2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th

We are demanding Geelong pay overs for a contacted Marshall but we wonder why we are paying overs for a contracted Flanders in a compromised draft?

Can’t have it both ways.

Same principle.

The golden rule for trading a contracted player who is required. The owning club receives overs and the bidding club pays overs.

It will happen for Marshall as it will for Flanders.
It could also be strategic.

The eagles in their interview spoke about wanting to trade up. They could easily be annoying to deal with re Ryan - if we don’t have the pick it just composes minds to the task at hand.

Higgins came to the Saints for midfield time. I remember him saying that when he was traded. He's got a lot fitter under Ross, and I'm guessing that Ross has thrown him the challenge - get fit enough to play mid and I'll give you a crack.
I think Higo has suffered from a lack of small forward options. He's probably still our most creative offensive mid option if given the chance so l can see him further up the ground if we run with Ryan, Lance, Mitch etc..

- Steele to Essendon looks like it will be spoken about a fair bit especially if Hawthorn get Merrett.

I'm not actually convinced that CMac would get a game in our best 23. Those convinced on him may well want him to be involved in a 3 club trade.

Personal opinion is that I don't think he'd be noticed if he wasn't a former top 10 pick/NGA eligible.

- Roma, SDK is a better option than a pick in the 20s in this draft. Two firsts or SDK would be my only options.

- Aleer, F3 and a swap of F2's? Or Steele? Giants do have a couple of early 30s picks which one could be handy for Fincher/Ryan. If we got SDK I'd walk away from the Aleer deal.

- Ryan, sounds like Eagles will play hardball. Not sure what to think to be honest. Ive tried to convince myself Ryan will be a good pick up but nothing about this deal seems easy.

I've never heard Gubby speak, either he's been spending too much time in Vegas or in meetings with TT and JUH or he's having a stroke.

Kidding, obviously, I think if you pay attention to what he said and not how he said it - it was a great interview.
That last suggestion he made about having a few more surprises left for this trade period sounded pretty friggin ominous. I burst out laughing after he said it.

Geewiz this is good fun.

Port have to watch a slow car crash in Butters playing out his final year and 100% leaving at the end of next year...

Cop that dickheads

I rate Butters as a top 3 player

Enjoy dealing with Dogs fans for the next 12 months

i'd trade for him now

Hope the SDK for Marshall rumour is true!

Looked like he was going to be anything a few years ago SDK, probably has dropped off a bit. Rather him than a pick in the late teens or earlier 20s.

If we end up with SDK we have plenty of tall back depth for once. SDK, Aleer, Silvagni, Wilkie, Howard, Caminiti & Tauru can all play that position if needed.

I’d love to see Tauru play forward, I think Caminiti probably heads back forward also? Love trade week, I assume we won’t actually get SDK, but exciting!

What are we wanting for Marshall? F1?

I don't imagine we are chasing a pick for Marshall.

It will be a player, or players, but technically it's the pick with Geelong in a 3 way.

An example would be Cam McKenzie.

In McKenzie
Out Marshall
and whatever pick it takes goes around us.

McKenzie has played some bloody good football in his AFL career. I reckon if he were on wed have him along side some of our best kids coming through.

He was looking very good early this year until the broken hand.

I’m not trying to be rude but you can’t have seen much of him.

I’ll give him 1 very good game against Geelong, a few where he was ok and quite a few where he was just not afl standard. It remains a mystery why we want him and how we intend to use him.

All I can say is Lyon has a history of finding players who seem out if their depth but become important role players under him, let’s hope Aleer is the next one.
I'm not trying to be rude but you probably aren't the best judge of talent either so find your dismissal of Armoooo's opinion amusing.

Armoooo's opinion is in line with much more reputable thinkers than yourself, chief.

Adam Kingsley chose to select Aleer for every game in GWS' race for finals - except Round 20 where he was rested and then brought straight back in.

And also the recruiting team at the Saints clearly rate Aleer as an addition to the list - SOS, Gubby and Ross.

Fair enough to have a different opinion but your outright dismissal is actually comical.

As for what I think about Aleer...he has some elite athletic and physical traits. Has only played 25 games of AFL football. For what we are getting him for....a likely F3 and a modest salary - there is plenty to work with.

The Saints clearly see Aleer as a versatile defender who can play both tall and small. He definitely has a fair bit of work to go in terms of being an elite defender but he is only a baby in terms of experience.
