2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

The last 4 years have been pretty disastrous in terms of the results on field Joffa. I'm not going to sit here and pretend otherwise. 2020 (not captain) and 2021 (co-captain) were good.

Based on what I've seen watching the games, as it's all I can go off.

Not blaming anybody for it. You think differently - that is okay, but I am excited we are moving past this era and into 2026 with a fresh start as we've sorely needed it for years. Everybody at the club clearly knows it too.
As I said, we are in agreement that it is exciting we can move past him. I would like him to stay for two reasons.
1. Injuries and if he is such a club man he can check the ego and be depth,cI think he is a great choice and would still be ahead of the likes of Dow and Carroll. Think Jones will be gone.
2. Mentoring the kids like Boxshall, Garcia, Said, Armstrong etc in the twos would help development greatly.l in my view.
Also happy if he goes. If we have depth in Steele, Dow and Carroll in the VFL as experienced mids we are going ok. Not long ago that would have been our starting mid line up.

The players kept picking him as captain so maybe they would know a bit about his captaincy.
No leadership in the midfield? He was our only midfielder for about 5 years and in that time win AA twice.

I have zero issues with what the club has told him today. I support a club not a player. Also he is not the player he was, mainly through injury.
I am excited we have got to a point that we have the soldiers to maybe move past Steele, but to say he showed no leadership in the mids, is just abject bullshit.
And if you say he wasn't a good captain, blame the whole playing group who kept voting him in.
Agree. I'm on the trade Steele bandwagon but he doesn't deserve criticism for his leadership.

What language is that interviewer speaking???

I agree with all of this, the club handled the announcement today really well.

Could look completely different without the burden of being captain, maybe he gets his body right and can play a role for us, and help set the standards.

Steelo always looked like a reluctant captain from my 42cm screen, 8100 km from Melbourne. But i sense this - I reckon he'll be a happier player, and maybe a better player being free of it.

I do wonder who calls the shots game day nowadays, and especially ever since RTB came back, but we will see pretty soon enough what unfolds. What are your guesses? A half-forward?
Steele was our best player during a period with an ordinary list and coaching. Geary bless him was our captain because there was no one else :)

I think Steele was a reluctant captain chosen from a pretty bare cupboard. I think it's great he took it on, but I don't think we was a great captain. I am thankful for his service in the role, however I'm still pleased we are finally moving past him, but my issue is with the players selecting the captain! If we're going down that path then it should be the same strategy as parenting a toddler - you let them choose, but from a selection of 3 options that you picked for them...........

They will vote for their next captain Saddam Hussein style. Just Cal Wilkie's name on the ballot.

just caught up"again"surprised i didnt read it here, but did anyone else hear pickering in his stint on trade radio, say words to the effect that he has it on good authority that flanders to saints is a done deal?
Edmund said essentially the same this morning.

When was the last time we told a player to explore their options due to lack of guaranteed midfield minutes 🤔
Think one of Collingwood, Melbourne, Essendon or Eagles will come in for Steele. Offering him a hike on the salary (We front loaded contract) and minutes in the midfield.
