Doesn't he have 1 year left? I'd imagine they will just give him 2 years (so extend by 1) and up the pay by 100k so it evens out to 500k per year, along with a shitload of behaviour and performance clauses.
Sure which is essentially a totally different contract anyway.

I can’t see why JUH would extend his deal for an extra $100k, especially if it comes with onerous clauses. He stands to earn far more in the long run if he can prove he’s a productive player from 2027 onwards.

In any case, he’ll continue to be paid under his current contract. So as long as he provides evidence that he’s unfit to play (for example, a GP certificate), he’ll be treated the same as any player with a physical injury or illness. All the club can really do is try to get him on a return-to-play/training plan.

The only scenario where the club could try to withhold payment is if the Club Doctor formally determines he’s not ill. But no club in its right mind would invite the backlash that comes from disputing a mental health diagnosis, especially for a player on an expiring deal.

JUH doesn't hold the cards though. He will have to either take what's on offer or his career is over. New contracts very often include new terms, so there is nothing stopping the Suns offering the suggested 2 years working out at 500k per year.

The club doctor has nothing to do with it anymore, it's all being managed by the AFL. They could very well step in and say he's not ready for AFL football again due to his mental state. Works both ways.

The guy holds no cards at all. He is the one tanking his career. If he wants to keep playing footy at the highest level he will take whatever he can get. I'm surprised any club is even considering him.

Especially at GC. It'll be a trainwreck.

Yes, new contracts can include new terms. But clubs can't contract out of the CBA or Fair Work laws.

Do nothing, get paid $900k in 2026.

Do something, get paid $1 million across 2026 and 2027.

He is not extending for a year to guarantee an extra $100k. That's a rookie wage. Country footballers earn more than that!

Do nothing, get paid $900k in 2026 - Career over.

He has one chance to continue his career, he doesn't hold the cards to how that looks.

Wouldn't surprise me if we drafted either Paddy Cross or Mitch Hardie.
To be clear, Cross is more in the age range of 23-27Y-O's profile that we are deficient in.

Well he has been in the system long enough to know and understand what is required to be a professional athelete. It seems that he is just a non-hacker.

Exactly. He's young. If he turns it all around he could make serious bank and set himself up for the rest of his life. Or piss it all away and end up with nothing.

Think you will find there are also requirements to seek treatment and rehabilitate if not fit to play. Hard to see hitting clubs and getting on the piss until early hours of the morning coming under any psychiatric advice. If he has refused to stick to a plan to try and get him back to football he is not meeting his contractual obligations, no different to a player with an ACL smashing some pills and spending 8 hours on a night club floor instead of rehabbing.

I know see what that mean by a trash draft. I think Xavier Lindsay would go about 4th in this draft.

Sullivan Robey looks like a Ryan Burton clone. He got his kick smothered about 8 times in the highlights package that I watched.

Josh lindsay- Plays like Karl Amon.

Oliver Greeves - best skills in the draft. but looks super slow.

Dyson Sharp - not sure he has a point of differnce

Xavier Taylor - looks like a real goer- Darcy Wilmot vibes. Role player vibes too though.

Lachy Dovaston - Rated at 18 by Cal Twomey. Plays will real energy though.

Sam Cumming - no star factor. But has a crack. Avg skills. Maybe like a Zac Jones type.

Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves: Maybe like a Blake Acres type.

Jacob Farrow: Josh Ward clone. mosto of his highlights are just kicks in and switching play.

Archie Ludowyke: Looks a bit of a Cadman clone.

What The Hell Wtf GIF

been watching a few vids of the draft kids lately and i liked these three. we could do with all three to be honest, but in particular Grlj looks like someone i think we'd be interested in to help us to bounce out of that back half and could also inject speed into our midfield.
How would you even pronounce that? I can only imagine something like Girly, which seems a problematic way to commence an AFL career.

No doubt his mental health diagnosis takes in high comorbidity risks, hence the tolerance to date, but there must be a point where he would have to demonstrate effort at recovery.

Pure conjecture.

If he wants a career beyond 2026, the smart play is to not extend his deal and bet on himself.

Missing the point - Gold Coast might not want to pay him 900k at such a high risk so he might not get that opportunity. The whole point is he doesn't have the power, GC will offer him what works for them and he takes it and tries to turn things around, or leaves it and his career is over.

Bulldogs will likely contribute a fair chunk of his salary to see the back of him.

He won't cost the Suns anywhere close to 900k and will be cheap in terms of trade capital. They would only be tethered to him for 12 months if it doesn't work out. Extending him for more years would be malfeasance by the list manager.
