You can’t be serious. Baltas best is A grade and AA squad calibre. He can also take a run in the ruck or forward if needed. Young’s best is not near that level and he has shown no signs of being capable of playing other positions in a pinch.
33 would be about the right pick.

The club obviously agrees that Young isn’t A grade or they’d be hanging onto him with a better offer. We aren’t short of cash.

Balta is erratic but sometimes brilliant, Young did not put a foot wrong this year and very steady. Both very good stoppers, Young maybe in front on that category. Balta more attacking. Young a better kick. Balta a better mark, but not by much given Young's last 6 games.

35 games is not much to bet on, so Young could go either but you can't see him going backwards too much. Balta should settle at CHB and improve this year, not much in it.

Comparing the low ebb of one with the highest point of the other. Not a fair comparison in my opinion. If Balta was on the market we would be getting much higher offers than the mid 30s pick being discussed for Young.

I get that and that is why I said at present. Balta has a higher upside for sure but he has been a bit inconsistent last few years mainly due to us being crap and having to ruck. But there is also a good chance that Young will improve again next season given he came of a knee reco. The gap might close a bit.

You are dreaming. It’s like you forget in 2010-12 we had some highly rated defenders like Thurstfield, McGuane, Schultz floating around. A Graders. Our list is full of holes and a 27 year old who has had a handful of good games is a) not in our next flag team and b) not an A grader.

He's expected starting back 6 for Weagles.

The fact we have depth shouldnt mean we give away starting calibre players for free.
