an intense dinner conversation with who? Tune in to find out!

Effing shits me.
Even the analysis of whether a political party has had a good or bad week is essentially meaningless for the vast majority of the population

'Future Liberal leader or party disruptor? Andrew Hastie and the rise of the ‘MAGA right’
WA MP offers a divisive brand of politics that shuns net zero and migration and is anchored in flag-waving patriotism, faith and family.'

This guy in an unelectable Dutton mark 2.

Today in Liberal Party world. Has anyone asked Abbott or Credlin what they actually mean when they talk about western civilisation?

It’s all so desperate and pathetic.

Thought I don’t agree with them, xenophobic Europeans have some sort of point when they talk of their fear of their culture being overrun. They have two millennia of runs on the board at least. (For example, I’m struck by how many Greeks I know appear to carry round an inherited pride that they basically started Western civilisation, and are not averse to gently pulling it out as a debate winner from time to time LOL).

But white Australia, with its two centuries of settler society? I don’t know what we are, I don’t know what we’re going to be (I have high hopes we can offer the world something really unique) but one thing we’re not, is Western Civilisation. We’re a recently formed hybrid.

Through a blend of firstly indigenous culture, and then immigrant influence predominantly from Britain, and then from southern Europe, and the ancient cultures of the Middle East, and now China and India, we are forging something entirely new here, whether we’re trying to or not. And, whether Tony Abbott likes it or not. (Culture never stands still, even when left to its own devices.)

Such a pathetic dinosaur. There is so much about modern Australia’s potential that is incredibly exciting! And effing Crusader Abbott and Peta Cretin’s only instinct is for what they can put shit on.

If this is their great white hope, theLibs won't see Federal government again in my life time.

Has overdosed on the MAGA Christian Right Kool Aid, forgetting that the divisive politics of Charlie Kirk in the iand of Donald Trump may be in our tabloid news media headlines right now because of our lazy cut and paste media culture.

But every poll shows these views are totally abhorrent not just to the current electorate at large but to those who will decide who gets to govern our country in the 2030s and 40s.

Last approval rating of Trump in Australia I saw was 22%.

The country sent the message we don't want this maga shit here. Like true narcs, the LNP can't accept it and will triple down on culture wars and identity politics.

If they think leaning towards that again with this bible thumper is a good strat, then good luck to em, they'll need it.

"Faith, reason, inquiry, debate, persuasion" is not how I saw Kirk's (heavily edited, totally rigged) YouTube debates.

I only care about the Libs to the point that I hope they never achieve government again, but I did hope Sussan Ley could knock them back into shape, if only because, although I’d prefer the corrective pressure on Labor to come from the left, I do worry about an ongoing unopposed Labor government getting careless, lazy, arrogant, sloppy and corrupt.

But this unilateral reply she sent to the US Republicans letter - that is a really cheap act. Now, as far as I’m concerned, she can get ****ed. I don’t care if she gets rolled tomorrow.

Imagine thinking that in 2025, appealing to an ever dwindling population of 1960s/70s muscle car obsessed boomers is the way back to government.

The 'Steam Train Country' slogan on the number plate is the chef's kiss btw.

This is what makes me worry about a fascist takeover.

Much as I loathe right wingers, these people aren't complete idiots. They can read the numbers.

They know there is not some massive untapped voter bloc of 70s muscle car hoons sitting out there, that will deliver them back to government.

So why the hell are they doing it?

They are appealing to the narrow demographics of their party base not the broader electorate. My guess is that their aim is not about gaining government but gaining control of their party as a first step - getting the support to dump Ley in particular.

And then the fascist takeover?

Temu Tony Abbott.

Good luck with that.

A MAGA style right wing agenda will not work in Australia. And not just because of our unique compulsory voting 2PP system that our Constitutional forefathers thankfully graced us with.

But because of the fact that the vast majority of Australia's population is located in major cities. Why does that matter?

I'm glad you asked. And, coincidentally, pollster Kos Samaras has just posted this on twitter which explains things far better than I could:

I sure hope he's right! Good perspective, thanks.

He's added to it today following discussion around increasing the number of seats in Federal Parliament to reflect the rise in our population.

Makes the point that the last time the federal parliament was expanded was in 1984, when Australia’s population was just over 15 million. After that expansion, each federal electorate contained around 75,000 enrolled voters. But it also did something else: it shifted political power decisively from the regions to urban Australia.

Fast forward to today, and we are a far more urbanised nation. Even if parliament were expanded again, say by around 20 seats, the arithmetic still tells the same story. The average number of voters per seat would climb to about 105,000, but the new seats would almost all be created in our largest cities.

As he says, that reality comes with a blunt truth: no one gets to live in The Lodge without winning the capital cities - specifically Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. And that's where the Coalition/Libs are becoming increasingly irrelevant.
