2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th

He didn't standout for Sandy in the backline for mine.
But the coaches have said that they are happy with his development back there.
But l agree,
he has sticky hands.
And they played him in one game forward for Sandy & he looked comfortable there.
With all of the incoming, two of Tauru, Hammer and Barrett have to go forward. I know we like flexibility. But with Marshall going, all of Aleer, Tauru, Wilkie, Hammer, SOS and Barrett cant all play back. Leaves only King up forward.

Unless Keeler or Dodson has the pre-season of a lifetime (which would also solve our second ruck issue), one of Tauru or Hammer has to play forward in the ones (alongside King), and one of Tauru / Barrett plays as a key forward in the seconds (alongside Keeler / Dodson).

Personally I like Hammer back and Tauru forward. But thats just me

*Just had a look at the Doggies board. They are discussing Wade Derkson vs Jacob Blight for KPD options. Even at our lowest, not sure we have been there. That clubs refusal to send Naughton back is gonna cost them another shot at a flag

Hello! I come in peace , wanted to say Row Marshall is an unbelievable player and feel very lucky his picked us as his home. Seems like a great and humble guy too, will be lucky to have him at our club.
Cheers bud, hope he's the missing piece your team is looking for. Hope you understand what you're looking at and are willing to pay accordingly, Geelong have usually been decent and professional in the few trades between us, no reason for it not to continue.

I remember that feeling once before, when BJ took a mark...
One of the most incredible clutch moments in the history of the game, and Toyota immortalises a smother instead. The winners write history, as they say.

Except one afternoon / evening when they didn't even turn up to the Wangaratta Oval for a scheduled pre season game against the saints. It was stormy weather. They could not land at the airport.
My young children and I had driven all the way up there to see the game. No care for the expectant young fans?
They could have driven there or taken a bus.

Too affected by peptides?
What an absolutely arrogant team!
An absolute disgrace.🤔
I remember that. Not that long ago

Marshall thread & geelong fans think maybe George Stevens may be a player that is offered up with a pick
But mostly think it will be picks
R1 this year & F3 scenario
George Stevens.

No thanks.

We need players who can run. He is slow and stodgy. One paced. Not particularly athletic.

Minimum first rounder for Marshall.

I see Steele very differently to others on here. Makes zero sense to me to part with anything less than a pick in the 20s
I think the fact we have publicly come out and said we’ve told Jack he can pursue other opportunities shows we are willing to accept something a lot worse than a pick in the 20s. Not something the club would do if they wanted top dollar for him IMO.

Without knowing the ins and outs, it would be appear he still has a good portion owing on his contract and the club sees that money as better spent elsewhere. As such, I’d expect (if he goes) it will be for a token pick in the 40s or 50s.

Would love to be wrong, but if I was betting, that’s what my money would be on.

Something I've been thinking about over the past couple of days is the front loading of contracts.

Its widely accepted that front loading is a big part of the reason we have a huge warchest.

Why is it that numerous sources - both media and connected posters - are discussing getting Steele and Marshall's salary off our books?

I suppose noone really knows the machinations of our salary cap, but I was under the impression these two have had the majority of their contracts paid already.
the only way our salary cap situation makes sense is that we brought forward portions of multiple player contracts. Not just Steele and Marshall. Most logical way would be to pay forward say 20 ;(or less) players 100k in 2025, and reduce there salary in 2026 by 100k.

If the club was smart they would have started a negotiation of 100k more in 2025 but we will pay you 105k less in 2026. (Due to inflation).

By my calculations if contracts are not front loaded we are up for 20m in salary expenses in 2026. The salary cap is only 18.3m next year.

Besides we were only reported to be at 83% of the total salary cap in 2025 - and we must spend 95%minimum. So we would have brought forward at least 2m in salary last year.

Then there is another rule which we have which may give us the ability to pay 105% of the salary cap.

Is Flanders the mystery mid?

I know he’s been talked about for awhile.

When the mystery mid was first trotted out was Ned known to be leaving?

no it was clearly stated that it wasnt flanders or cmac or anyone we were musing about at the time

The only day that I ever went there kelvin templeton kicked 16 ****ing goals against us.

That is reason to hate them for an eternity!!
i went out there a few times, geez they talk about collingwood fans being toothless, that mob has all kind of deformaties

most memorable was spuds last game, went out with my collingwood supporting mate,at 27 i felt i was a bit old to run out on the ground, but my 25yo collingwood mate ran out there to be part of it

Would be the worst strategy ever if having a huge war chest and recruiting all the players to our club, only to pawn off Steele and Marshall for cents in the dollar.
Marshall, agreed.

But Steele, if we said he can explore other options, then it is our responsibility to let him go for whatever gets offered. We cant push back on what is received when we are the ones who started the trade.
