That's just not true.

We need to cash in our chips before they're worth nothing. Getting #2 for Allan is a huge win. Ryan is doing f-all except for playing for free kicks.

We've already built a base of Harley, Hewitt, Ginbey, Hough. Around that, we have 15 young players who are hungry for a career. That base will build. I suspect Shanahan and maybe Reid will join that. Then we have pick #1 and #2 this year, and probably a top 5 pick for the next 2 years. The base will grow. The support around that will improve. Then we can bring in talented expats.

We didn't haver a choice other than a full rebuild. We didn't have a top 10 draft pick for 10 years. We didn't have any Daicos/Ashcroft type father sons. We didn't have a young Joel Selwood who had 12 years left. All our players got old, or shit, or old and shit.

We're playing the hand that we were dealt. The only major mistake we have made so far is coughing up #3 last year.
There were a lot of drafting mistakes made in that time and player mismanagement.

For example, we could have recruited Zac Bailey instead of Brander, traded Gaff at peak value etc., etc.

Some people have made a total mess of this club, it’s not simply the hand we were dealt.

That is too easy an answer. No club has fallen to pieces like we have.

Geelong, Collingwood, Sydney have been at the top for all the time since our last two premierships.

we can't have nice things.

I fully expect Mason Cox, Tanner Bruhn and Goldy named for us for rd1

2/3 right. Harley is amazing. He ain't no leader though.
You have no idea. You're seeing a bit of indiscipline and petulance from a 20 year old, and think he's not a leader. He'll get through that. He's having a bit of a tough time adjusting. This is the first time he's had a roadblock. This guy oozes leadership.

with the GF result I think Starcevich happens, past the test yesterday but would’ve been a huge worry for him and his manager at the time. He just has to cash in on a long term deal. We are so desperate that we will take the chance with a heavily front ended contract so the payout isn’t too large against the cap. The worry is the draft capital in a trade for a position of need that isn’t that great atm.

Neale imo is going for the 3 peat and if they get that he 100% will want to be a part of trying to get 4 in a row. Sadly if it was a chance I don’t think it’s happening. Lions could lose him and you wouldn’t even notice as their mids rotation is deep and all quality. They are set up for a long time and that’s on top of likely having the best trade/draft period. Oscar/Draper/Annable and what ever they get for Starcevich if he leaves when they would’ve got nothing if it was another club.

Have you listened to him talk? Not everyone is a leader. Cant have 23 captains. He might be in the far distant future but I doubt it. Don't get me wrong I'm stoked we have him and love watching him I just dont think he has the off field chops to be a WCE captain and his on field leadership has a long way to go too.

And thats part of the WC problem. We need football leaders not soft brown nosers the good boys club likes. O Allen is an example - he may have to harden up in his new home wherer he sists outside the top 10 leaders.

Calling absolute bullshit. Grade 1 syndesmosis he could have potentially played through, particularly with a jab. Grade 3 and he wouldn't have been able to run. At all, not a chance, no pressure leading off that foot, impossible.

From someone on Twitter re risk of getting Starcevich

"Players who have their careers cut short through being medically retired by the AFL have their contracts paid outside of the salary cap, it’s a non issue"

if this is true just get him

As long as that is still in place fine.

However he was subbed out again with concussion, even though the Lions said he was fine.

If we trade anything more than a single 3rd rounder pick for him we are idiots. He is one bad head knock away from being medically retired. That could happen in preseason training and he never plays a game for us.

Happy to bring him in for a 3rd round pick and thats it. Sad to say but he is damaged goods and you dont pay top dollar for damaged goods. Hope he is fine but lets be realistic West Coast. If they dont agree walk him to the PSD or he can stay there.

Too many mids of the same type or skill set is the problem with too many mids, just ask NM.

When building a midfield and those that support the midfield you need a balance.

A couple of in and under mids, a couple of balanced mids and a couple of outside types.

They then fight for spots and find the best mix and the other quality mids fill roles and rotations and the lesser types end up as role players in different positions.

Its not about just drafting mids its about putting all the skills and dynamic types in their best roles.

Currently we have 2 dynamic types in HR and Hewett, who will be different but their best is probably a balanced midfielder because of their skill set.

In and under grunt mid is Hall who is decent but limited in his skill set, he may end up better or he may end up being a role player. B Allan most likely will be in in and under mid who is more dynamic with his speed but has a good contested game.

Gross is more the Z Bailey type who may play more outside and HF who is tough and wins his own ball.
Come draft time we will have Banfield who is rapidly improving from a wing to maybe a rotation mid outside type.
K Evans looks all speed and class on the outside type who maybe also be that HF Z Bailey type.

This is my assessment of our midfield, which is pretty dire in terms of quality and numbers.

This is why you draft Sharp and Cumming with our best 2 picks, Sharp is the in and under grunt who has very good skills and Cumming is more the balanced type who can do both roles and is a dynamic athlete who kicks goals as well.
Bit like Hewett but maybe better??

What we do from there with this year and next will set our team up, the good part of being down the bottom is the high end picks we get and we will et another top 5 next year to finish off the midfielders we need to be elite.

So taking the best 2 mids in 2025 is the highest need in our list, we can then decide if we want to draft a KPD in Schubert with a top 10 pick or we draft a dynamic HB in Farrow with very good skills and decision making who may in time become a midfielder with a projection of a J Dawson type?
How is Duursma not in the top 2 mids in the draft?

Considered clear best player with the highest ceiling, plays outside to balanced mid.

He’s not HR levels of don’t trade the pick, but we would rightfully expect decent overs to part with it.

Assuming we take him we are very unlikely to get Sharp + Cumming as well (assuming we trade up) - we’ll take a tall as we have holes everywhere.

How many best 22 players have they lost to early retirement due to injury and in particular concussion?

Eagles

Venables
Sheppard
Naitanui
Sheed
McGovern

Luke Edwards another concussion retirement but boarderline best 23.

Recurring LTI issues

Oscar Allen
Yeo

Thats ugly reading.

The West Aussie has had multiple concussions during his career and is considering a lucrative long term contract from West Coast which would help to secure his future....
“I”m feeling good. My history isn’t great but I wasn’t going to think twice and not do that. I feel good now. It’s nothing serious,”

"Another head knock for Brandon Starcevich

In a sour blow on a magnificent day for Brisbane, free agent Brandon Starcevich suffered another serious head knock. Midway through the third quarter, the hard-as-nails defender copped an inadvertent shoulder from Ollie Dempsey in a scramble for the ball that sent Starcevich to the turf. He suffered three concussions in a 13-game span from the end of 2024 to round one this season. As he weighs up his free agency options, a fourth knock in 14 months could put a question mark over his decision and his future."

Seriously, if it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck.... It's a duck.

No matter how much he or Brisbane plays it down for him to secure that lucrative contract.

Absurd to be trading high draft collateral for this bloke, and just as silly loading him up on a big contract. One head knock away from pulling a McGovern/Venables/Sheppard and we simply cannot be taking the risk at this point.

I get it will likely be a priority pick we have to trade, but that's not just something to throw away either. Should be looking at prying others loose (Davies, Steele, Walter, Butler even) with that pick.
