Recommitted Rowan Marshall [OOC 2027] - Requested Trade to Geelong, didn't get done

I'm sure later picks can be used if Mackie is desperate to have them.

Not sure comical is the word is used. But as I said, I'll be very surprised if this year's first is enough, happy to come back and discuss once the trade is done

Mackie is starting at 1 x 1st round pick this year, that doesn’t mean it’ll be the end point it’s just a starting point.
It’ll be probably a first and next years second round pick for Marshall and a third this year.

Both get something out of it. Cats get help now while also still having picks for this draft for Hunter Holmes and Jesse Mellor. Saints can stay in the first round this year and get an extra pick in next year’s draft. If they use them in other trades or not idk but it’s not a bad deal at all.
Everyone walks away happy.

Anyone suggesting a 30 year old Ruck is worth 2 firsts is unserious.

You do realise this is the second time Rowan has asked out…
You planning on sitting him in the VFL for those two years? 😂
In any case, the fact that Marshall has publicly announced it means that both clubs are pretty much aligned on the trade. Or at least, at the "haggling over pennies" stage.

I'm reading he's been knocked back once before after a request, but requesting indicates clubs are aligned.

We don’t immediately need a ruckman we won our Qualifying and Prelim Final playing with Blicavs and SDK 😂
They’ll be fine, they’d run with Blics in the Ruck or Blics backing up to Stanley again.

any male over 40 would know why Danger and Blicav's played much better in finals after a week off than they did playing 2 weeks in a row.

I'm not denigrating making it to the grand final with a 'squad mentality' but good luck taking the above strategy forward.

Last year he didn’t publicly ask out, he just enquired about leaving and Saints said no.
Publicly requesting means he and the Cats believe it’s happening and I imagine Saints are on the same page.

He’s not keen to play as a backup ruck or a makeshift forward.
That messaging has been consistent.

I haven't seen anyone suggest that but if they have then I agree, they are wrong.

I think it will be this year's first and a future second. If we have to give up a third rounder out of this draft than I won't be unhappy about it though.

He doesn’t want to be there? 😂
Sounds like smart management to keep someone who doesn’t want to be there around after paying his replacement twice his salary

He doesn’t publicly request a trade if he wants to hang around mate.
That’s fine his requested a trade no one at our club has any issues whatsoever with rowan been a great a servant , I’m sure we have told him we will do what we can to make it happen but he would also understand that his under contract and it’s up to Geelong to come up with a sufficient offer if not we will happily keep him with no hard feelings at all

I think the thing that meets saints needs is getting rid of Marshall for an ok pick. It would take a lot to convince me that the saints internally actually believe Marshall as a forward benefits them.
It wouldn't take that much, just watch videos of our forward line with Owens and Max Heath playing key posts.

If Flanders nominates St Kilda, this is the easiest trade of all time.

Marshall for 17.
17 for Flanders.
Suns use 17 + extras for Petracca.

Everyone’s happy.
The suns will 100% not take 17 for Flanders, we have already stated we are prepared to trade pick 7 for him we don’t actually need Geelongs pick to get any trades done

So use our pick to get back in the draft then, as it seems you’ll be trading a combination of 2025 and 2026 picks for Flanders, Aleer and Ryan.

Either way; the Marshall deal will get done.

It matters which year's first because there are trade targets coming into Free Agency at the end of 2026.

Geelong may win the flag in 2026, or could miss finals. The chance to snare a quality Free Agent is immaterial to season 2026's objectives and eventual outcomes.

You're framing this as 2026 being Geelong's last chance for success before the proverbial cliff is reached. I've heard that one before.

Yeah I love how we keep getting told by oppo fans every year that “this is the last chance at it”

Majority of our side played their first or second Finals series this year, 10 blokes played their first Grand Final.
The core majority of the best 23 is in the 23-27 age range, not the 30+
Most of the blokes who played key roles in 2022 GF have either retired or are not the focal point of the side anymore.
Much more reliance on younger blokes, our best players in the 2025 Grand Final were ages 20, 21, 22 and 23

That’s about right. It’s more than Cats want to give, it won’t be as much as Saints want, both sides in the middle.
Spot on mate

When it comes to Marshall’s contract being estimated at an average 800k to 900k a season, and also that it’s been front loaded. And Cats fans are adamant it gets done for this years, soon to be pick 19+, offer. How many pick places does the trade value shift for each 100k per season saved by said forwarded loaded contract?

That’s fair enough from a Geelong perspective.

However you can’t expect us to give Marshall away and we have our own needs. I’m actually hoping we keep Marshall, what you saw this year is him playing injured off little preparation. He had a fractured pelvis so expect a better version in 2026 wherever he plays.

You guys are in a bind, do you load up like collingwood and double down or do you try and hedge your bets. I’d double down simply because the older guys are so good that replacing them is impossible.

Interesting times when you throw in Tassie.

Any team that comes from a GF and turns down a key player upgradefor a pick in the 30s deserves to crash and finish in the bottom 8 while ruckman sit on Mark Blicavs head as they put their crotch in his face with the new rules

Didn't want to pay his salary.

That's fine but Scott and Mackie have shown what value they (dont) place on rucks with their previous trades and weekly selections. They've also shown they fight to hang onto future 1sts (in 2022 they basically moved every other pick of value and pushed Stephens out to not have to trade a future 1st for Henry, and with smith they wouldn't budge either). I would be staggered if factoring that in they offered a future 1st for a ruck who will be 30 (as good as he is). From there its up to st kilda whether they accept picks this year (and use them for other deals) or try to hold him and play 2 rucks. But I doubt we will offer more (than say our 1st and 2nd this year, or current 1st and future 2nd etc).
