2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th
AFL Draft: Wednesday, November 19th - Thursday, November 20th

If my captain had been about to leave but couldn't get a deal done I'd not respect him even slightly. The fans make no difference. Your teammates aren't going to respect you if you aren't even fully committed to staying.

I'd strip his position as VC if he's been looking around even. Players can't have it all their own way.
Until Wilkie says somethingvI will hold fire. Only thing said was the video the day the offer came out.
What has Wilkie done wrong?

Weird chat on trade radio about Phillipou not being commited to getting better when everything I hear is the exact opposite.
A lot of this stuff is probably Chinese whispers. Same with the Nas going home rumours.

Player or staff member makes mild, general comment. Gets exaggerated by the person who heard it. Gets exaggerated by the person they pass it on to. Gets blown up x1000 by the media when they get hold of it.

Doesn't mean nothing was said or anyone made anything up, but a bit of smoke doesn't always mean there's a big fire behind it.

People seem to be relating Wilkie's situation to their own lives a fair bit at the moment. AFL is a different world. Players sometimes need to wait for their turn to get looked after, and recognise the need for, and benefits of, team success in a sports comp with a limited salary cap. They also have a different sense of loyalty and mateship involved and a bigger public profile to consider than Nigel in data entry at AGL. I'm fairly confident so far that Wilks and Roh will only request a move if a club-approved trade looks likely. Which I don't think will happen, at least in the Wilkie situation.

if we hypothetically got involved in the curnow trade which netted us sdk but lost Marshall, would you be happy to deal Wilkie if we got a couple decent picks back?

I love Nas and there is no doubt his signing was huge for us but my concern is that there is too much hailing of him, especially by the club. He is singled out in speeches, constantly asked about in interviews and all over the club's socials. Specifically, my concerns are:
1. our other players will feel like they aren't getting any love;
2. it's a LOT of pressure on him and he will get tagged even more next year - he has shown that he can handle pressure well but he may decide after a couple years of it that it is too much for him; and
3. if he does leave in 2 years, we are setting ourselves up for bigger disappointment.

His signing brought in 17,000 new members and he won the B&F by a country mile.
He is the face of the STKFC.
You get 2 mill a season, expect the pressure.
If he leaves in 2 years it means we have as a club not reach finals and I would expect him.to leave.

if you look at the Geelong board you will see that they don't really rate SDK and have been very disappointed with his efforts and lack of development since 2022.

Did Tom Morris just report that people were unhappy with Phillipou this year and his commitment to the club?

Hasn’t he been known to train too hard and if anything over commit?
Yeah, thats not real... and I can say that from 17,000km away
Two options lead to this:

1. Tom Morris needs a story (slow trade news day)
2. An Adelaide pundit said it to him to lay the ground work for something, and Tom cant put two and two together (or doesn't care too).

From the Dogs board:

WB:
Out: Pick 10, Pick 28, JUH
In: Wilkie, Budarek

St Kilda:
In: Pick 7, Flanders
Out: Wilkie, F2, F3

GC:
In: Pick 10, Pick 28, JUH, F2, F3
Out: Pick 7, Flanders, Budarek

Someone should probably tell this clown we already have Pick 7 😂
I like it. Trading our own pick to ourselves means we can get the best value for it.

Love the line from Korne that's almost just about gratitude from Wilks

Edmund saying it's all about money from the Wilkie camp and Korne just referencing that we were the only club to pick him as a mature ager.

Where's the line though?

Should he stay loyal to the SANFL club that gave him the opportunity to play football and get drafted?

Should he only play for the junior club that picked him for his first game?

Yeah, I'd love him to stay, but if the Dogs are offering him a 50% pay increase (and we aren't prepared to match it) then I understand him at least wanting to think about it.

Fair enough, he does rely on his perceived ultra athleticism. Super intrigued to see what happens with both Marshall and Wilkie

There is no news. Trade period starts next Monday.

The only way the beast disappears is to ignore it.

If you look at the St. Kilda board, Marshall can't ruck to save himself, Windhager is a scrubby tagger who can't kick, Nas is an overrated turnover merchant and Wilkie might as well be John Wilkes Booth.

Anyone know roughly where Steele ranked in the B&F?

Also, can someone tell me how many years left on his current contract and when he signed it?

I’m pretty sure he just makes it up as he goes - who has ever heard anything but the complete opposite?

…this comes only a few minutes after saying Ro is disgruntled because he was blindsided by our talks with TDK, that he didn’t know we were chasing him, WTF??

It’s been public knowledge almost since TDKs last contract with the Blues that we were chasing him, the whole thing has played out in the media over a couple of years, but Ro didn’t know???

What utter garbage!!

Not sure if anyone else noticed, but 5 out of our top 10 from our B&F (including 2 out of the top 3) were picked up as rookies:

1st - Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera
2nd - Callum Wilkie (Rookie)
3rd - Jack Sinclair (Rookie)
4th - Max Hall (MSD - Rookie)
5th - Marcus Windhager
6th - Rowan Marshall (Rookie)
7th - Jack Higgins
8th - Cooper Sharman (MSD - Rookie)
9th - Mitch Owens
10th - Jack Macrae

Talk about finding diamonds in the rough consistently!

I get what Kane’s saying but this is a business - when you’ve got leverage you’ve got leverage, and Wilkie has a golden opportunity for a pay bump and contract extension that sees out his career. His manager knows it, the saints know it, he’d actually be dumb not to take advantage.

As far as the holdup, it makes sense to wait and see how much is left over in the warchest after all the other trades are done. Bonus points for bread crumbing the bulldogs
Exactly. If Flanders doesn't nominate us there will be more available for Wilkie.

Anyone actually know what's going on with any unsigned players, or if some of these guys might be heading to the new Sandy team?
Byrnes, Jones, Arie, Carroll have been told to wait - their futures are linked with how our trade period unfolds and whether we land our targets

Arie has a one-year offer from a rival club so expect him to leave as a DFA assuming we land JSOS and Aleer

Nah, John Wilkes Booth could hit a target !
