2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Honestly think I've got about 40 players I'd have ahead of Dow.

Surely re-signing was a cultural move rather than a football move.

He’s an inside extractor and has some toe. If any of our mids go down he’s perfect cover. If fit he might actually push out an aging Macrae or a tiring Garcia etc if needed. He form at the end of 2024 was actually good

100% this.

There are going to be some disappointed fans if they think a flag or prelim is on the cards next season.

There is missing the finals and then there is not even being close to the finals - if you get me.

I will be disappointed if we miss finals but if we just fall short with another 23 games into the 22 and younger core, it's alright.

I would start to get really concerned if we missed again in 2027 - that would be a problem.
No soft cop outs for me. I fully expect to play finals next year. If we want to be taken seriously then it’s time to be serious. Do the work. Believe. Get it done.

If we have said to Steele, look mate it’s you or Macrae. We think a number of these kids are ready for spots and based off your 2025 you are probably next man out, you are our ex skipper. You can stay and fight for a spot that your not guaranteed or we are happy for you to look for moves

Then it makes little sense for us to take a 3rd or 4th rounder and wave him good bye.

It’s not like we have said, we need your money off the books. We are saying a respectful, you are going to have to win a spot to an ageing champ.

Again, just can’t see why we would send him packing for nothing in a shit draft.
It also makes little sense to tell someone to go look around because we cant guarantee you play next year and then when they do say, sorry but we want more for you in a trade.

Cant have it both ways.

Yeah finals is a must.

When your core group start getting to 22-24 it's time for them to start being able to turn potential to results.

TDK and JSOS both saying Paddy Dow is the player they’re most looking forward to playing alongside

Maybe a slight part of the reason why we re-signed him
Interesting and promising.
They would know what he's capable of.
Deserves some luck this year, for sure. Glad we gave him an extension.

This may be obvious to some but just putting it out here

Friend got into conversation with Hammer last night, Caminiti said the plan is for him to go back forward next year.
'Back forward'? Is that a new position?
Seriously though, I think his best position is forward. With all the defenders we're getting he'll be needed more up front.

Hey, was on 17 pages last time I checked in, well done again, keep it going. So sick and tired of the same farking sides in the farking finals.
It actually gives hope to other clubs like North.

You've got to be in it to win it. And you're in it 👍

More than happy to have steele playing in the 2s and developing the younger mids.

Honestly, having Steele as a break glass type player if any of Macrae or Windy gets injured is great depth and better than a 3rd rounder we would receive in return if he did leave.

We've been open, honest and respectful allowing him to choose his future.

I hope he backs himself in and has a fairytale finish like swallow but in a grand final.
If Steele is playing reserves next year then our midfield must be in good shape. Surely that's a good thing.

Exactly this.

If we didn’t want him out, it would have been done in private and kept that way. The fact we publicly came out and made a statement on it, genuinely not sure how people could come to a different conclusion.
I thought the point of the statement was to give him the option of looking around. Having that be public knowledge would protect him from any backlash like we have seen with captains at other clubs this year

I said a pick in the 20s.

There has to be some value for Steele. There isn’t any value in us sending him packing for pick 40/50

Lyon may well speak fondly of plenty of our kids, but the way he talks about Paddy Dow, its like the bloke is his son!

He is clearly a super likeable guy

Surely you know I’m a roller coaster by now. No one more positive if things are going well but absolute storm cloud when shit is going badly. I’d be pretty hypocritical too, pretty much done everything I’ve been demanding for years. I’m invested because I had the same vision. Also I’m in Port Douglas so footy things can’t ruin my day up here.
Go and have a beer, watch the cane toad races and relax......

If Marshall leaves, and Caminiti goes forward a forward line of the following looks likely:

Ryan King Owens

Higgins Caminiti Sharman

You've also got Philippou, Hall, Hill, Wood and Wilson rotating through the flanks, wings and midfield, Tauru and JSOS as potential swing men, and Henry, Keeler and Collard putting pressure on in the reserves. That's a pretty good mix of you ask me, particularly if we can get a full strength King.

Hard to pay a bloke 800k to play VFL while we've just spent a shit load bringing others in unfortunately

We are clearly not the best team in the AFL all of a sudden. But I would argue our list may possibly be one of the hardest for a depth player to break into next year.

If I was someone like Butler or even Clark, my manager would definitely be on the phone to other clubs.

Yep and not something they would have taken lightly. The media release would’ve been agreed to by the club and Jack likely to drum up some interest which means Jack is comfortable with a move if it can be done. I’d say it’s his preference based on the club advising him he’s no longer guaranteed a starting spot. Out of respect for Jack I very much doubt we would put up any barriers for him to leave. If he goes it’ll be a late pick. As I said yesterday it’s a salary dump that’s as clear as day.

My lord his hands are clean. More impressive when you consider the greasy conditions up in QLD most of the year
I haven’t seen a lot of him but I watching this package reminds me of Brad Crouch. Clean with quick hands. And very much handball first but maybes it’s the role he’s playing. That an accurate comparison?

To be fair, we are sitting in the exact same position that the Dogs were last year with Macrae. Overpaying a bloke to either not play or play out of position.

For all of our justified laughter at the Dogs, their choice to bring in an actual mid forward in Kennedy over Macrae was a really good piece of work last year.

Unfortunately for Steele, the guy brought in to finally support him has potentially sealed his fate. Whatever happens to him, I hope he's happy and does well - seems like a nice guy who never really asked for the captaincy or scrutiny.

better a being accountable but not better for team balance, given Silvagni is in. And given we are a tall backline now, Aleer ads some mobility aswell as intercepting.
He maybe mobile, so was Mat Allison, Aleer has no idea about positioning and where he should be on the ground, lm not convinced he is the answer

I would hope there is another reason we re-signed him and not because he is best mates

Is Hastie the forgotten man?
Doesn’t get mentioned much.
Where do we see his best position?
Looks like a player to me.
Like Hastie , personally see him as more of a run and dash off half back type who is also good in the air.

With NAS in ball , Hastie should be targeting a half back role .
