Recommitted Rowan Marshall [OOC 2027] - Requested Trade to Geelong, didn't get done

In any case, the fact that Marshall has publicly announced it means that both clubs are pretty much aligned on the trade. Or at least, at the "haggling over pennies" stage.
Didn’t happen last year and this has been talked about for months.

Marshall reportedly asking for a trade changes nothing, sos Gibbs ring any bells ?.

Can’t wait to see how this plays out! Imo we should not trade under any circumstances and Ross has said as much on live TV.

Reckon P25 + P16-20 would be about near the line for stk to move.

I still wouldn’t do that personally and certainly don’t want a passenger like Close thrown in. Don’t need SdK now but he would’ve been okay as part of it.

Okay we can now cross the "You need to pay up big because he's the final missing piece of your premiership puzzle" off the Bigfooty Trade Board bingo card..
It’s not about paying up big it’s about paying a fair price for a contracted player when you’re in clear need.

I didn’t make up the ages of some of your stars nor overstate the clubs position. St Kilda didn’t ask for this, I know for a fact you’ve been talking to Marshall for months. If you accept you pay a premium to extract contracted required players then yes you need to satisfy a reasonable ask otherwise we keep him. This is been driven by Geelong and Marshall not st Kilda.

Do you question we’re a better side with SDK and Marshall working in tandem ?.

Given the above I’d have thought Geelong would be happy enough to meet our needs. Anyway I guess we’ll see, I really think this is one of the rare hold situations. St Kilda have little need or motivation to move him, better with him, front loaded contract, no huge ongoing commitment.

Marshall wanted to move last year so this was always likely and hope a deal can be done that benefits both sides. For the Cats he is a definite upgrade on Stanley but is no Max Gawn and is pretty banged up. Good around the ground but routinely flogged in hit outs and HO to advantage, reflective of St.Kilda’s generally poor clearance stats. Gawn, Xerri, Meek and the other top line rucks took him to the cleaners. Would prefer he stays as I think he could be a very good CHF and 2nd ruck but feel sure he will be wearing the hoops next year. As happens with contracted players the Cats will probably have to pay overs if they want him. What gets it done? Genuine question - would the Cats entertain a swap with SDK or is that delusional? St.Kilda's first choice full back (Howard) is always injured and looks to be cooked. Desperatley need a giant defender to play on the giant forwards.

I think the thing that meets saints needs is getting rid of Marshall for an ok pick. It would take a lot to convince me that the saints internally actually believe Marshall as a forward benefits them.

To begin with TDK isn’t being paid $1.8m a year. But notwithstanding the $$, he was a wanted player at the Blues.

In terms of Silvagni, again, the $$ probably don’t make sense, but I’m sure as a player, he is probably your 2nd best key defender in 2025.

Next minute, Curnow leaves and you’ll be changing (if you haven’t already) your view on whether he is any good.
We just received band 1 (pick 9) for TDK - Thankyou SOS :).

19 for JSOS is amazing (!) for a solid backman who plays 1/2 a season on average.

The club was happy to take the compensation & run given we have 2 top-10 fathers sons this/next year.

Curnow leaves only if we let him leave - 4 years to run on his contract. If he does it will be our our terms & to our benefit.

Be honest - Marshall leaving must make the TDK acquisition seem a little daft?

It’s not about huffing or puffing mate we will give Geelong the trade currency requirement they either choose to meet it or not we won’t be fussed if they choose not to will happily keep rowan for another two years

No problems then if you wish to but the other poster is still correct about what we will offer.

If Flanders nominates St Kilda, this is the easiest trade of all time.

Marshall for 17.
17 for Flanders.
Suns use 17 + extras for Petracca.

Everyone’s happy.
Melbourne aren't reading petracca without 6 being involved.

I think you’d be surprised by the Ryder/Marshall combination.

It worked really well, we played finals in Ryder’s first year. St Kilda would be happy to have the same type of split this year, very little if any motivation to move him.

Brisbane did just win a flag with two rucks, neither as good as Marshall or TDK and Marshall clearly a better forward than both.

We also have the extra number on the bench now which I think will see more clubs go with two rucks

I think we'd be a better team with both in the side, but also see the benefit of trading him for the right price.

That being said,I think it's very unlikely he will be with us next year. Geelong want him and Saints will be forthcoming in a trade.

I think we will see a fair deal done. Either this year's first and a second or next year's first would be my pick.

Did it though? There were a lot of sides. That basically put in a Mulligan that year and there were 20 other players on the team. TDK has been shown to be consistently ineffective when sharing the role too.

All the taking points about keeping him just seem like baseless positioning to me

As he is contracted the same scenario for Curnow applies – if leaves if we it will be our terms & to our benefit. No doubt he is good player but is 30 and banged up. More a ruck rover than pure ruckman so TDK is a definite upgrade in that respect. Would like to keep him but we have great young prospect in Dodson being developed so if we can do a deal that works for us I reckon we get it done. It’s not like losing NAS or Wilkie.

Yes NAS will be a tough one to lose in a couple of years.

TDK isn’t a good tap ruckman, his strength is trying to win the ball out of the ruck - but he invariably hack kicks it forward.

He’s more a ruck roving type also, interestingly.

He also doesn’t kick many goals or mark the ball much around the ground.

Given the $’s you’d hope he can develop quickly!

Geelong will find a way to get Marshal done.

I'd say it's more accurate to say they won despite their rucks

Consider this, you’ve just been smashed by a team who will improve next season with Allen and Draper plus the usual academy picks.

You have Dangerfield 35, Blicavs 34, Cameron 32, Stewart 32, Stanley 34 who are nearing the end of great careers. Are you going to load up or just shrug and fade away ?.

Worple is a good get but a lot more needs to be done, Marshall is exactly what Geelong needs. This years, next years who cares if you’re a chance to pinch another flag before these guys retire you just pay up and move on imo.
It matters which year's first because there are trade targets coming into Free Agency at the end of 2026.

Geelong may win the flag in 2026, or could miss finals. The chance to snare a quality Free Agent is immaterial to season 2026's objectives and eventual outcomes.

You're framing this as 2026 being Geelong's last chance for success before the proverbial cliff is reached. I've heard that one before.

Marshall can be an effective forward (despite some of his set shots) and Ryder's elite tap work certainly made a difference by giving our pretty crap midfield a chance. I think the two ruck prospect is less important now that our mid setup is more proactive but I still doubt we settle for just an okay pick.

Probably would have won by a lot more if they had TDK and Marshall instead of those two also.

I think most would agree we are more likely to see dual rucks with the extra on the bench.

Anyway, I'm not suggesting Marshall will be here next year. I think we all know he most likely won't be. But I also think we'd be a better side with both playing so it's not the end of the world if Cats try to get him for unders and he stays.

A fair trade will be done though.

Sure. Keep a disgruntled player and let him rot in the VFL. Or take an R1 pick for a 30-year-old surplus to requirements player. I think even SOS isn't pig-headed enough to know what is ultimately in St.Kilda's best interests.

Ruck rules changes to encourage jumping are good for TDK and bad for Marshall.
Finally someone who understands why the Saints have made a change and value TDK so highly.
The Pres said in an interview this week it averages out at $1.65M, not as high as media suggests. (Suprisingly hey?😂)

Cats traded Steven King to the Saints for pick 90. At the time he was 28, a premiership player, 2 time best and fairest and an all Australian. A late 1st rounder seems very reasonable
